I know, its an eBay auction, but I feel its more suitable here becuase its not about the auction itseld, but the magazine itself
Anyone have any idea about this "classic gaming magazine and price guide"? Id sure like to know :eek 2: [/url]

It's hard to "have an idea" when the magazine hasn't launched yet. I've got my subscription though. There's no such thing as "too much information".

BTW, you can subscribe through mancigames.com (http://www.mancigames.com). They won't bill you until AFTER the first issue is sent out. I'd personally STAY AWAY from the Ebay auction because you'll end up being charged for that right away - even BEFORE the mag launches. Why in the world would anyone want to go for that?

Any idea what company is publishing this? I particularly don't want to plop down 25.00 for a magazine subscription that isn't backed by a well known source....
I DID just pay 25.00 for the DP guide, CANT WAIT! :D

Monthly Price Guide
The Becket guide brought alot of profit seekers into the baseball card market and if this magazine makes it it could be the beginning of the end for collecting as we know it.

You got a point, I find a lot of interest in my hobby, and even more so because its MY hobby....no one else around here does it. Now if it becomes big like baseball cards then I believe that were going to have more collectors and more profit seekers thus hindering or ruining our hobby.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. We've been doing this for twelve years... and two years of 'tipping off' collectors in Tips & Tricks. It's not the end of thw world as you know it. It's just the natural progression of a growing hobby. Use it as a tool, not an omen.

Can we take that double post as an omen? :D Hell, it happens to everything that gets hot. I just hope they don't start charging $5 for a $1 game! Oh wait... they already do.

Two things:
1. First, they say that they're the first retrogames price guide. I think we all know that there are many, many others - including the DP Guide - that were here much earlier. Someone may want to set them straight on that assinine claim.
2. Secondly, "MANCI" is the name for the local Mansfield (Ohio) Correctional Institute - the high-security prison in Ohio. See?

Mike Thomasson called me last week. This magazine contacted him and asked him if he wanted to write for them. He asked me if I wanted to be involved (along with several other writers from Chris Cavanaugh's Classic Gamer Magazine.) I told him to have them email. Needless to say, they haven't contacted me.

I love the idea of a classis video game magazine, but I have my doubts about this lasting. Chris C. put out a great product and it had trouble and I don't see this topping that effort. Most (almost 90%) of new start magazines fail within three years. I think the subscriber base is overestimated and advertisers will be very tough to find. I don't see videogame companies wanting to advertise in a magazine for collectors of old videogames and without advertising you have a tough go without charging really high prices per issue. Also, how reliable is a monthy or even four times a year price-guide? Most retro-collectors are flea-market and thrift finders and look for stuff cheap. The DP has it pretty well covered as a price-guide. I may be very very wrong. How well did the Video Game Bible sell? I have it and like it, but did it do well enough to warrant further publications? I can see products from a communuty like DP or AtartiAge doing well (not going to strike it rich though), but to first advertise on Ebay and not promote first here and at AtariAge and/or the NES sites? I will definitely buy the first issue, but I won't sink money into a year subscription.
Thoughts . . .

Leonard --
Keep us posted on the magazine plans. I posted some doubts about its viability, but I sure woud love a high-quality classic gaming magazine. I've enjoyed reading Phoenix and your writing in CGM.
Best of luck --

Monthly price guide? They might as well jam an icepick into their skulls and call it a day. And how are they going to judge it? Where are they getting their game lists? Questions and more questions.
I just hope they don't rip off DP or AA. I'd like to know more about the people doing this jobbie.

I don't know if anyone has seen this yet but there's another new videogame magazine out called Polygon Magazine. The latest issue (#7) is available at Barnes & Noble and their website is: http://www.polygonmag.com/index.php
First, they say that they're the first retrogames price guide.
Actually they say they are the first retrogames price guide AND magazine...
Oh wait, DP has that too!

Oh wait, DP has that too!Wellllll, DP is more of a newsletter/fanzine, so I'll give them a pass on that. But first retro-price guide? Ahem. DP Guide. Videogame Bible. Jerry G list. Etc. They're REALLY overstappeing with that claim, IMHO.

I picked up the newest issue of Polygon when I saw it at B&N and it's pretty good. There's not a whole lot of substance to it yet (developing magazines must take a while to generate content), but I hope it sticks around so I can see where it is a year from now. The paper stock is REALLY nice...similar to GamesTM. It's billed as an adult mag, meaning you won't see a lot of crude/stupid jokes a la EGM. Worth the fiver to check it out.
I have the special E3 issue of Polygon from last year and have read a couple additional issues. I'm not impressed. I am not impressed by any of the websites they are affiliated with either. Polygon used to be xengamers.com I believe. The only good thing about the Polygon people is that they get some good news on their website. Everything else is average at very best. Polygon magazine is like a watered down Next Generation or Game Informer which isn't a compliment in the slightest. I think the biggest problem is that they are tyring to appeal to adults. They seem to try too hard to be "adult like." Their opinions are boring and old and aren't really insightful. Their articles are not well written. Can you tell i'm not thrilled with this mag or what? Their first cover story is about Videogames and the mainstream. I don't know if people realize but videogames have always (ok not always but for a while) been in the mainstream in some form or another. It's just more apparent now. For at least 20 years videogames have infected all sorts of different mediums. Enough with the history lesson. Don't buy Polygon. If you really want a more mature Mag check out the Dave Halverson led magazine PLAY. It isn't perfect but it is the best option right now at least until the 2nd coming of GAMEFAN! Last thing, hey Leonard, can I interview you for my TV show? I will contact you soon enough to see if you're down!

This is very weird. Something I just posted is now gone. My name is still listed as the last poster (as of this writing). Did the mods delete it (why they would I don't know) or is it some kind of board glitch?
EDIT: Now it's back. Go figure. :D
SECOND EDIT: I just changed above post on my own. I wanted to delete it to begin with. Is it just me or is the board acting weird tonight. I see a links bar (MINUS links) in the middle of the screen now.

I spoke with Jaysen Mercer last night on the phone, one of five partners starting the magazine and the editor in chief. I was impressed with his professionalism and understanding of classic video games. We talked for over half an hour and I mentioned quite a few things that only a classic gamer would know about. As far as I could tell, he knew what he was talking about. We discussed Packrat's homebrew lineup and the possibility of a monthly column on our homebrews. Frankly, I'm excited.
We didn't discuss any sort of a timeline, but I got the impression that they've been working on this for quite a while. We also talked about the price guide and how the prices will be determined. As it stands now, they will monitor online retailer prices via monthly surveys, take into account ebay prices, and consult a few other sources. Interestingly, they're planning to only list the top 25% of games (regarding selling price) for each system.
As for writers, the sample on their website with the David Crane interview was written by Jaysen. I noticed on the GDG website that Michael Thomasson will have his own monthly column. It will be interesting to see how it fleshes out. I really hope that they will stay true to the real fans of classic gaming.
Sincerely,
Jarett Waite

Top 25%....hmmmm Interesting. Is that the top 25% in sales, or highest price, or what?

I did contact them about the magazine and too see if they are interested
in coming to VGS'04 (he said they are interested and I just have to wait for thier reply back)
