His heart was in the right place, I don't think he deserved to be painted in the same sense as Lieberman, not that I'm accusing any article of making him out to be like that.

I've seen the Night Trap and Mortal Kombat issue as one of proposed censorship across the board, (that is, something that would have affected access and purchase for more mature audiences) something I'm against, but agree that it wasn't something a 12 year old had any business playing. Mr. Keeshan's perspective was broader in the sense that he didn't like how children's entertainment was devolving as a whole, and for the most part he's correct. Alot of it is braindead tripe with little intellectual merit.

Freaky. I was just watching an episode of I Love the 70's where they touched on Captain Kangaroo. I had no clue the show started in the 50's. I remember it, but not sure how good it was.

I can understand his stance on games as Mortal Kombat and the like were getting a lot of publicity and video games were still seen as toys in the eyes of the public. I hold no ill towards his past views and he shouldn't be lumped in the same pile as Lieberman who either is ignorant or out and out lied about the content of the games he ranted about.

I was wondering when someone would mention this! I considered bringing it up in the Off-Topic thread about Keeshan but I figured I'd be run out of town on a rail for it.

Righto. And at least he was just expressing his opinion as opposed to threatening to initiate legislation to back it up.

I'm very saddened to hear about the passing of the Captain. I grew up on his show, and always loved it (remember Bill Cosby's "Picture Pages?").

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here, and maybe it's just my own age creeping up on me (as well as three sisters aged 8-12), but I think Bob Keeshan was right. To a certain extent, at least. I would, however, go beyond blaming violent videogames (something of a straw man) and ask questions about America's obsession with violence. This is a country driven by violence and fear and conflict. It's something that is deep in the psyche of the American mind, and you see it manifested in our pop culture (TV, movies, games), as well as exported across the world. Remember Iraq? Anyone remember just why we started dropping bombs over there?

I don't mean to turn this into a political debate, but I think we do need to examine just why we (as Americans) define ourselves in terms of violence. I don't believe this is healthy, and I don't believe it is necessary. In that respect, I think Mr. Keeshan got it right.

His heart was definatley in the right place, he has his own opinions. Lieberman is the devil, not captain K.

I also grew up on Captain Kangaroo and have nothing but respect for him. He obviously cared for children and only had their welfare at heart. I loved his show and found it well-done and also quite funny at times. The first time my parents found me drawing something, they realized I was trying to draw Tom Terrific, a character in a cartoon that happened to be shown on that show.

It is sad to see CK die. I wasn't into him but apparently a lot of people loved his brand of entertainment. I believe that kids should not be playing ultra violent videogames-alone anyway. I played Mortal Kombat and Doom II when i was a kid but I knew that it was fantasy and I knew that killing is not a proper behavior. Not every kid does apparently. Anyway, I believe that CK's heart was in the right place but he was def. speaking out of place. From the info in this thread, he clearly did not know what he was talking about. A man with even a shred of power that can influence others is dangerous when he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Same w/ Lieberman. What a fucking hypocrite Lieberman is anyway. He presents himself as a man of morals. I want to know what's worst- Playing a violent videogame or Cheating on your wife, getting blown in the oval office, and then lying to the American people about it. I didn't see Senator Morals calling for Clinton’s impeachment. Anyway, back to Ck, I dig his message but I feel that one should shut their mouth when they are totally off target as to what they are for or against. RIP Kangaroo man, I hope for your sake heaven isn't filled with arcade machines (although it should be).

MODS:

This is yet another post that is strongly tempting me to go political. I realize that, especially lately, there's been an apparent tendency for every thread on the boards to at some point morph into a political debate, and I'm exercising all of my self-restraint to not begin a serious rant here.

But I had an idea I wanted to float.

Many of you and forum members at large are really tired of political discussion on this videogame messageboard, which is perfectly understandable. I've been seing threads locked the moment they enter pro-Bush/anti-Bush territory; again, understandable.

But obviously some of us do want to discuss this sort of thing.

I haven't thought this through, so feel free to just say no, but maybe we could/should have a politics forum? Then, when things veer this way the topic could just be moved.

I assume there are actual politically-oriented forums online, but for whatever reason there's a bunch of us here that want that sort of discussion, and we don't feel like schlepping our typing fingers over to some other, less cozy, online home.

Just an idea.

Steve
(who, btw, has a 'Clinton was actually a good president, Bush is the most dangerous man alive, clearly half our country is crazy or ignorant or something' rant just dying to get out....)

Steve, we tried it. First there was the miserable failure that was the War Room (the stickied thread in Off Topic). Then we tried restricting such posts to the Battlezone. People just can't exercise the restraint necessary to keep such topics as discussions rather than personal attacks and flame wars once politics become involved. And, as you pointed out, this IS a gaming forum/community, and there are many other outlets that can be taken advantage of elsewhere on the internet.
