The DP Random Definitely Not Underage Female Bunny Game Generator (tm) has chosen Keio Flying Squadron, the fab side-scroller for the Sega CD.

While most are quick to remember the failures of the Sega CD and its penchant or weak full-motion video games, there is a small library of high quality exclusive titles on the system as well. Sega CD (and Mega CD) owners were privvy to one of the finest hand-drawn side-scrolling shooters if the era, the incomparable Keio Flying Squadron by Success.

Ever play it? We'd like to hear your thoughts!

DP Guide sez:

U.S. Game Releases
Keio Flying Squadron (Sega CD, by JVC) $70/R7 +
a.k.a. Keio Yugekitai (Japan)
Developed by Success. Followed by a sequel on the Sega Saturn (Japan) titled appropriately "Keio Flying Squadron 2". Fighting/Side-Scrolling. EASTER EGGS: Check out the hidden "Super Catch" mini-game hidden in the code! To activate it, go to the title screen and press Left (x2), Right (x2), Down, Up, Down, Up. SANTULLI SLANT: If you can look past the cut scenes which seem to have been drawn and scripted for pedophiles and get right into the gameplay, you've got a stellar side-scrolling shooter to enjoy here. Keio contains some of the most colorful characters, from the tiny instantly killed cats to the gigantic juggernaut bosses. It always gets a chuckle out of me. The giant ship with the uncle sam characters popping in and out of various portals is particularly funny. Then again, I find those hats that you put two beer cans in and drink from particularly funny too, so remember where this is coming from. [Gr: 8, So: 9, Ga: 8, Ov: 8] Released 1993. #T-60185-50.

This is one game I'm hunting for. I know it's tough to find, but I'm hoping for an in-the-wild score on this one, since not everyone knows that there are a few pricey Sega CD games.

I haven't got the chance to play it yet, but the description makes it sound like it will be well worth the hunt.

Hey! Thanks for reminding me about this - I picked it up a month or two back for about £4 (the PAL MegaCD version is much easier to find), and from the brief go I had, it's smooth, fast (on a 60Hz modded machine, at least) and fun (and just a little bit crazy :) ).
I was meaning to go back and investigate further, but it got sidelined.
That's my evening sorted now...

A freidn of mine has it, and from what I played of ity, I'd say it's a damn fine game, and I'd love to get it. Now if I only had a Sega CD...

Accursed Sega CD... GAH! Why couldn't KFS and Snatcher have been ported to the Playstation... wait, Snatcher came to the PS... ahem. Why couldn't there be an American PS port of KFS and Snatcher?!? :(

This game does look very good, however... hey, if it's a shmup, it automatically gets a high score from me. LOL

Remi, the bunny girl doesn't detract from the appeal either... ;)

BTW, did you know the Japanese sequel is a platformer, and not a shmup? I hear it's still good, though.

Another game I will never own but since it is a shmup then I will play it on some crappy emulator then want the game.

To be honest, that's a tad overpriced for the PAL version. It generally goes for around £6-£9.

The emulator Gens ought to handle it. You've got a fairly modern computer, right? Try downloading Gens, along with the Genesis and Sega CD BIOS. I think you'll be pleased with the results.
