For those of you who are just getting started collecting, let me offer some advice. Let EVERYONE YOU KNOW know that you are collecting! You never know where that next great tip will come from: a friend, a neighbor, or even your grandmother!

Earlier today I got an E-Mail from a friend that said, "Don't know if you saw this in the paper or not, but there's a Karate Champ machine for $175."

:eek 2:

I called the number in the ad the minute I read the e-mail. He still has the machine. In fact, he has a couple other machines, including Rastan, and Ninja Kids, also for $175. (Does a little Snoopy dance)

Of course, the only wrench in the whole plan is that I need my Rodeo to go pick it up, which of course as you may have seen in my other thread, is in the shop having the rear window replaced.

Hopefully, by this time tomorrow, I'll have a few more additions to the collection.

Nice find. Something like that was in my newspaper last week, but he was asking 400 bucks.

Rastan! As stated, cheesy but nice! :D

Your game room is already pretty darn nice...any more cabs in there and you'll be ready to open a real arcade (except you wouldn't want to, of course).

Hey!

I loved Rastan.. I remember playing it in Miami Beach a lot as kid when my family went there on vacation one year!

I was never a big Rastan fan, but I can still hear the weird music and sound effects in my head. It seems like every arcade I went to back in the day had this game, so playing it was unavoidable.

Thanks for the compliment, Ed. I've been going through and setting them all to free play ... it's amazing the information that's available out there on the web.

Very sound advice. If there were 10 commandments of collecting, I'd put this up there.

Oh, and good luck with the other machines.

See, I'd advise the opposite. In my experience, for every find it gets you, it gets you 15 requests from people who want to come and play with your stuff. Most of them won't respect it, they sure as hell won't appreciate it, and some of them will even make fun of you while using it. I actually wish less people knew about my collection.

That hasn't been my experience at all. My last good "hook-up" came from an old family friend, who happened to also be my realitor. She happened to show a house of some people who had some video games in their garage. She asked about them and found out the people wanted to sell them really cheap, as they didn't want to move them.

I try to limit the amount of people over to my house who come just to make fun of me.

Soooo...Rastan's my housewarming present, right? LOL

Just kiddin'...I'm not sure I've ever played it!

chadtower: Hmm... That's interesting. It's good to put things into different perspectives; I never thought of it that way.

On the other hand, saying no to punk-ass moochers should never be difficult. That would defy principle.

It all depends on who the moochers are. Sometimes they're people you know and you can tell them to screw off. Sometimes they are relatives or inlaws, and that is a different story.

Either way, this is a nice score. Arcade cabs rule.

Welp, it appears I spoke too soon. I didn't get my Rodeo back until Thursday, and it rained Friday and Saturday. This morning it's clear, so I called the guy up. He ended up selling them to someone else. Suck.

All that's in the paper this week is a Robotron for $300.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about that. I wonder if any of these same types would steal stuff from you in an instant, too...In any case, when I tell people about my game stuff, it's generally that I have it, and people who like to talk about VG stuff and are into games will say one thing, and people who don't like to talk about VG stuff won't. I've gotten a few ribs about "this guy spends all his money on video games!" but it's certainly not meant to be bad...some people (myself included) find it hard to believe that I can afford as much stuff off my little job as I do. It's not as if I get terribly good deals on things, either :P

No. I am sure that none of those people would steal from me. They may not treat the items with the type of kid gloves one of us would, and may not take them seriously, but none of the folks I've mentioned would steal. There's a line between being jerky and being a theif and I don't believe anyone that would be in my house crosses that line.

Wow!

Again, we live in two very different worlds, Mr. Tower.

The community in my local area has grown and it's been very good for all of us now that we've "found" each other. I'm also fortunate enough to say that I've never had anyone make fun of me while using my stuff. Damn! That's pretty fucked up to even imagine. Do you just smash their faces in? I wonder what I'd do, and wonder what kind of person would beinterested in my collection and then make fun of me for it! That kind of person would get beaten.

As such I'd go along with Flack - say it loud, say it proud. Collecting communities wouldn't exist if we all hid away underground.

I was mostly speaking of noncollectors. Everyone I have met from DP have been excellent folks, and I've met quite a few at this point. Those among the collecting community are as you say. They are good people. There have been people who have come to my house, noncollectors, friends of my wife or members of her family, who have seen my collection and made fun of it. Some people just do that with anything they either don't understand or don't feel the same way the collector does. I guess my feelings could be articulated more clearly by saying I try to limit the amount of noncollectors who know the extent of my collection.

Everytime I tell someone I'm collecting arcade games they say, "oh thank God, at least you finally quit buying Star War stuff," and then I tell them that I still collect that too and then they roll their eyes.

About a year ago I ran into one of my friends' mother at the grocery store. She asked me what I had been up to and I ended up telling her about the arcade that my wife built and I was filling up. She said that her son had a bunch of old Atari stuff and that he was supposed to come get them and never did, so if I wanted them I could have them for free. Score. It ended up being a 2600 with a bunch of 2600 and 5200 games, as well as a Stunt Cycle unit.

Like I said, I've had friends, family, and even my realtor hook me up with some great connections.

Anyway, dead horse.

"Classic Williams Robotron upright. Works well. needs some exterior care. $300"

These are going for a mint now, so I'm guessing that it's in pretty bad shape. I might go look at it tomorrow since I'm off.
