To the people packing and moving my Video Game Collection:

You are probably wondering why someone would amass so many video games and then have to move them. I really dig video games, particularly the old ones, and I’m a bit of a compulsive collector. Well, unfortunately as you know in the Bay Area, real estate isn’t a simple thing. It wasn’t our intention to ever have to move this stuff again, but it looks like we’re on our way.

I accumulated all this stuff over the last 8 years, and it amounts to a first rate classic game collection. The reason for the mess is that I haven’t had the time to unpack and organize the lot completely (and setup the various TVs so that the games can be played any time.) Most of it was actually in storage for a few years, and has only seen the light of day in the last few months.

Unfortunately it all goes back into boxes, with your help. As with many ‘collectibles,’ the boxes for the games are almost as important as the games themselves. Please pack them with care for the packaging, as every ding or crease makes the stuff a little less cool (and valuable, although I never intend to sell it) for me. Try not to pack the boxed games and systems in such a way as to allow the boxes to be crushed or otherwise damaged. If you pack them a bit more carefully than you would CDs or books, most of the items should be fine.

Just about everything in the room and a few things in the mud room (the storage room off the hallway) need to be packed. The mud room is mostly already packed in plastic bins, although there are a few obvious things sitting out that need to be packed as well. There are some items in the cabinet to the left of the entry way that also need to be packed.

Please do not pack the wireless router downstairs or any of the packaging stuff and tools under the desk (the one that’s straight ahead from the stairway.) The materials under the other desk (to the left of the stairway) need to be packed. The cabinets are mostly stuffed with items that also need to be packed.

I appreciate your help and care. I hope I never have to move this stuff again.

-Ian

This, buddy, is why everything game-related I own waltzed into my new digs in my two arms and on my own two feet. Can't...even...imagine...this kinda paranoia. :eek 2:

No way in hell I would let some strangers move my collection. I would be way to stressed.

This is why I hired a 'mover' instead of a moving company. I help loading/unloading, and got to selectively move boxes on my own. worked out way better. Also brought my computer over in a cab, instead of the big-ass truck.

I wish I had time to deal with the moving. NO WAY I could get this stuff packed in less than 6 months with my current work schedule.

Unfortunately, worse yet, my wife was supervising, which mean 'just shove it all in.' Ah, well.

Paranoia? That's a little strong. I thought my letter was rather gently worded.

I agree, and the clarity of your honest letter will be respected by all decent people.

The letter is gently worried, but you've got to be paranoid about this. I wouldn't trust anyone but me to move any of my systems. Games, eh, I don't have many carts at all and damaged cd/dvd cases can be replaced, no problem.

I do hope it all turns out, you get it into a massive game hall, set it all up and send pictures.

Good luck with all that. I hope everything stays in the condition that we all know your stuff is in right now.

Good luck to everything arriving as the way it was.

When I move. I put my personal stuff in my car and drive it there myself. Do NOT trust the Movers to be "Careful" with your stuff. Especially fragile stuff like carts and systems. Or easily breakable irreplaceable (Or hard to replace) big jewel cases.

Wouldn't it just be easier to rent a U-Haul and get some competent relatives or close friends to help? thats what I'd do.

Still, I take my own responsibility when it comes to moving the computer and personal items.

I'm always worred that a mover will see all those consoles in all of their original boxes and try to strut off with something. So I bring 'em with me.

For the boxed games I actually used rubbermaid containers which worked pretty well. Mind you I packed 'em myself so I was perhaps a little more careful.

Heh. You've obviously never seen Ian's collection. Its size is beyond the comprehension of mere mortals like you and me. A fleet of U-Hauls would barely begin to move it.

Well, maybe I'm exaggerating, but I know Ian's got loads o' stuff. I sure wouldn't want to move it (unless it was into MY place). LOL

I too, am in the packing club. Moving into a new place this Feb. 1st. Started boxing up the NES carts last night.. :eek 2: It took forever because I'd pull out a cart and see some dirt and need to clean it!!!

I've got so much stuff I think I'll take a break from collecting (until Feb 10 or so ;) )
