Today I saw a used NGPC sitting at the GameCrazy. It looked lonely. It was priced at $35, bundled with a Sonic game. Judging from "ebay pricing", that's (high but) not completely unreasonable; but before I invest, let me hear the testimonials. How does it compare with today's gold standard, the GBA SP?

The Ghouls 'n Ghosts minigame in SNK vs. Capcom rules my world, and it will rule yours as well, so tread carefully.
Falselei! seems to me a pretty decent game.
Overall, a very nice little system with some quite decent games.

you need to go back first thing in the morning and buy that.just becouse you could find it slightly cheaper on ebay means nothing.i mean its right there in front of you,not halfway across the country.i adore gba games but there is nothingt hat compares to the neo.
You can also pick a new one out at amazon.com. 29.99, but I don't know what shipping is on it. Couldn't be much more, though, and they have a few colors available.

ya, I snagged the same deal on amazon. Its a pretty slick little system. The only downside is your probably going to need to mail order all your games (I havent found anywhere local selling them)

They have bundles at GameStop of these. $70 for a system and 6 games. Then next to it another pack with like 5 or 6 more games for like $40. I'll have to look closer next time, but it seemed cool and like an easy deal if you just wanna play. (No packaging at all. Just blister packs. So no boxes or semingly instructions if you want to collect.)

Best portable ever. Period. End of story.
There are not many bad games for this sucker. It's got the best Sonic, great Metal Slug ports, awesome Tennis, awesome Golf, what I think is awesome Baseball, a million fighting games that rule and a ton of great puzzle games. This system is completely, 100% worth it.
I bought it for $75 the day they were discontinued with Sonic (not in the whole "this will be valuable" rush but in the "I wanted one for months but didn't have the money... Oh well, it's on a credit card that I'll pay off next month") I couldn't be happier with it. The Sonic game alone has passed countless hours as I try to unlock everything in it.
You should definitely get it.

Thanks, guys. One more question set, though. How visible is the screen under various lighting conditions? Is it frontlit or backlit or nonlit? (After dealing with the original GBA, I gotta ask.)

Don't actually have one, but I have played around with DrJustinRamone's a few times and I can vouch that the screen is very good. It is nearly as good as the GP32's.

I like the control setup...while the games are only decent in my opinion...its still a nice system to have.
oh, PS, never say RoXx0r again please. Were not at gameFAQs.

I really enjoy mine. From the nice little boot screen to the odd built-in horoscope, to the lovely "click-stick." If you get one, I'd recommend the following games:
-Cardfighter's Clash: SNK or Capcom version
-Metal Slug 1st Mission
-Metal Slug 2nd Mission
-Picture Puzzle
-Shanghai Mini
-Pac Man
-at least one fighting game, depending on you preference: Match of the Millenium, Last Blade, Gal Fighters, Samurai Showdown, King of Fighter.
There's an awesome link at www.neogeoforlife.com 's links section where you can *ahem* "preview" some of the games if you so desire. And before you yell at me for this, I have a half dozen game and 3 NGPC systems. Also, some homebrews for it aren't half bad either.
edit: That's not too bad price-wise, although a patient shopper can definitely do better. Case in point: around October last year I watched a no-reserve Camo blue one on ebay and got it for $9.99, roughly $15 shipped. That's more the exception than the case, I suppose.

Get it. NOW.
Sonic is a good game (and a display of the NGPC color capabilities). My must haves are: Card Fighters Clash (aka digital crack), Puyo Pop (really Puyo Puyo II), Neo Turf Masters (3 full size courses, lots of collectibles --yes, collectibles in a golf game, really fun), and SNK Gals' Fighter (best fighter IMO)

Buy it..it's a great system and the Sonic game is lots of fun.
I like the control stick too, very neat for a portable.

YES!
The games are great (as said, you might have to mail order most of them) and the import games are even better. Its a region free divice so you don't need modchips or anything of the like.
Awesome control set up. I dig the thumbstick...much easier to use than any D-Pad. Nice screen, and it holds well too.

I was wondering about back-lighting, also.

No lighting of any sort, but it has an excellent screen. I did, however, get an Afterburner installed in my NGPC a few months back and it rocks. The dude who did the mod (Mash) now has a site up for his mod work:

At the linkage are some pics (though a lil blurry).

Evenwithout being backlit, it's a pretty easy screen to see. The colors are bright and clean and clear, I've never had much trouble seeing it even in dimly lit areas.
And as for whether or not it's a good system to buy, I'll repeat the common phrase here:
YES!
Cardfighters Clash, SNK vs. Capcom, Bust-a-Move Pocket, Sonic Pocket Adventure, The Last Blade, King of Fighters R-2, Samurai Showdown 2, Gal's Fighters... geez, what ISN'T good on this system?
Plus, you get to see Iori in a dress. :D LOL
edit: Just how far down does the battery life go when you use the backlighting? Does it cut it in half, or not that much?

Personally, I think that the screen is very seeable without the backlight in just about every lighting situation I've ever used it in. A totally quality portable, all the way through.
And I can't see the GBA screen worth a darn. I expected it to be on par with the NGP, but it just isn't anywhere near it.
