The DP Random Definitely Not Underage Female Bunny Game Generator (tm) has chosen Keio Flying Squadron, the fab side-scroller for the Sega CD.
While most are quick to remember the failures of the Sega CD and its penchant or weak full-motion video games, there is a small library of high quality exclusive titles on the system as well. Sega CD (and Mega CD) owners were privvy to one of the finest hand-drawn side-scrolling shooters if the era, the incomparable Keio Flying Squadron by Success.
Ever play it? We'd like to hear your thoughts!
DP Guide sez:
U.S. Game Releases
Keio Flying Squadron (Sega CD, by JVC) $70/R7 +
a.k.a. Keio Yugekitai (Japan)
Developed by Success. Followed by a sequel on the Sega Saturn (Japan) titled appropriately "Keio Flying Squadron 2". Fighting/Side-Scrolling. EASTER EGGS: Check out the hidden "Super Catch" mini-game hidden in the code! To activate it, go to the title screen and press Left (x2), Right (x2), Down, Up, Down, Up. SANTULLI SLANT: If you can look past the cut scenes which seem to have been drawn and scripted for pedophiles and get right into the gameplay, you've got a stellar side-scrolling shooter to enjoy here. Keio contains some of the most colorful characters, from the tiny instantly killed cats to the gigantic juggernaut bosses. It always gets a chuckle out of me. The giant ship with the uncle sam characters popping in and out of various portals is particularly funny. Then again, I find those hats that you put two beer cans in and drink from particularly funny too, so remember where this is coming from. [Gr: 8, So: 9, Ga: 8, Ov: 8] Released 1993. #T-60185-50.
