NES Toaster Casing Question

Hi, I have noticed something odd about the NES Toaster-style systems. I always thought that the top part of the system's plastic casing had a rough texture. I have recently seen NES systems with smooth textures, but I don't know if it's because of weathering, or if they were different versions. Does anyone have any info regarding this?

There are two different versions: smooth and slightly rough. I don't know if it was factory variations or timing or what, but I can tell you that of the 8 toasters I currently have, the 3 highest serial numbers are smooth. Maybe later era ones are smooth???
