I love how some of em aren't even alphabetized. You will note that companies like Id, Ion Storm, Looking Glass Studios and such are conspicuously absent. Does this mean no Doom or Deus Ex or System Shock 2 are incompatible with the Phantom? Or perhaps that they'd sue Infinium for trying to associate them... :D

Either way, NONE of the games I'd even consider playing on a system like that are listed. Not one. And I've never heard of 75% or more of those games! That's saying a lot since I've been PC gaming since the 286 days......

Alpha 2???? LOL

Man, they can't even get recent stuff...Not that i'd argue about a new version of Puzzle Fighter 2...

This system will have the same fate of the Topwave Zodiac:

It looks neato but half of the consumer base will skip right over it and the other half of them wont know that the thing ever existed in the first place.

I'm formulatiing a nice post for the official Phantom forums, that I'll post to this forum when I finish it, but a 500+ game library of old ass PC games does not a new system make.

...especially when they promised 30,000 of them.

Man, Capcom must be really cheap with some of their franchises or they like going out on a limb. Megaman X5 was slated for a release on the GP32 some time back. Did that ever come out?

Hmm. Interesting. I'm debating buying this, an N-Gage, a 32x, a Zodiac, or a PSX (the new one).

Actually, there were official PC conversions of several of the Megaman X games. (They're in the database at Underdogs, but I don't think they're downloadable there.) Come to think of it, there were PC versions of SF Alpha 2 and Puzzle Fighter, too. It would thus be a simple matter to release those games for the Phantom.

Anyone else notice that the list is also inflated by the likes of Mavis Beacon and Reader Rabbit?

There is no list on that page.

Anyways, I took a look at the specs of the machine, and it is almost identical to my computer. Why would I want that thing when I have a perfectly good computer that will perform just as good?

Ha!

They've removed it.. I was expecting something like this.

This or the PSX, if you ask me.

The only problem is that I just CAN'T get that picture of the kid playing a Phantom in front of a television with a TON of nasty, nasty fingerprints ALL OVER it. ARGH

Anyhow, the draw of the Phantom is supposed to be that you basically get a PC with a cable internet connection, and can play against PC opponents (at least that's what I'm assuming it can do, shame on them if it can't) as well as Phantom opponents. Sort of a cheap alternative to getting a real PC. Not a bad idea at all, but we'll have to see if the idea is executed and subsequently recieved well.

Whatever happened to the rumors about this system being able to play PS2, Gamecube, and XBox games?

Do they plan on supporting older games too? It would be interesting if you could get old games like Doom or Duke Nukem 3D for cheap.

Rumors? Who would believe that? Those rumors died out about the time the Romans were salting the fields of Carthage...Not even the Phantom folks are that dumb...and they've been dumb enough to let a bunch of (mostly) idiotic tools (with at least one exception) who are already talking about setting up Phantom sites serve as their main liason to the gaming public.

Have to admit the Phantom concept is cool, and the name/logo combination could be absolutely kickass if they went to a more rounded, realistic looking character (my opinion), but the execution won't be that great.

I'm with Dahne on this. I think the whole appeal when I first started reading on the Phantom was way back when they were saying it would be able to play next gen games. Now that it's playing old PC stuff that I have on another console or don't really care for...I'm jumping ship on the "hey, this is kind of a cool concept" I figured for a fee, I'd be able to download [insert name of game that comes on all consoles in '2006'] at 3 AM. Sure, I might not have anything physical to show for the purchase of a game, but the convenience that I can get the game I want, whenever I want was a +.

Yeah, I have X3 and X4 for the PC, scarce little things, those two. What I meant though (and I wish there was a nicer way to put it) is that Capcom is a platform slut. You can get legal arcade rom packs of Capcom oldies with certain PC arcade joystick setups, that sort of thing. They have an unusual tendency to sell off their old library (for what must be cheap, affordable) unlike other companies.

I just can''t believe that this thing is still coming. I seriously thought this was a joke.

i wonder if its going to top the N-Gage for fastest sink in the market.

By the way, is the Zodiac out? I haven't heard of anyone carrying it.

I believe it was released in October, slightly after the N Gage was. I only saw magazine ads for the month of October, possibly September advertising that it was an online only deal and as of right now, no retailers will be carrying it.

Online only huh, that doesn't sound like a good way to get buisness from what Tapwave calls the "Game Boy Graduates".

My photographer completely ruined this shot. You can't even tell I'm giving the dinosaur* a dirty look.

Anywho. Portnoyd and I have been doing some journalistic digging, and we managed to get a list of the seven "exclusive" titles that will be released.

Out of the seven, four of them are racing games. One of these four is a recycled NUON game.

Of the other three, one is a card game, the other two I can't find info on, though I'm told one of them is "Halo-like."

Joy.

Well, if they're recycling NUON games, maybe they'll get Tempest 3000 as well. (That was never released elsewhere, was it?)

I remember seeing screenshots, which some said were just mockups of the system, of some sort of FPS running.

Currently, the Phantom.net site is back up, and you'll notice Reader Rabbit and other quite engaging titles in the upper right hand corner of the page.

The more things change about the Phantom, the more they stay the same.
