Can I use Atari 2600 Controllers on my C64?

Absolutely, that's what was intended. There are also lots of Atari-type clone joysticks (Kraft, Wico, and Epyx all made some) that were very popular at the time.

There is also a C64 mouse that will plug into the joystick port, but it was rarely used (I had a C64 for almost 10 years and never had one). It was used mainly for GEOS (a gui OS that ran off of floppy, for those into torture ...)

Also note that the C64 has 2 joystick ports. Some games use port 1, some use port 2. It's almost random. If you start a game up and the joystick doesn't seem to be working, swap ports.

Most games use port 2 btw. Due to Commodore's penny pinching design at the time, some of the input from port 1 crosses the keyboard lines and you do some input with a stick in there. Plug a stick in port 1, turn the machine on and wiggle the stick about and you'll see some characters appear.

Port 1 fire button = space bar, so if you have a game that requires space bar usage, you can do what I do and plug an extra stick into port 1, and press the fire button with my toes LOL

Only warning I'll make is NEVER plug or unplug a stick whilst the power is on the C64... it can and will eventually damage one of the important I/O chips.

Yes, here there are a lot of joysticks like L-com, Dynacom, etc. that allows you to play C-64, Atari and compatibles...

anyone know where to find replacement joystick terminatiors for some of the old games that used them to prevent piracy?

The best bet is to check out commie lots on ebay and fleas.
I don't think I've ever seen one sell just by itself.

To be truthful, it'd most likely be easier to just find a cracked version. I don't see many dongles in the wild, lots or otherwise. They're easy to lose ;P

What game dongle in particular are you looking for? I agree with the other post, you're much more likely to find a cracked copy than a dongle. I remember Leaderboard Golf used one, I can't remember what other games took one. Seems like one of the database programs did too.

Don't use a Genesis Pad with a C64.
