I never was a big PC gamer, but I have picked these up over the last few months. Anyone play any of these games? Should I waste my time starting any of them? They looked interesting to me so I figured what the hey.

Also, if anyone is interested in any of the titles let me know.

Kings Quest 4 and 5 are for sure worth a play (if you like classic adventures), they are also worth a bit

Fury 3 is the Microsoft version of the german game Terminal Velocity or something like that i think and should be very good, it could be that it has an Chris Hülsbeck Soundtrack, not sure about that

personally, I was a seirra freak as a kid. If your going to play KQ4 (I think that was the one), there was a bug in the game where you couldnt put the bridal on the unicorn (and its the last thing you do in the game). I think they have a patch on their website to fix that, so before you start, It'd be a good idea to get that.

Castles is a CLASSIC. Have you played Stronghold? It's like that. Very fun game where you build a castle and then defend it from assaults.

Pass on High Command, though. Average WWII Europe game.

Thanks for the input guys!

I picked up two more and might go back for three others, but would like some more advice. The first two games are the latest and the pictures of the paper are from inside the Loom game. It's kind of a neat news letter, I'll scan the Star Wars on Nintendo page once I get my scanner.

The other games are, two Leisure Suit Larry games and Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist. They are around $5 each, but they have been there for quite awhile so I should be able to get them cheaper.

the leasure suit larry's are AWSOME, freddy farckus, I never thought I would hear that name again. Its an excellent game, be careful buying that one though. Its one of those games you need the manual for software protection (what is word 3, paragraph 2, page 8). I still got mine but the disks are probably long gone.

where the hell are you getting this stuff from? I'd love to find these vintage sierra games in a store (and would buy them all in a heart beat).

I always liked Loom, but personally, I could never stand any King's Quest games. Any time I tried to play one of those, the first bizarre puzzle requiring some massive leap in logic I hit (ie. put silver in the sock and beat the werewolf over the head) made me just boot up something like Day of the Tentacle. At least all of those bizarre jumps in logic fit in the context of that game.

Well, the silver in the sock sort of works within the context of silver weapons defeating werewolves, but the sock weapon is a little out there. My big beef with the KQ games was that, later on, the games became all about helping little animals and crap and not about solving puzzles. Like KQV, it seemed like the whole game you went around doing things for rats and junk and then, just when you get captured, the rats come and untie your ropes or some junk like that. You could never kill the dragon with the dagger like you could in KQ1 - the dragon was just a poor misunderstood creature and yadda yadda yadda. You don't have to solve a puzzle to get out of your predicament, you just have to have helped someone who just happens to show up at just the right time - all the time. Then you had that dumb spell battle where you had to use the right spells in the right order - can anyone say "trial and error?"

Loom - along with almost all other Lucasarts adventures - has a lot less of that trial-and-error business largely because there's almost nothing in the game that kills you. This is quite different from Space Quest, for example, where just looking into a hole in a rock makes a crazy monster come out of it and rip your face off every time. Lucasarts rewarded you for trying new things - it didn't punish you like Sierra's usually did.

Castles is great, too...I liked the fantasy realm. I never built all 8 castles. Took too long.

< Has Loom as avatar, location, and custom status :D

I was a fan of the King's Quest, Quest for Glory, Lucas Point-N-Click adventures (Loom, Maniac Mansion, Sam & Max, etc.) as a kid and I loved all of them. Out of the KQ series, I believe that 4 & 6 were the best. 4 Required the manual for the "page 6, line 2, 6th word" protection. However, your box looks the same as mine did and my family never had a problem with the bridle.

Loom is kinda short and can easily be played in an afternoon. Make sure you have the manual for that with some sort of "red reader" to be able to play the game. I don't think the tape was necessary to listen to before playing the game...I remember it was kinda boring.

Depending on the version of Freddy Pharkas you've got (I had the CD Sierra Classics version) you may or may not have to put in the aforementioned "security protection" Leisure Suit Larry and Pharkas were created by the same guy so you'll find some similarities in the humor. Albeit Larry is more naughty than Pharkas. I personally didn't care for either one.

man, Loom reminds me of my three all time favorite point-n-clicks... Companions of Xanth, Veil of Darkness, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. if you ever see those three cheap, let me know I might pick em up off you if you don't enjoy their goodness yourself :D

Plus Freddy was ported to the Sega CD -- the game seems kind of rare, though. I've never seen one on EBay when I had the system and I'm not sure how it compares to the PC.

I also liked the sequel to Castles, Castles II: Siege and Conquest, a lot.

Sorry for pitching my ebay junk all the time, but:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11050&item=3072971764&ssPageName=STRK:MESSE:IT

That link is to Loom, and I also have Conquests of Camelot, Wizardry, and Ultima Underworld: Stygian Abyss up for auction. One day left. I've been seeing lots of positive comments on Loom, and since it's pretty uncommon, I may helping somebody out.

Here ends my greedy bastardness.

The second one is a Euro release or at least the back looks like it. It's like the Pal Dreamcast backs with the flags and all. Hey... for $3 it can't be that bad can it? LOL

Better make sure you patch up Pool of Radiance before playing it - wasn't there some sort of really bad bug in there that might crap up your hard drive or something? I can't remember.

And on Mission: Humanity...I think Hydrox was probably right about it sucking:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/missionhumanity/

I think the only thing that got less than that was possibly the Survivor PC game, and that might have even gotten a 3.

haha i knew that :) i'm quite good at recognizing shitty pc games just from the box/front, i guess it's because i've been playing pc games since i was six and have read thousands of reviews and played a few hundred pc games ;)

recognizing bad pc games is easier than bad console games :o

Ok, got back to the GW and they were finally closing out the old PC games. I picked up the following... whatcha' think. We discussed the LLL games already. I know some of these are pure junk, but I couldn't help myself. I'll post some pictures later.

The only down side is they really messed up the covers with pen and markers. :(

Leisure Suit Larry III w/ guide book $2.98

Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking For Love In Several Wrong Places $1.98

Shiloh: Grant's Trial In The West complete w/ map $1

Also, inside that box were these discs:

Disc 2 & 3 of Sorcerian

ZPC: No Flesh Shall Be Spared (new) $.99

Lexi Cross $1.98

Trial by Fire

You mean Quest for Glory 2? That game looks fun, but I could never get anywhere in it, stupid hallways. Oh well, the people that remade King's Quest 1&2 are remaking that too, and supposedly are making it easier to play. If you ever see a Space Quest game, however, pick it up IMMEDIATELY, those are THE best PC games ever made.

Trial by Fire

You mean Quest for Glory 2?
I've got it, too - that's the only Quest for Glory 2 there is! :D

Too bad the game crashes on configuration for me...I'll have to try that on another machine sometime.

Speaking of "the whole 1980s Sierra catalog," I found a sealed Police Quest a while back. Sealed. Whee.

Pool of Radience was a painful experience, not only for it's rife with bugs crashes every couple of minutes, crap. But also because it was painfully dull, filled with annoying random encounters (At this point, I have killed every drow in Menzoberazzan, and their long dead forebears) and sort of tedious. I stopped playing 14 hours in about 90% complete. And what did Wizards of the Coast do to follow up this PoS? They put out Temple of Elemental Evil, an even worse PoS.

SF - Fuck, I miss Baldur's gate, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter nights expansions

Oh, gawd Police Quest. You wanna talk about a game that has to get you to (a point) THINK like a cop. Man the first time I played that game I think you die if you don't walk around the car to check for problems (or you couldn't get in, I can't remember). One of those games where you save often as you may have missed something earlier on that kills you/forces you to restart later. PQ2 is another example of that: ya gotta sight your gun so that it shoots straight otherwise you DIE later on. Never gave it a thought the first few times.

Sierra adventures were neat but like Calthaer said-a LOT of trial and error that can serious test one's patience. Or as the years progressed you got adventures where you have no fargin' clue WHAT to do next like Phantasmagoria. A little nudging without the helper-dude would have been nice.

TheRedEye

Yeah, you have to check your car to make sure there's not a bomb. If you check, it's clear. If you don't check, a magical bomb appears.

I did a massive hack back when I was about 16 called Police Quest WaCkY. There were nice little touches like instantly dying if you ever looked at the ceiling, McDonaldland's Grimace as the fat guy in jail, a skinny male hooker dressed like Superman, and a time-travelling hat. When you partner up with Laura Watts later in the game, rather than changing into your "detective gear" or whatever, you put on a speedo and go solve crimes with her as BIKINI SQUAD. And instead of putting on your "civilian clothes" and taking your "civilian car" to the party, you put on your Batman outfit and drive the Batmobile to Arkham Asylum.

I really wish I'd kept that hack.
