I'm talking overall, but you can break it down to games, graphics or any other intangibles. Let your opinions of the 8 bit competitors begin..... @_@

System:Master System
Controller:NES
Graphics:Master System
Sound:NES
Games:NES (Even if you count foreign Master System games)
Durability:Master System

I finished my Master System American collection, but it's a whole new ballgame when you collect the foreign games. Star Wars is cool!!!

Wow! Nice breakdown! You have them pegged as dead even, according to your 6 way breakdown--3 a piece. Who would win your overall?

Oops!! Nevermind, you listed SMS as the best system, and for the record, I couldn't agree more!

I enjoy the Sega Master System way more then the NES. But, the NES has all of the big name games.

Final Answer:Sega Master System

SMS had the better system, but NES had better games. We've seen this happen with other systems through the last 25 years as well.

And I think the SMS had some nice music -- it just did'nt get USED as much as the NES sound chip did. What they did with that sound chip was pretty amazing.

Say it:

FAN BOY

I have nothing against the sms as I enjoy playing mine, but let's see Nes has like 10-1 ratio better games. I mean, damn, you have Final Fantasy, Metroid, Zelda, Super Mario series, Contra, and the list goes way on and on. Games make the system, not the graphics, controller, etc..

Well all I had was a NES while growing up and I loved it.

I now have a SMS also and I like it's games more than the average Nes games now.

So I guess it's a 50/50 split. 8-)

Well NES had the better games, but the SMS had much better graphics.

But im not much for graphics im all about gameplay, so NES wins!

OH MY GOD

I get the feeling I've been here before.. only there were more midgets with electric egg beaters last time.. technicolor, yes, that's the ticket.

Anyway, back to the hard hitting question.

Sometimes on Sundays the Master System comes to visit and on those days I bake apple pies, left to cool on the window sill their wafting aroma tends to attract vermin of the sacriligious variety. It's times like those that I appreciate the Sega's company because it typically pulls through in the preservation of said pastries.

BUT. But the rest of the week. Guess who's there? Sitting in my lap purring like the proverbial monochrome kitten with eddies of rippling color seeping from the clefts of its ears? YES.

Ed McMahon. I don't know who that other guy is.

The other guy is your girlfriend's daddy.

Anyway.

Yes, looking back it seems like the SMS had better graphics, but during it's reign I don't know a SINGLE PERSON who had one. There were at least ten kids in my neighborhood who had NES systems, but I never heard of the SMS until much later. So it's a little tough comparing the two, looking at one with fresh glasses that the other with rose-tinted retro ones.

It was me!
I had one! EVERYONE else had NES's. I couldn't rent games to save my life, but the rental shops were stacked with NES games. then SMB3 came out, and I realized my system didn't have the best games. Wonder Boy III came out, and it was a contender of a platformer, but too little too late.

Al that said, it still the superior SYSTEM!! :P

just not the SUPERIOR library

It was me too!! All my friends had the NES, so I had to get a SMS to be different. I remember standing there in Target trying to decide which system to get juggling between SMS and NES--SMS came with the Hang On/ Astro Warrior combo game, so I went with it!! The rest is history. My friends and I had the never ending which is better arguement!!

It's the fight that will never die..

NES is today's PS/2, the SMS is today's XBOX. Back in the day, I had an NES. Today I have an XBOX.

Sure the SMS had better graphics, but the NES had all the titles, and for that reason it's a better collectors machine if you want to feel like you're back in the 80's..

If all you care about is graphics.. then by all means.. get an XBOX! :D

The SMS had better hardware (graphics), but nintendo had the developers!! That reminds me of the present situation in the market: xbox is more powerful, but ps2 has way more developers...that makes me think that the ps2 wont be toppled ever...until the next generation of consoles

Ok--so it's been discussed before--I didn't know that. Maybe some members around here haven't been involved with the previous threads about the subject--so think of this thread as a refresher thread of sorts! And if it upsets certain members that it is being discussed agiain, they can just skip over the thread and ignore it, and let the people who want to add their two cents do so. :hmm:

Yeah, it is true. The similarities are surely there. I guess I always kinda pull for the underdogs.....

I think that the SMS had by far better graphics and sound. (Objects actually look like what they are supposed to be in the game as opposed to blocky images presented in some of the NES games and I know someone who often hums the theme to Alex The Kid In Miracle World.) Yet it seems like most of the games never utilize this and, in fact, most of the games for the sega master system don't seem to utilize the fact of being games. (With of course exceptions like the Wonderboy Series and some of the Alex The Kid titles.) The NES simply had better games, and there were more, and this seems to be what makes the NES better. YET I find that some of the games for SMS are even more enjoyable than those for the NES.I of course owned an NES as a kid and did not even hear of the Sega Master System until about three years ago. Though, I always attribute this not to the fact that SMS was inferior in many ways (I think it could be considered equal in many ways to NES) but that SMS marketed far better in Europe than the US.

Raccoonlad, there is no nes fanboy as devoted to their system as you are to your beloved sms. You are like the official board spokesman for the system, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

HOWEVER, the games always have, and always will, determine a systems true greatness. On "paper", yes the sms wins hands down (except for audio). But due to lack of third-party support, the sms game library loses to the nes in terms of both quantity AND quality. And it's not close, it's a blow-out.

That being said, the sms is a MUST-own system for any and every 8-bit gamer. It has many excellent games, and I have enjoyed rediscovering the "forbidden friut" of the 80's gaming scene.

but seriously I perfer the NES because i had it back when I was growing up. I did not even know what a Sega Master System was until I joined Retrogaming Roundtable.

BTW Today I have a PS/2

I don't think anyone is upset....? We just encourage people to continue threads that have been done before in the original thread, so later, when someone else wants to talk about the subject again, it's all in once place and easier to find.
