Blaming the fierce holiday price wars in toys, KB Toys Inc. announced Wednesday that it filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

Woohoo! Byebye KB!

Wow. Well, that sucks. Not from a gaming standpoint, but from a toy standpoint. Here, your choices are KB or TRU and KB always seems to have lots of little cool toys, and at good discounts.

Now, to decide -- pick up that Gamorrean Guard now, or wait for the price to drop?

Chapter 11

heres a link:

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/pf/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0002/20040114/091539184.htm

I haven't been in a KB to buy toys for years now. Heck, the games I got there during they're holiday sale is probably the only time I've shopped there in years. It is kind of sad to see a store that I went to alot as kid go under, but I'll get over it once the going out of business sales pick up. :D

Likewise, although I always stayed away from KB because they were too expensive.

Anyway, I can't wait for the liquidation sales!

Any idea when this goes into effect? It probably would be worth going now, right?

I kinda doubt it. I'm sure that there will be some deals posted on CheapAssGamer at some point. I'd say give it at least a week, maybe two.

Ah, since it's filing for Chapter 11 (reorganization), the company will stick around (at least in the short term), and not all of its stores will close (although some probably will). So don't worry too much, Kaine!

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is when the whole company is liquidated.

in my town we have Walmart/kmart/kbtoys/FYE that sell games.. thats it.. kmart has nothing.. FYE has a lil... and the On-Cue in my town was liquidated.. so if any of the kbtoy stores are shutdown, one in my town will definitely drop :(.. if some good stores dont come to my town, i'm gonna be screwed... or our walmart will just get real pimped out from all the game sales lmao.. either way.. i hope the kb i my town doesnt shutdown

KB is putting small "stores" inside of the local Sears stores here in Phoenix, at least the East Valley. So, I wouldnt count them out yet.

Doesn't matter to me. My KB cleared out all their video game stuff months ago.

We had a small KB store just open recently in the local Factory Stores here, so I don't know if they'll entirely disappear from my area (Bay Area, CA), but it seems their sales so far haven't been anything to write home about.

Damn, as soon as I heard they were in trouble, I got excited... it looks like their prices still suck. Oh well, I never shopped there much anyway.

That was one of the items that was 25% off for the last two weeks of December and first week of January. I had to hit three stores to find one that didn't look like it was used as a step stool.

To be honest, I am surprised this did not happen sooner. The local one seems to never re-stock and the prices are hit or miss. When they mark something down, it's a good deal, but beyond that, it is nothing special.

Ahh...you're right. I always get 7 and 11 mixed up. Its fairly reasonable to expect that the 400 stores that did the sale earlier will be the ones to shut down.

Assuming the stores that had poor game sales had the sale. And the stores with poor game sales had poor sales in general. Thus they get the boot.

The product may continue to go down in price, but the big ticket items (consoles, newer games, demo consoles) will most likely be shipped off to other stores like Kmart did. Still, there will be deals to be had.

The KB's one of the KB's in my area just closed down right before christmas. They had everything marked at 50% off. I stocked up on a few new games for no more than $25. It was great. I don't know if The bankruptcy is the reason for closing but for 50% off who cares. :)

On a related aside...can anybody make heads or tails of this site:

http://www.games-toy.com/

Every link points (or tries to point) to KB Toys' website, and if you read the descriptions of each one it's just...well...they're all the same, for one, and it's just plain silly.

If that's KB's idea of advertising, then...

It sounds like alot of people are glad this is happening. Well, the video game deals are cool. But to me also, it's sad to see a store I visited often as a child go under to. Everything goes under to fucking Wal-Mart, I really hate that damn store and only go there when I have too. I even hate the smell of that place.
I will definately have to visit my kay-bee's soon.

Kaybee is being shut down because it's a crappy, horribly owned and maintained store. Th place is almost always as cramped and cluttered as a radio shack, and it plays music suitable for an elevator. But here's a news flash, it's a KIDS TOY STORE. They need ROOM TO MOVE, and CHILDRENS music.

Besides which, I hate toys r us, but THAT'S a good toy store. Kaybee, all personal feelings aside, was a poorly run business. (Lets mark the price up, then put a sale price for the real original price and get sued over it ring a bell?)

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I'd shop there if they had stuff I wanted and had it for a good price.

Actually, I don't shop at Target or Toys R Us either, because they don't have any good prices either.

I can always get the best price and selection either at my local Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or EB. Or online. Amazon rocks for used PC and console games sometimes for great prices. :D

I never shop at wal-mart. In fact, nobody should shop at wal mart. Obviously, me saying something strong like that deserves an explanation. well, lets get started. I will use a list for easy reading:

1.) They are a huge monopoly. In small towns, wal mart has been known to charge $75.00 for one X Box game, and I have my brother who went to Beuna Vista to vouch for that price. (That college is in Storm Lake, Iowa)

2.) They don't allow small time businesses to get a start. With how much money they have, it will not hurt them to NOT locate in one city, where some schmuck needs a few bucks, so he wants to run a small store.

3.) Wal Mart disboyes numerous laws. Where is the wal mart in your city located? Is it in the city limits? Roughly over 95% of all wal marts are located outside of the city limits so that they have less restrictions on the things they do. The wal mart in Omaha just relocated to just outside the city limits, not even 1 mile away from its old location.

4.) For a place that has most, if not all stores, open 24 hours, they pay like crap. You could go get a job at a KB right now and be hired and paid for a higher wage than what wal mart pays you.

5.) Tracking devices. Wal mart has the technology to put small tracking devices as small as a grain of salt (or smaller, I can't remember the exact size) to ensure that they "stop shoplifters" they will be sewing into all of their clothes. You could easily put information on these devices, as well as be tracked when you leave the store. The Unirted States government even told them not to, but so far has not been doing 1 single thing to stop them, not one, and wal mart is still going to do it.

Have fun next time you go to wal mart thinking of all that. These are the reason why i no NOT shop there.

Have'nt you allready posted on here how much you hate Wal-Mart?

Can we PLEASE not get off topic this time, people? If you want to debate that, start a thread in off topic.

I'm HAPPY to see Kay Bee shut down, personaly. Maybe a decent store will take their place in the local mall.

<shrug> so don't shop at walmart, more power to you. Theres nowhere else I can get Q*tips, milk, screws, a light bulb, some apples, and a $5 DVD in the same place.
Hell, without walmart, that would be at LEAST 3-4 different stores.

So do I buy videogames there? not a chance in hell. I have bought exactly 3 videogames/systems/accessories at walmart in the past 5-6 years (pricing errors), their game stuff prices SUCK. Do I bitch about how much the game prices suck all the time? No, I just don't buy them.

Just an FYI, if your KB is closing, you should be able to put your name down to acquire their fixtures when theyre gone.

Sorry Detroiters. I already got first dibs on everything game related (signage, pamphlet holders, etc) at the Telegraph and West Chicago location :D
