Ever buy the same game for multiple consoles and why?

Does anybody here ever buy the same game for more than one console, either right away or eventually? I'm just curious about people's motivations. I'm sitting here looking at a copy of NBA Street Vol. 2 for Xbox when I haven't even unlocked any of the old-school players in the GameCube version yet. I got it when it was cheap during the KB sale, and I will probably crack it eventually, but there's really no rush.

Anyway, do you do it to make your collection numbers larger? Is it convenience? Is it botched frame-rates between two different versions? Extra features? Reduced cost? Portability, in the case of the GBA/SNES conversions?

Of course, we should open this discussion up for all systems, not just next-gens. For example, what's the purpose of owning the same game on SNES and Genesis?

I have Dragon Spirit for the TG-16 and NES. The levels are similar but slightly different, not enough to rave about it. It's all about the music for me though. I just like each version's tunes for varying reasons, sort of like a precursor to appreciating remixes in the video game scene today.

For older systems, I'm slowly working on complete collections, so I do buy copies of the exact same game for different systems.

For newer systems, it's too expensive to do that, so I read reviews, and then pick the version with the best control, or the best graphics (meaning extreme games go to my PS2, Classic style games go to my Cube, and everything else goes to my XBox...)

And if you ever want to get rid of that NBA Street Vol 2 for cheap, let me know. My KB never dropped it below $40 :(

I've got multiple copies of both Gradius and Gradius II. There are differences here and there, depending on the version (the PCE CD Gradius II has an extra stage and animated intro that the rest don't for instance).

I have some double snes/genesis games. I play them both and usually beat both...don't know why though.

Well, I like to compare games on different consoles to see the strengths/weaknesses of each particular platform... it's a lot easier with the older consoles, as games tended to be rehashed more.

For some reason, a thrift I went to over the holidays was charging $5 for a loose Popeye NES when all the other games including SNES and Genesis were $2. Strange...

SNES and Genesis are just to add to the collection....getting further and further to a "complete" system collection.

As for Next Gen...if its cheap enough, its MINE! But to buy a double it has to be CHEAP cheap....for example, I have Aggresive Inline for PS2, which I paid 30.00 for a long time back...EXCELLENT game! THen I seen the Xbox version at the flea market for 2.50, I bought it, and kept it. Would I have paid 5.00? no.

Sometimes when I get a new console, I'll buy a game that I know I like on another console, just so I know I'll have a game I like, plus I can contrast/compare the graphics/sound of said system.

I bought Need for Speed Hot Persuit for XBox and realized that it isn't as good as the PS2 version which was coded by another group. I then bought the PS2 version.

If I like a game good enough, I buy all the versions, like Beamrider, Worms (and all its incarnations), Archon, et.al. It's so I can play them, no matter what system i have hooked up.

Yeah, I'm on a similar quest with Joust; seeking it for every pre-NES console possible. I'm not even all that good at Joust but it's a good 2-player classic game handy to have around as one never knows when you can get someone to sit down and play the old stuff with you sometime.
