Let the speculation begin! Hoax? Jaguar mod? Who knows!

Someone needs to buy one of these things so we can figure out what's going on.

Uh, where do you see Jaguar, again?

I will say that I've seen a car CD player that has a "Jaguar" logo that looks JUST like that used by the Atari Jaguar, though :o

Their "Hot Rod" intraoral camera is a Jaguar painted silver and hung by it's joystick ports. At least, that's certainly what it looks like.

Wow! I know what happened here though- someone involved in the fabrication process simply made a mold of the original jaguar and retooled it a little bit. The handle at the top is molded in. It's cheaper to cast large lots of white plastic pieces than it is to clean and repaint old video game systems.

This does suggest someone could get ahold of one of these puppies and make an ivory jaguar by swapping some internals. :D

@ Bratwurst: That would be AWESOME! Even better...get some new Jag shells made up from the mouldings :D

I tried calling their number a little while ago and got a voice mail machine. I'll try them later to see if I could scrounge a shell from a broken returned unit or something.. just for kicks and wiggles.

All that's missing is a controll pad molded in white so the dentist can wedge the patient's mouth open with it.

"Dental Design with the Dentist in Mind" is that it says in the PDF...im SURE Atari though about dentists while designing it...also it says it has a "Modular Design" .... someone should call and question if it has a Mod Chip inside. LMAO

Anyone get a price for one of these yet?

Hee hee

"So, Atari Jaguar Shell Mold, it must be a shock to lose all the prestige, the red carpet, neon vectors (not to mention all the relationships with cartridges!) from the mid 90s and your days at Atari. What do you have to say to those who claim your importance in the world has fallen since the Atari days?"

"They're probably jealous...I love my new job! It's very humanitarian -- I help keep kids' teeth clean -- it's a very rewarding job. I still keep up with Mac sitting in the corner, we talk about the old days when we were the hottest stuff out there and we're looking forward to a time when we'll be in demand once again."

Heh. :P

Anyway, I'm curious as to just how Jaguar-based this is - is the Jag chipset strong enough to run a digital imaging system? It seems to use the same cartridge style, so maybe there's more going on here than just a retooled case shell.

I for one would be tickled if I saw that at my dentist's office. And then, probably a little frightened.

It isn't. They're just using the Jaguar mold to make cases, and they're sticking their own electronics inside.

As for driving a camera, I don't think that would be too much for the Jaguar to do... it's just a matter of bringing the data in fast enough to display it, which I don't think would be a problem.

As a big fan of the Jag, all I can say is this is utter BLASPHEMY!

But it's pretty funny, too, in a tragic kind of way. It's like some weird dream. "I dreamt my dog was talking to me in Lakota, but I could understand him anyway, and he was saying that someone had turned my Atari Jaguar into a dentist's camera...I woke up in a cold sweat."

Bratwurst, what about the cartridges? Can those moldings be made available seperately, or is it the same situation as the camera?

I didn't even think to ask about those, but I'm sure they'll still be reluctant to sell anything.

I'm sure someone could fabricate some elaborate scheme where they pretend they're an actual dental facility, order what they want, then send it back without the shells, internals smashed and claim some warranty business.. ;)

I read about this awhile back in Gameinformer (which i think is a crappy mag, but for free I won't complain more than i already have). I guess there were a whole crapload of Jaguars left over from the mid 90's and this Imagin company bought them all. Using the Jaguar shells instead of actually using their own resources saved them tons of money they would have spent on creating their own shell.

My scanner is biggity broken, but it's in issue 132 of gameinformer on page 32. April 2004 issue. If i can get it scanned, I'll post it somewhere.

O God no, I think GMR sucks as well. i didn't post to badmouth GI, I just remembered i saw this article in there and decided to toss my opinion on the magazine in. I think most mags have lost their edge since the early 90's. I find GI particularly boring. The page layouts, the editors, the reviews, etc. I'm sorry my opinion got you fired up, Jasoco. It wasn't intentional :embarrassed:

Ya, a buddy sent me this about 3-4 months ago. I guess Atari sold them the rights to use and the actuall Jaguar molds themselfs. It's not a Jaguar, nor does it have any Jaguar parts. But it is the case of a Jaguar and does look cool non the less. Atari was hard up for some easy money I guess.

Tricky XGood. As long as you don't like GMR either. ;)

I only like GI for the Classic section. And since it is indeed sort of "free", I can enjoy it.

I agree, mags are shit now. Even NP which used to be cool, albeit biased and self-centered. Now with ads, it's lost its feel. I only have it now because I wanted the Zelda collection and maybe a freebie video in the mail once in a while. Damn them for not doing the smart thing and including free Demo discs monthly. I mean, WTF?

That Jag thing rocks. I gotta wonder though, if they just gutted old systems, what did they do with the guts? Are they in the ET landfill?

bruhaha69
06-18-2004, 09:39 AM
That's a good question. I'd also like to know how much the whole cost them. I'm guessing they got the units for dirt cheap and probably just tossed the components in the gutter, but that seems like a pretty big waste. Not that those guts were being put to great use when they were inside the shell, but they deserved better. Thats no way for a console to go. Then again........It is helping in the battles against tooth decay and gum disease.

I heard about this, apparently it really is a Jaguar - the extra shells were sold to the dental company or something after the Jaguar went out of production IIRC.

I read about this somewhere else. They had the shells made using the old Jaguar molds.

There are a couple threads about this over on AtariAge. There were even rumors for a while that they were going to be making new cases using the old molds. Doesn't look like anything came of it though.

Here's some information from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Jaguar):

Imagin Systems, a manufacturer of dental imaging equipment, purchased the molding plates for several of the Jaguar's casings as, with minor modification, they were the right size for housing their HotRod camera. Even the game cartridge molds were reused to create an optional memory expansion card. Later product casings also bear a significant resemblance to the Jaguar.

I've seen this thing before. What makes me curious is the exact function of the cart. Notice that it, too, is based on the Jaguar mold.

Incidentally, the camera appears to have been discontinued in favor of this model, which still retains some Jag design elements:

http://www.imaginsystems.com/images/PRODUCTS_HR_NEWLOOK_BG.jpg

That the contours to receive the Jag CD peripheral are still there make me wonder if this case, too, was adapted from some unseen Jag prototype. Interesting.
