View Full Version : Your Thoughts on Sonic Heroes
Hey!
I am almost finished with Sonic Heros. From what I've played it is outstanding. I really enjoyed Sonic Adventure and SA2 had its moments (all of which are while playing Sonic). I still think work could be done to make it perfect, but as far as platform titles go it is up at the top. I want a "real" Sonic title that stars Sonic only. It doesn't look like I will get my wish but at least what Sonic Team puts out is great. I was wondering what everyone else thought of this title. SH hasn't been getting great reviews besides one in PLAY magazine where it calls the game genius (or something close, I don't have the mag in front of me for reference). I tend to agree more with that lone review then just about everyone else. Again, tell me what yall think!

It's ok. I have not been playing this as much as I would like to because I have FFX to play, but also because I've beaten it with one team and don't really want to play through 7 (Well, 14, but every 2 levels are practically the same, then a boss, the 1 more area, boss, etc.). I hate switchjing between party members all of the time, and the camera is pretty bad (Not as bad as the old adventures though). If you REALLY want a Sonic game, buy it (Or do what I did and trade in 4 non-sports games at EB), but otherwise, I'd wait.

I loved it! I love a game that moves fast and keeps up the pace, sorta like THPS games do, but Im no where near done cause I havent had time to play. Its awesome though.
The Rail level kinda had my heart racing the whole time, I kept thinking I was going to fall (which I did....many, many times). Oh man, so fun, so fun

Haven't played it, but the commercials are pretty funny.

I am a die hard sonic fan. Well at least I used to be. I bought a dreamcast like many did for sonic and sonic a lone. SA1 was awesome when it came out.
I got SA2 as my first Gamecube game, and BOY O BOY was I mixed about that one. It was cool when I got to play as sonic, but geez, that hardly ever happened at all, plus there was something about Sonic Adv 2 that just seemed like the game was playing itself half the time... know what I mean?
I played the sonic heroes demo on the mario kart disk, and I nearly shed a tear, I was like "finally, he's back" the demo was a lot of fun. If the entire game was just the SOnic team (Sonic, Knuckles and Miles "Tails" Prower) then I would be in heaven.
BUT, like someone above said, we need a TRUE SONIC GAME, JUST SONIC. thats what its all about. Heroes seems very cool from the demo, but I'm not buying it at full price.
I'll say it again. We need a game that focuses on SONIC (Knuckles and Tails are okay) But really, who the hell cares about the aligator that was in Knuckles Chaotix.
Question abotu Sonic Heroes - How is the Camera System shaping up? That really plagued SA2.

Sonic heroes is sweet. I'm glad to see the Chaotix boys make a come back, but I think it was missing a team involving Nack, Scratch, and Grounder :P

I find it worse in this game--but, then again, I barely had any problems with it in SA2 or SA2:B. SA1, though, I did have more.

Me! I was thrilled to see the Chaotix team - a lost chapter of Sonic history finally acknowledged! ;)

No offense taken here. I understand - the purely Sonic games have always been the highlights of the franchise.

Jive3d-
I find that the camera is odd in Sonic Heros. I am almost finished with Team Sonics levels and really have no complaints. I find that Team Rose and Team Chaotix have a good camera system as well. The biggest problem with the camera that i've experienced has to be with, you guessed it, Team Dark. Somtimes the camera is just too close. It doesn't happen often, but for some people a camera fucking up once is one time too many. As for the camera system in SA and SA2. I honestly didn't have much of a problem. I hold SA in high esteem. Sonics portions are amazing- graphic gliches and all. Even the other characters are ok. I really dig Mario 64 as well and was never bothered by the graphic gliches in that game either. I enjoyed Sonics quest in SA2 but felt that the other characters have to go, esp. Rouge and Knuckles. I do love Knuckles though! If you are a true Sonic fan I would suggest picking up this title now! It will bring a smile and a tear to your face. If you don't have a GC pick it up for the Xbox. If you don't have either system buy one and a copy of SH! Avoid the PS2 version. It runs at 30FPS. Apparently Sonic Team isn't very experienced with the ps2 hardware aka trash. I don't blame um. It is too bad though considering Sega wanted this title to sell big and they release the worst version for the system with the highest installed base. Oh well. buy this game!

I did too, but it was more along the lines of "what happened...?"
I did not like the demo at all. I found it depressing that the same control issues that were in Sonic Adventure are still present in the the newest game what? 3 or 4 years later?. I also didn't quite dig the 3 member team.

I like seeing them too, but I hate their levels. "Destroy all of the enmies... collect x number of y... etc." I hate the first city level, where, I'm stuck with them, as I always miss like 1 robot near the end and have to go all the way back through the level.

I've played through over half the Team Sonic levels and a few of the Team Chaotix levels (just for old times sake, I used to enjoy Knuckles Chaotix). I've seen Cafeman Jr play a few levels that I personally haven't reached --the forest level looks pretty cool but I didn't get there yet.
I think Sonic Team has done a good job with this game. Graphically, although the 'art direction' isn't all that impressive and it reminds one of Sonic Adventure 2 sometimes too much, but techically there are some cool things to see! Playing a platformer this fast at 60fps with winding, bouncing, zooming levels is a rush! But the rush wears off.
The switching works well in many cases; I enjoyed the 3D pinball/casino levels (the closest to a 3D version of Sonic 2's Casino level I've seen yet!) but I had some trouble trying to find my way OUT of it. The animation of the characters is the best its ever been, too. The in-game music is really good most of the time -- it isn't horrendous 80s butt rock to me but on many levels fit perfectly.
At times it is fun, but I still think Sonic Heroes is missing a certain something that might have made it more exciting. But I'm not ready to diss the game yet -- I don't feel I understand how best to play it yet. It has similar themes (island/beach, or the casino) and many props to interact with (like rails and destoyable crates & balloons) but it feels very different from either Sonic Adventure game.
Personally I never liked the rails parts of SA2, and I didn't like them here either. I wish Sonic Team would scrap these.
Oh, and I liked the Chaotix team. Their super move is freaking HILARIOUS -- press Z and one of them starts beating a drum, another gets a guitar, and the big Crocodile starts singing very badly. BAD MUSIC -- it clears the scene of ALL enemies. LOL
Personally I don't think I'd buy this game for $50 even though it has some nice stuff in it.
Thus ends Cafeman's scatterbrained diatribe.

is it true that the ps2 version has the less-exciting graphics of all versions???
By all accounts the PS2 version lacks as compared to the Xbox and GC versions. In an interview, Sega went on record saying that the PS2 version runs at 30FPS.

yeah the PS2 is the inferior system as far as the big 3 are concerned at the moment.
Ya know, I never even played Knuckles Chaotix, I really wanted a 32X back in the day, but never got to experience anything on it. Maybe that's why I lashed out, oh my Sad Childhood! Sob Sob!
Just kidding, except about never actually playing anything on 32X.
I'll totally pick up heroes once it gets cheap! 50 bucks right now is being saved for MGS: Twin Snakes!
I was never impressed by Chaotix. I was put off by the fact that there was supposed to be a Sonic title on 32X and instead we got a spin off. It had its moments but I felt that the whole team based gameplay left much to be desired. The gameplay in SH and KC really don't have much to do with each other thankfully. I still play KC every once in a while. The end boss was cool as shite! Don't wait for SH to down in price, support Sonic and buy now!

I thought Knuckles Chaotix was an average game at best, but it had blinding color, awesome 3D polygon bonus rounds, and some cool bosses as I recall. So I did enjoy it for what it was. Sonic Heroes plays like ONE MILLION DOLLARS [/Dr. Evil] compared to Knuckles Chaotix's shiny penny.
ANother thing that ticks me off but is really a good trait of SH -- it's tough in some places! One boss on Team Dark's stages was too tough for us, we never did beat it.

I myself absolutely love Sonic Heroes! I mean i liked Sonic adventure 1 + 2 for the dreamcast (I also own them both for the gamecube now, its awesome that they re-released them) and they were both great game that did have there slow moments, but the things in sonic heroes just take my breath away! I really don't like heights and believe it or not when playing the rail level my hands were kind of sweating.

DrJustinRamone posted in another thread that Circuit City is dropping all three versions of Sonic Heroes to $19.99. I'm thinking about getting the GC version now. I've been reading reviews, but I also like to read what other DP'ers think.
I'm also bumping this so that any DP'ers who have played the game and joined the board after the previous post or missed it the first time around can chime in with their thoughts.

First, off, Sonic Heroes does have a great soundtrack
Second $19.99?? Holy crap...looks like I gotta hunt down the Cube verison now
I honestly wasn't too found of Sonic Heroes, I felt the diffiiculty of the game was a pain and the camera angles were kinda so-so at times
Other then that, it was fun, I really loved that the Chaotix team was formed...and I was happy that Sega doesn't ignore the Sonic games, regardless of being a spin-off.
I played the Xbox verison first, I was stuck on a few levels, and kept dying so easily.
Yet I do admit to loving a challenge, this really kicked me in the head when it came to timing jumps and pipe grinding.
As for 32X I Loved Knuckles Chaotix...it was different...it was unique..and it really pushed the 32X hardware to a good limit...I do admit it was a bite slower then most Sonic games, but I have to hand it to Sega for trying something new

A big ol' "MEH" from me. The poor controls and horrible camera system ruined it for me. About the twentieth time I fell off the same damn ledge due to the odd camera angle and the fact Sonic's homing attack just would not hit a nearby enemy so I could get back up, I quit playing it and I haven't touched it since.
The "new" Cube Sonic that's being touted around really better be something special, because if it's more of the crap Sonic Team has been shoveling out the past few years, I am certainly not going to get it.

I really loved sonic heroes. Not quite as much as the Sonic Adventures though, mainly due to its weaker story. It's most definitely worth $19.99, so If you haven't bought already don't hesitate to do so!

you have to play as the four teams to see the complete story.
Besides from that, the sound in that game rox0rz.
Sonic Heroes is a good game yet disappointing compared to the Sonic games that debuted before it for the SEGA consoles.
