This weekend's feature column marks the debut of not only the column itself but of the new line-up of columns for 2004.
alt.not.gaming (http://www.digitpress.com/columns/altnotgaming.htm)
If the title sounds familiar, it shouldn't. In fact, nothing about Kris "Queen of the Felines" Roper's new feature column should seem familiar. alt.not.gaming is all about changing the game, breaking the rules, and finding new ways to play old favorites. You may just find that these games are MORE fun when you try some of the techniques our resident bad girl has in store for them. The column debuts today, check it out right HERE (http://www.digitpress.com/columns/altnotgaming.htm).
Feedback is always appreciated!
Enjoy.

Kristine, that rules! I've always had fun with Adventure... now, my fervor for the quest of the chalice has been renewed! I'm gonna try the "Big Swallow" quest now... LOL LOL LOL
I await the next installment! Patiently, that is. I can have lots of fun with this for now... :D

"When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled! Yes, Brave Sir Robin turned about and gallantly he chickened out! Brave, brave, brave, braaaaaave Sir Robin!"

CASTLEVANIA! CASTLEVANIA!!! :above me: ROFL
Eh, what else were you going to expect? If you're looking for something a bit more vintage than that, I'm suggesting Mountain King for some reason.

and while you're at it, someone can explain the point of Mountain King as well. Had it for a week, promptly sold it. Seemed like a maze game that went one way with no enemies :hmm:

The point was lost on me too at first, but I'll PM you for advice if ya want it... ;)
I should try "The Seizure," see if I can actually get one. I'm usually prone to them...

Try Pitfall or River Raid for the next game QoF.

I think that the more open-ended the game is, the greater that possibilities of creating sub-games like you have with Adventure. Your column reminds me so much of the way my dad would play videogames with me. The first thing he'd do would be exactly the thing you were not supposed to do, like turn the car around off of the starting line and go the wrong way.
The possibilities for a game like Vice City are mind-boggling.
If you want to stay on the classic route (which I think would appeal most to DP visitors), how about Intellivision Truckin' (where you CAN drive anywhere), 2600 Superman, Wing War on ColecoVision, Pirates! on NES... all games that have no specific immediate objective.
I must have missed this thread! I just noticed that Kristine's sig was clickable and checked it out. Great stuff! I've tried a few of those before, but there were some new interesting ones. I'm still not sure I get the title: "alt.not.gaming" It's still gaming isn't it?

It's about GAMING in a way that's NOT intended. An ALTernate way, you might say. :)

You might also say that it's an ALTernative to NOT GAMING.

That article is awesome, what else can I say?
I'd like to see what QoF could come up with for the original Legend of Zelda, but I suppose most of that's been done already.

Very cool. There is art in breaking a game.
Also, I am psyched that there is a picture of a Rhindle rampant in the article, as I am going to make that my emblem in Steel Battalion: Line of Contact, and I was hoping to come across a screenshot sooner or later.
Is it really possible to trap Yorkle in the Gold Castle, given his aversion to the Gold Key?

The second 2004 installment of alt.not.gaming is, well.... installed, as of today. Topic: Metroid. You'll love Kristine's methods for making the game all kinds of different after so many years.
Check it out.

Really nice! In my opinion, this edition is better than the last because it's goes along better with its proclaimed "naughty" theme. I enjoyed the link to the password generator, and especially liked the example passwords.

More alternative gaming goodness as our weekly feature column schedule continues.
The third 2004 installment of alt.not.gaming is online as of today. You might think playing through a game like Final Fantasy X pretty much happens once, but Kristine has some ways that might make revisiting the old game fun.
Have a look.

I have yet to even play it the first time through, I may have to try this to mix it up/make it harder.
