If I recall, these were done one year as a limited promotion toward the end of the Saturn's life in Japan. Maybe Sega knew the system was on the way out and 're-designed' it to make it cheaper?

Wait a second, this isn't a functional Saturn here, is it? It's hard to tell it's size from the pictures, since there's no reference.. but the measurements they give, and the relative size of the lid, I'm thinking it's too small to even fit a CD.

Plus, it says near the top that it's a "novelty" item... I think it's just a promotional thing.

Yeah, that's what I couldn't work out. It seems ambiguous at best, in his description. Which can only mean that it is not a functional Saturn as far as I am concerned. The other evidence seems to support this.
