Well, I'm a recent convert from PC Gaming ONLY to consoles. Except for a 2600 "back in the day", I've been anti-console - so I have no idea what games to get for my growing collection.
I have 2600, Colecovision, NES, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast.
I'm spending a "guys only" weekend with friends from high school (18 years ago) and will be bringing the 2600 and either the N64 or Dreamcast. I only have 2 controllers each for the N64 and Dreamcast, and I want to get 2 more - but I want some good four player action to go with it.
So, what's the best four player games for Dreamcast and N64? Which one should I buy the extra controllers for?

Dreamcast's Gauntlet Legends isn't bad, or Virtua Tennis, or any sports title
N64 ...erm....Mario Kart 64, Smash Bros.

N64: Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (you need the expansion pack for Perfect Dark)
SegaAges

Dreamcast: Sonic Shuffle (if you play with less than 4-players, nevermind that suggestion)
Power Stone 2
Worms (either one)
NBA Showtime (close enough to nba jam)
NFL Blitz
N64: Any Mario Party
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Super Smash Bros.

I have Virtua Tennis, and I played it last night 2 player co op with my fiance. We had a blast. I think that would be fun with 4 people...
I also have South Park Chef's Love Shack for the Dreamcast that looks like it could be fun with 4. So, I guess I will get two more DC controllers...
Come on, what other games are fun for 4 players? I like the look of Worms, I'll check EB for that one...

Starfox 64. I repeat, Starfox 64. The 4-player modes lasted my crew far, far longer than the 1-player game. We still throw it in. Crimson Skies reminds me alot of the Starfox play mechanics.

for the Dreamcast:
San Francisco Rush 2049. The racing mode is fun, and the stunt mode is good (for a while), but the Battle mode is great! Try sneaking up behind another player while they are targeting someone else, and you have the battering ram (which is the only weapon that can defend you against the homing missles!) Or, one of my favorite weapons, bouncing green cannon balls! Great for when you are trapped in a corner and someone is right behind you, just shoot your balls against the wall, and they will bounce back to destroy anyone close!

If one of your buddies has a snes to bring along, you HAVE TO get ahold of a Bomberman game and the 4-player adapter. You will seriously have the most 4-player fun in your entire life with any 2D Bomberman game.

Conker multiplayer is great on N64. Hmm what else besides what has been mentioned...?

I'm with Mayhem. Don't forget Conker's. I personally guarantee you that it will be loved.

My favorite four-player games have got to be WWF Wrestlefest (Arcade game only, unfortunately), Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Video Olympics.

Lessee...First, there's Warlords on the 2600, which is probably the first truly great 4-player game. Even though rounds become less interesting when your down to the last two players (that ball keeps bouncing the same directions), it's terrific.
How about Gauntlet? Pretty much any version that lets you play four at a time is great.
Of course, there's Mario Kart. How about the GBA version, which lets you play on the go? The SNES original was always the best (thanks to those tight racetracks), so how could you miss?
N64 has Goldeneye, obviously. The multiplayer modes for Conker's is terrific, too.
On the Dreamcast, there's Virtua Tennis, which is always fun, especially after a few beers; Chu Chu Rocket, truly great and truly maddening (it's great when everyone wants to pile it on one person); Test Drive Le Mans, which runs smoothly with four at a time; and the Rush 2049 Battle Mode, which is just about the most fun I've had with a console shooter (that's probably because I'd always win).
My favorite 4-player games? SF Rush, Mario Kart, Chu Chu Rocket, MULE, and Super Bomberman 2.

The PS2's Gauntlet Legends is only 2-player, but Gauntlet: Dark Legacy allows for four.
Has anyone played the 4-player Pac-Man game?
IMO 3+ player-games are only worthwhile if each player has their own screen. TVs just don't have sufficient size or resolution to really make it work well. Maybe check out some of the 2-4 player-games on GBA?

I prefer the games such as Virtua Tennis and NHL2K where all the players are on the same screen, as opposed to quadrants. It does get cramped if the screen is chopped into 4.

In theory, Yoshi's Cookie on the original Game Boy could be played with four players. As Yoshi's Cookie is a fairly nifty game, I imagine the four player game could be quite enjoyable. Alas, finding the appropriate conditions (four Game Boys, four cartridges, 4-player adatper, cables) would probably be difficult.
