Yes, I know it's early going, but I thought I'd get something started well ahead of time so I can get some input as to when we can all do this. Plus, it also gives everyone time to plan things out if we decide quickly.

The Cedar Point trip was a lot of fun, and I made mention of having another get together, this time at King's Island here in Cincinnati. Possibly, if there's interest, we could have a small get together at my house the day after, if anyone is staying in town.

I do know that the park is sometimes clsoed to the public for private company parties, so once we all settle on a date I can get specific info from the park.

Park admission is $32.99, plus a $9.00 fee to park.

There are plenty of hotels and whatnot near the park, but I live about 15-20 minutes from there, and there is a hotel near me that I'm sure would be much cheaper.

Let me know what you all think!

See park info at www.pki.com

Well, I have no idea when at this early date, but I guarantee you that I will be there this year. :D It sucked organizing DPCP'03, only to get pulled away by a last-minute business meeting.

So, DPKI'04 is a go for me. In fact, I'm already planning a massive photo op in front of - what else? - Tomb Raider: The Ride! Appropriate, yes?

So, let's see some hands at least! (Next year, we'll hit something later in the fall. SpookyWorld perhaps? )

Count me in! Does the park open in May? I like the June date, the earlier the better. I plan on staying in Cincy over the weekend so I would be able to attend an after party.

Um...I'm going to refrain from voting, as I may leave from being a mid-westerner and become and "east coaster" starting in may.

If I happen to be around, June!

I'd be up for going, don't know when for sure though. I've never been there...but I want to take a run at the Beast :D and then go pass out somewhere...

OK, Ohio-and-neighboring states, let's get this resurrected! Summer is fast approaching and it's time to hammer down a date for DPKI'04! If you can make either of the dates in the poll above, start putting in your vote so we can decide a date. I'd like to have something finalized by the end of April so travellers will have a chance to make arrangements.

This year's DP park outing will be to Paramount's Kings Island (http://www.pki.com/) just north of Cincinnati. this year marks the 25th anniversary of The Beast (http://www.pki.com/attractions_rides_featured.jsp?id=710) - the longest, baddest wooden coaster in the world. When it opened in 1979, it broke several world's records and is still a hell of a ride today. Also, KI has Son of Beast (http://www.pki.com/attractions_rides_featured.jsp?id=703) - the world's only LOOPING wooden roller coaster as well as the videogame/movie themed TOMB RAIDER: The Ride! (http://www.pki.com/attractions_rides_featured.jsp?id=224288) What better place for a bunch of videogame fanatics to meet at, eh?

So, let's start taking names and counting heads, folks! DPCP'03 was a success and I'd like to see even more folks turn out for a great, fun day at the park! Who knows: there just may be gifts and prizes for all who can make it!

Start planning now folks, we'll have a date hammered out by month's end!

Maybe we can bump this into the OT or something so we can get more exposure.

I'm all for either date, but I voted for June 26th. I've overcome my fear of rollercoasters thanks to the fine folks that made me get on the 4th tallest coaster in the world (http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery594.htm). :P I hope there are a good number of people coming! If you're looking to stay the night in Cincy, there's a Holiday Inn nearby my abode, which is about 20-25 minutes from the park, and I'm sure it would be cheaper than a hotel near the park.

Just a thought. :)

I vote early June, only because its usually pretty cool and not "OMG smog alert" hot. My unique disease acts up in extreme warm, sunny weather.

Though in all honesty, doesn't matter, since I'm in the area anyways.

Lesson learned. Seeing as how your Triscuit-sized camera took better pics than my bulky Sony model, I think I'll go with a smaller device this year.

OK gang, I believe it's safe to say that we can call the date. Mark your calendars for:

*** JUNE 26, 2004 ***

I'll begin making arrangements and getting out the announcements. And let's see if we can get a bigger turnout for this year's outing! And I plan to have everyone meet under the Eiffel Tower and, when gathered, we're gonna hit TOMB RAIDER for a photo op and for "first rides."

This year's outing is gonna be great kids. Prizes, games, and riding until you puke! Plan on being there. Bring your friends!

Would there be any huge flea markets...or really cool game stores we could all go to the next day?? I'd travel a few hours to make a game hunting/roller coaster riding weekend! How about trading/selling at your house? That would make it cool too!

Thought I'd give this a friendly bump up top, 1 month until the planned outing. Anyone else?Your timing is perfect, and mine is lousy. :embarrassed:

Just found out - last night in fact - that my prescence is required at home that exact weekend. So that specific date had become an "out" for me. I still wish to make this happen and - if everyone else is available on June 26 - I'm gonna be the odd man out again. :(

Anyway, let's get a hands-up. If you're available, sound off. If not, sound off so we can quickly hammer out a new date. regardless, Kings Island *is* this year's destination for the DP crew, so let's get crackin'.

last call for confirmation - who's available on June 26th? The poll is pretty close too.

Oobgarm
05-25-2004, 09:37 AM
And to be quite honest, either date is fine by me. If more people can attend in July, then we can do it then. It doesn't matter one bit to me. Perhaps we can get this topic shadowed in OT or something? :)

Like I said, I'm already going on the 17th with the youth group from church, but we (wife and 2 yr. old) are gonna spend the night and go to the zoo on Friday. So really anything you guys wanna do is cool with me.

I'm in for either day...really makes no diff to me. My wife would like to come along too, but being pregnant will definitely severely limit what she can do, which she realizes. Said she'd hold my head if I puke after riding the Beast (smartass...).

I'm still going to try to go, and I could make it either day. But, July 17th would be better for me I think. Origins is that weekend in June, and a lot of people are relying on me as a ride, so I'd prefer the July date.

Oobgarm
06-07-2004, 08:05 AM
So, we're close to 3 weeks away from the planned date of June 26th. I think that a show of hands is in order for those attending. I'd say we should have 6 or more people attending to make it worth everyone's while to drive here. I see that there are a couple of people here from Cleveland and at least one from West Virginia.

I'm actually kinda thinking that maybe we should just kinda skip this whole thing since it doesn't really seem that there is much interest in going, both dates considered. Prove me wrong?

WizDawg

A buddy of mine called me up yesterday afternoon and asked me to go to King's Island last night. Seeing that I went ahead and got a season pass, I told him I was up for it. I scouted out the park a bit, making note of the arcades and what games were in them. Oh, and rode some rides, too.

Games spotted: Time Crisis 2 & 3, DDR Xtreme and 3rd Mix, Fight Maniacs, MTV DrumScape, Soul Calibur II, Capcom vs. SNK 2, and numerous driving and fighting titles. The arcade near the Beast had an Ultracade inside with a ton of games on it. Wish I could remember some of them, but there were a lot, trust me.

After going, I've decided that I'm going to attend both dates. Maybe I just needed to get the cobwebs out or something, but I realized how much fun the rides are. That, and it gives me an opportunity to meet more DP folk-which is quite the addicitve thing once you start meeting people.

If you want/need any info regarding the Cincinnati area, such as lodging or anything, you can send me a PM.

Wizdawg: I spotted THREE Lighthouse machines, all with GBA's inside of them. :P

OK thanks Oobgarm! I've been practicing my 'stop the arrow' quick reflexes on Mario vs. DK bonus stages. I believe I'm up for the challenge. What time do you want to meet up on June 26th. 1:00?

Oobgarm
06-10-2004, 10:29 AM
OK, here's the basic plan for the event, both days:

Meet at the Eiffel Tower between 12:30-1:00 PM. Then it's off for rides and games. The park is open until 11:00 both days. Delerium and The Beast are must-rides.

If anyone is looking to eat, I highly suggest eating before you arrive, taking something along and leaving it in a cooler in your vehicle, or maybe even leaving the park and coming back, as there is a Mc D's and Taco Bell nearby. Food is terribly expensive inside PKI, and two people could eat fast food for less than the price of a meal for one person inside the park. That's what I did yesterday, but there really weren't that many people there. That's something we can all figure out while we're there, I suppose. But do keep it in mind.

Game trading is as-yet undetermined. We won't be doing any trading at the park, that's for certain. Perhaps those who are staying thru Sunday can arrange something. Once again, something we can kinda figure out as we go along.

PKI, huh? I live like ten minutes away. In fact, I worked there last summer. Worst job ever. If possible, I would recommend getting there when the park opens. And, as mentioned before, do yourself a favor and avoid eating there because it's pretty expensive. Also, the Tomb Raider ride = thumbs down. Long line for short dumb ride. I don't know if you know or not, but definitely check the dates and make sure that you're not coming on bring a friend free day or something like that because it will be insane and not worth your time. Um, yeah, not too much to say about it I guess. I might come with if I don't have to work.

well, I'm out now. After all the rain we've had this spring our racing season, at the track I work at, is changing. We were supposed to have this weekend off which would allow me to hang out on saturday, but they are trying to make up a few races so now I have to work. Sorry.

I did have a good time there this past Thursday. In honor of the the 25 years the beast has been in operation, I rode it 25 times. The Delirium looks insanely sick (I'm a guest of "large stature" so I couldn't ride it) I spent about $10 trying to win a GBA SP from the machine in the arcade near the Beast. I took my daughter on a few rides so that made up for not riding Delirium. I hope y'all have a good time. Oh....and buy a small pop when you get there and save the cup, any concession stand will fill it up with ice water for free!!

Add me to questionable for July....it'd cost a lot o' gas money for me to get there, plus a ticket for the park. I wouldn't be on the rides very much, I'd just be there to see y'all. Debating whether I should just wait for CGE...I might be cutting it close if I did both.

bigdaddychester
06-21-2004, 05:08 PM
...and one more thing. If anyone (friends, parents, neighbors) is a member at a credit union, check and see if they have/can get a discount ticket to Kings Island. We only paid $26.00 for our tickets. If you're within a 3 hour drive, I'm sure someone will have discount tix.

Kroogah
06-21-2004, 06:39 PM
Scratch my name off the list. It'd either be a $200 plane ticket that would jeopardize my CGE plans, or a 6 1/2 hour drive and I've never even driven on a highway before. See y'all in August.

Aaaugh. I'm afraid that life just kicked me in the groin with an unexpected $700 medical bill (well, actually $1900, but I'm pretty sure that the insurance will reimburse $1200 of it). This, unfortunately, means that the money I was going to lavish on extravagant gifts for DPers at KI, as well as on the admission ticket, has been, well, spent. OK, while still extremely doubtful, I do have a question that might help me decide.

About how much money would I need to set aside for this kind of trip? I realize there is the ticket, parking (??), food...

I'm still on the fence...more on the doubtful side, but I'm really wanting to go...

WizDawg
07-14-2004, 10:16 PM
I remember parking was around $9. I got a ticket at a credit union which was $26.25. If you pay at the gate it's $43 I think. Food/water at the park runs about $10-$15 total. Don't forget some money for the arcade(stay away from the Lighthouse machine). I'd would again if I could, it was alot of fun. But I really like riding the coasters. Last Saturday I went to Geauga Lake and July 5th I went to Cedar Point. Cedar Point is considered the best amusement park but IMHO King's Island is very close. It has some very good rides. The Son of Beast was my favorite, very smooth and fast. Geauga Lake is an average park, but the only line was for X-Flight. All the other rides were walk up and get on. So you could ride as much as you wanted which was cool. The best ride at CP is the Millennium Force but the wait can be 2 hrs on a busy day. I remember the wait in line at King's Island wasn't that bad, plus it goes faster when you're chatting about video games and stuff. I plan on going back to GL during Halloween Haunt.

Oobgarm - FYI, they still had the Lighthouse machines at CP but they didn't have anymore SPs in them. I did see 1 blue GBA though. And the price to play was only 50 cent. GL had 4 of them I think. No GBAs, but you could win a portable TV, a pay as you go cell phone, a DVD player. and some other stuff.

Have fun.

Food/water at the park runs about $10-$15 total. .

Remember, if you ask them for a cup of ice water they will give it to you at no charge. When I went a few weeks ago, one of the folks there told us all we needed to do was ask, they cannot refuse you. The food, however, was quite expensive. Usually a break at the Fest House is pretty refreshing considering it is air conditioned.

And somebody better win the GBA SP at the arcade near the beast!!!!

Oobgarm

Admission: $42.99 at the park, $32.99 if you buy from PKI.com and print out your ‘E-Ticket’.

Parking: $9.00 per car

Food/etc.: A minimum of $6-7 per meal, perhaps more depending on what you want to eat, I only intend on eating once around 4-5:00. Six-inch subs at the Subway stand were $4.69 each. You can buy one drink early on and use the cup/bottle for the rest of the day at water fountains. And then there’s always funnel cakes…

I’d maybe allocate $5-$10 for the arcade too, just in case. And do stay away from the Lighthouse machines. They’re the devil. A devil that takes $1 from your per play. And gives you nothing in return.

WE NEED ANOTHER PERSON TO COME SINCE WE ONLY HAVE 5 GOING AS OF RIGHT NOW. ONE MORE PERSON ENSURES THAT EVERYONE ALWAYS HAS A RIDING PARTNER. :)

EEP! I don't wanna ride by myself.....it makes me nervous.

I'm all set. I assume we're still meeting around 12:30 p.m. by the Eiffel.

My report was taken off my livejournal, which focused more on having port in town. But this excerpt is what went on at the park:

-----------------------------
Saturday’s forecast was a good one, temperatures were supposed to be mild and a bit overcast. We left for the park at about 10:30 or so, stopped at Mickey D’s for breakfast, got some gas and snacks, and headed for the park. After a botched attempt at parking for free, we got out and went up to the gates. The line to go through the metal detectors was a bit long, and the line to get a ticket wasn’t exactly short, either. Once we were in the park, we had just a little over an hour to kill before we met Kid Fenris by the Eiffel Tower. We scoped out the arcade closest to the entrance, spent a bit of money, and played the Whack-a-Mole game since they were giving out Sonic the Hedgehog themed plushes. We got Tune a Tails plush, which appeared to be the last one since I never saw them again. We then rode the first ride of the day, the Racer (http://rcdb.com/installationdetail69.htm). It’s a simple out-and-back coaster, with two trains, one forward and one backward. To get things started off on a gentle note, w rode the train that faced forwards.

After the ride, we went and waited for the aforementioned KF to arrive. Once we had all met, we made a trek over to ride the Beast (http://rcdb.com/installationdetail67.htm). The line was a bit on the long side (not as long as Tomb Raider, however), but it gave us an opportunity to talk and get to know each other better. It’s a great coaster and an excellent way to really kick things off at the park. After that ride, we stopped in the nearby arcade to spend some time. The Ultracade machine got some serious playtime. As we walked back up to the front of the park, we played the Whack-a-Mole again, and I netted myself a Knuckles plush. Continuing on, we stopped and rode the smaller Adventure Express (http://rcdb.com/installationdetail70.htm) coaster, a slower but rather jerky ride. We then made our way back up to the front of the park, and check out the wait on the Delirium ride. After watching Brad (a board member you don't know) almost get himself stuck in the display chair, we found out that Port was just a fraction of an inch too tall to ride—which put him in the category of ‘guest of extreme proportions’. We then went over to ride the Son of Beast (http://rcdb.com/installationdetail584.htm). The wait for it was a bit longer than the other rides, but the time passed quickly since we discussed videogames for most of the wait. It was at that point that Kid Fenris displayed his vast knowledge of obscure and kitschy Japanese games. The ride was very fun; much less brutal than the last time I rode it. However, Port’s loins might suggest otherwise.

Port, Brad, and KF checked out the line for Drop Zone, but decided that it was too long to wait in. Since it was nearby, we decided to hop on =http://rcdb.com/installationdetail73.htmTop Gun. There was NO line for that ride. It was pretty much an on-and-off affair. By then we were all pretty hungry, so we stopped at a little place and ate some popcorn chicken. We were a bit indecisive about what to ride next, as we had to get in line for the last ride at 9:30 or close to it. The line for the Vortex (http://rcdb.com/installationdetail71.htm) seemed manageable, so we waited. There were three trains going on the ride, so the line went very quickly. The second to last ride was the Flight of Fear (http://rcdb.com/installationdetail66.htm). This ride has the longest wait, at just a bit over 1.5 hours. There’s no doubt the long wait was worth it, though. I did get to see the poop monster again—those of you at the last meet surely remember him.

There was still a bit of time to kill before we got in line at 9:30, so we hung out in the arcade again. Then we got in line for what was going to be our last ride of the evening: The Beast at night. I’d heard that The Beast gave an amazing nighttime ride, but nothing prepared me for how simply AWESOME this ride was going to be. I believe this was a first for all of us there, but it was no doubt the most fun and exhilarating ride we rode all day. Since the ride is nestled in the woods, there’s not much light and the tunnels are simply PITCH BLACK when you go through them. I can’t wait to get back there and ride it again. As we made our way back home, it was fast approaching midnight. We stopped by Buffalo Wild Wings again (twice in two days, mind you), so Port could sample their amazing hot sauce one last time before he left he next day. We then got home and crashed, everyone was pretty exhausted from the long day.
---------------------------------------
I think that the Flight of Fear and the nighttime Beast ride have been chosen as the best 2 rides of the day.

Excellent, excellent. I'm a huge fan of The Beast, which makes me all the sadder that I had to miss out. Next year, boys.

If I'd been there, though, I would have taken a miss on the popcorn chicken and gotten the Skyline 6-way (with Battenburg seepage).

Next year indeed.

You are a stronger man than I, for I am certain that the Skyline chili would have made any attempts at riding rollercoasters preposterous.
