I'm selling a copy of MechAssault (from the XBox Live package) on eBay. Got the following email:
Sorry for the strange question, but on the game disk could you tell me the xbox part number#. It will be in white letters around the edge. The number should start with an x08, x09, x10. Thanks.
Why do they want to know this?... (BTW, I haven't answered them).

I asked a friend and he's not aware of any hacks using this. Maybe the guy wants to call tech support, is running a pirated copy, and needs a valid serial number to give them? Wacky scenario, but just a guess.

I have another idea:
He's just looking for an original version of the game.
It was since re-released as a free pack-in with the live startup kit,
and the xbox quest pack (with KOTOR).
And subsequently, the two later versions are the "not for resale" versions.
But, then again, he might be out to pirate something.
I'm not into that, so I don't really know.

Well my guess is he is trying to use the dashboard hack that is avail on 007 and MEch, and maybe it only works withe certain versions of Mechassault. Just a thought.

If that's correct -- that he's looking for a original copy -- just letting him know PART of the number and confirming that it's a original copy should be enough to answer the question, while not giving enough to allow him to pirate it.
