I'm not "against" it, but it does seem 'pointless' to me. When it comes to ease of use, consoles own. When it come to interconnectivity, PC's own, and have owned for the last 15 years.

I've seen so many console 'online' gimmicks try and fail due to lack of support (had a buddy with IntelliVision cable service), that I no longer have any faith in the concept. You want to play online for years? Get a computer. I can still play Quake 1 anytime I want online, on a modern PC. That's support.

It's too bad, I'd like to see something persistent with consoles, but as long as they make the networks closed and proprietary, and not "open" like the internet, they will go obsolete with the games, if not sooner.

Some 20 year old PC games can still be played online, and are. I 'wish' I could get cable Intellivision.

I'm not totally agenst it.. Only for games where typing is a nessesity. Sports, FPS, driving, and to a sertain extent fighting games (you have to have a ping around 100 or less for these to work right) are all great online ideas for consoles.. Being able to play Madden online or a game of NFS would be great!

The only problems I see are with the games that are made for a monthly charge.. Everquest-ps2, Star Wars Galaxies, FF-XI.. the games that take you 1 year of Leveling to actually be able to play the game. If it needs a keyboard it is best left to the computer..

I am 100% for playing console games online.

I already play the Quake 2 ports for xbox online vs PC players.

It is a BLAST. Sure I can't curse back at 'em cause I have no KB, but that doesnt matter.

I used to play DC games online too. Daytona USA was one of the best online games I've played. (had the most fun anyway)

Multiplayer Vs or Co-op with human players gives many many games that would become old in a month, a much longer play life.

Too bad Medal of Honor won't be on Xbox LIVE, but I bet the next version will ;-)

Why would you be "against" it? Just don't buy it. My guess is that you've never tried it. Console gaming has always had a more relaxed and personal feel than PC gaming and to experience that online is great especially with voice communication.

Well, for starters let me say im not trying to flame or insult anyones opinion in any kind...i respect the fact that you may find certain games enjoyable online, i just wanted to here what everyone else had to think about it...and to answer your question, your right i have never played online games with the exception of the computer..and there are 4 reasons why i wont (buy them at least)

1) It seems that consoles have turned into (with the addition of all this online stuff) in fact, computers. I mean keyboards, mouse...all that crap, not to mention the monthly fees..which is the next part ill get into.
2) Money - For some people its just not worth it to spend money per month to play these games online...nor can some people afford it, however it robs there oporutnity to play quality games like FF11 (which from the info i gathered...is going to be strictly online?)
3) Money part 2 - It seems like the company's that are making these online consoles are just kinda put a half-hearted effort into it just so they can sell you extra junk and not really provide the service needed to run this kind of oporation...but just make loads of bucks off of it
4) How long is this gonna last?...with the way the consoles are coming out like wildfire these days, if i make a $400 invenstment into all this stuff to go online...whos to say 2 years down the line this is still gonna be available online. Perhaps the release of PS3 will just bring a bunch of new online stuff ill have to buy for another $400 and start the vicous cycle over agian.

Anyways, i dont want to start an argument...id just like to hear everyones opinion...and yes, i do see the fun in playing games online, i just refuse to do it because if i wanna bitch about it and play it, that would make me a pretty big hypocrite would it not?:P
And for all you who love this online gaming craze, more power too ya:)

happy gaming

I think PCs are better suited for this as of right now. The equipment is part of the package, the networks are up and running, etc. I think PC games tend to attract the type of gamers who are more interested in playing on-line. Why wait for Sony or MS to get their stuff working, when you can play today on a PC?

I don't play on-line, but I think if I did it'd be PC all the way. Consoles are just different.

I think console online gaming is a great idea. I wasn't able to jump onto the Dreamcast wave of online gaming but I'll probably jump on if and when I get a PS2.

1) It seems that consoles have turned into (with the addition of all this online stuff) in fact, computers. I mean keyboards, mouse...all that crap, not to mention the monthly fees..which is the next part ill get into.

Games are becoming more interactive and require more control. A keyboard is the natural progression of expanded control. A hard drive makes games saves a snap and can give developers more avenues to explore of more interactive games with continuity (ala Morrowind). While the consoles are becoming like computers, they are still a stable platform where the casual gamer doesn't have to know how to tweak TCP/IP or install network drivers to get online. Plus it opens a world of new players to the person, especially if they can't get friends together for a game of Unreal. With all the tech, though, I hope developers won't fall into the realm of releasing patches for hard drive enabled machines.

2) Money - For some people its just not worth it to spend money per month to play these games online...nor can some people afford it, however it robs there oporutnity to play quality games like FF11 (which from the info i gathered...is going to be strictly online?)

Okay, so those people who feel it's not worth it or can't afford it don't play. For everone who doesn't want the online, there is someone who does. If the game is quality, people will pay to play. It works in the PC world, it will work in the console world. Perhaps it will work better because everyone will be on an even platform without worry of someone having a faster or slower machine.

With literally MILLIONS of PS2 hardware owners, it’s safe to say that it will go on for a while. It’s no different for PCs, only the thought of plunking down a little bit of cash here and a little bit of cash there (for modem/network upgrade, video card, RAM, etc.) is easier to swallow than the sticker shock of buying a new console up-front. The support will be there for as long as there is both profit and interest. As for X-Box, it’s pretty much a PC already, so I’m sure any online setup will be so similar to a computer’s that they may possibly be able to integrate both X-Box and PC gaming onto one server.

I think the future of online gaming looks bright. With more games having online options (more so than on the DC) people who prefer console gaming over PC gaming will now be able to participate in games THEY like on a level playing field.

That last bit. I'd change it to "The support will be there for as long as there is profit." And that is it. These "closed' controlled servers are what "irk' me. I can still play Nethack, or DOOM online. The ability to serve is "open", and therefore support will go on as long as there is a desire to play, profit notwithstanding.

Phantasy Star Online? Can any DC owners play this the way it was meant to be played when they bought it? Will they ever be able to again? It's the console catch 22 - closed system- roll of the dice whether you will have support to continue playing in 6 months. I don't see the value. Some consoles fail. Always.

All that said, I hope the PS2 or Xbox or GC makes a successful go of it. I'd be even happier, if after mainstream support waned, they'd open up the server tech, and let anyone who wanted to continue to play with friends on a small scale, play. I fear it will all end up like the classic roms. All this cool stuff, but archaic copyright law makes it too expensive to re-sell, and illegal to give away.Result, old stuff gets ignored.

I play lots of online games on my PC and I have yet to see one that measures up to Phantasy Star Online on the DC. Whether that's because it was my first online jaunt or because it was a great game I don't know but I play a lot of online PC games (fps predominantly) and as good as they are, they're not quite PSO. Quake III on the DC was pretty good fun but that was using a keyboard and mouse.

I won't be bringing any of my consoles online anytime soon. But I'm not against online gaming.

I have a PC and if I wanted to play games online I'd be using that. It just doesn't appeal to me. Too many things can go wrong. Too many people are out there just to cheat. I don't currently have broadband and I'm too cheap to pay for it (I use my wife's ISP, which is paid for by her employer).

I have always and will always enjoy sitting in front of my TV and playing on my own. I'm glad FF XI might not make it to the US. It means I don't have to decide whether to buy it or not.

Im not against it, but i chose to play online games on my pc. I've been playing Delta Force for 2 years and its free via novaworld. I dont see myself spending any money to play online. I pay enough for those games as it is  PS2 that is.

The only thing I dont like about some pc games, are those damn patches. So I give counsel gaming some props  No patches to download :?
