I'm looking for a good, free site to read game reviews on. PS2 is what I'm looking for at the moment, but it would be nice to have one that reviewed older games too. Somebody at another forum I read has posted a huge list (http://pub146.ezboard.com/fthesafehouseoutsidenorrath.showMessage?topicID=14 792.topic) of cheap Circuit City ganes, and I want to know which ones are worth picking up.

For newer games, Metacritic is helpful, because it can lead you to all sorts of other reviews. It's a good start.

www.gamerankings.com isn't a bad place to start, mostly for newer stuff though. The reviews here are pretty good as well, I've wated away a few hours reading the reviews here at DP.

Reviews written by actual gamers. Not always the most coherent or unbiased, but I've gotten some good info from them. Plus, I used to write quite a bit there. :)

Out of curiosity, which gaming websites run reviews that AREN'T written by actual gamers?
-- Z.
Check out www.gamecritics.com, apparently they become testy when someone mentions that they aren't reviewing films, and they can't touch Roger Ebert's writing, though they try so very hard to emulate his style. Some of the site's pretentious editorials are quite hysterical, though they obviously don't intend to be. Sometimes, when I need a good laugh, gamecritics hits the spot more often than Penny Arcade or The Onion.

Just 'cause they're pompous a-holes doesn't mean they're not "actual gamers." I've encountered more than a few game journalists who are incredibly unpleasant and extremely knowledgable.

Actual gamers wouldn't bitch that GTA: Vice City isn't the second coming of Apocalypse Now. Of course, they've hidden most of their reviews behind a registration firewall, and I suddenly don't feel the urge to cut and paste their lame critiques. Anyway, from the people I've worked with, the rudest and most dishonest editors are usually the least knowledgeable and use their rudeness to hide their lack of knowledge and understanding, but that's just my opinion.

Why would you claim that professional game journalists, such as the crew at GameSpot, aren't actual gamers?

I didnt, its a response to the first post.

Interesting...although, wasn't it Gamestop that got in troub..well...they actually got caught red-fucking-handed not playing a game for a substantial enough time to review it properly. I don't remember th exact details, but the game was Savage, and the developers kept an eye on how long the reviewer played it and it was somewhere in the 4 hour vicinity I believe. They're usually decent, it's just funny to see the big guys get their balls busted...kind of like what's happening to EGM right now with the Russian soldier picture they photoshopped.

Can someone point me to a few of their Ebertesque reviews? As a big fan of Ebert's work, I really don't see any similarities. Granted, I've only read a couple so far (yes, I actually signed up - curiosity got the better of me), so Mr. Ebert's ghost may very well rare its ugly head as I continue to read. :)

Although I hate them, I usually check ps2.ign.com first. While I usually don't agree with them 100%, I can usually get the general overview of a game from there.

As much as I know that it has some bad reviews, I still like GameFAQ's a lot. I've posted reviews there, so not all are bad. ;) And they have both reader's reviews -- gamers -- and links to professional reviews of the game.

I wasn't insinuating that each game needs to be completed or even played for an ungodly amount of time before review. I do feel, however, that if the game has an online aspect, you should at least play that for a good while. I remember playing UT back on the DC and I sucked at it when I first got it. Hell, I sucked for the first month. Had I given my opinion during this time, I would have most certainly not given it as high as review score since it hadn't had time to properly grow on me. I'm not taking up for the game or the publisher, I don't give two shits in a biscuit about either, I just think online games might require a bit more playtime [than a couple of hours] before a proper review, that's all. Then again, I don't get paid to write reviews so my input might not be all that valid.

Sorry, I worded that one wrong. :embarrassed:
I should have said average gamers. The consumers, those who aren't paid to write them. Or, using your description, not a "Professional game journalist."
I'm not trying to knock anyone here! :)

If you want good reviews DO NOT look to Game Informer magazine. I think they either copy EGM's review for hardcore games or they give high reviews to games that Gamestop is really trying to sell.

I didn't say, and I'm certainly not implying, that your input isn't valid because you're not a professional game journalist
I didn't take it that way at all. I was simply stating that without having any experience getting paid for reviews and having to hear from developers after one of their games has been reviewed, my opinion might not be the best to take into consideration. It's hard to give advice on a subject in which you have no experience, that's all :D.
