View Full Version : Do you really play your classic systems?

Or do you just collect them and get the game ROMs for emulation? I personally just buy the hardware for my collection and download and play the games through emulation on my X-Box.

Bleah. I hate emulation. I only play games on it to decide if I want to buy em. As for playing my systems...that's why I own em!

I usually play all my classic games, except when i donīt have any emotion to connect the system and the box, and to search the carts...etc, so i play roms

The emu on my Xbox is heavily underutilized.

Of course I play them.. always have for the past 20 years. But then again, now.. I'll admit it's far more convenient to play them via emu's on the Xbox.. so a lot of stuff has remained stored away for a while (snes, genny, 2600, etc.) However, of course if I'm hankering for a game of Kaboom or similar, out comes the hardware. It's a happy medium more or less.

I rotate through my old systems, but I definitely play them. Emulation is good for stuff like the C64 and the Atari 8-bit.. where disks are involved, but otherwise, I've always got something old to play. There's always an Intellivision, Atari and something else out.

I couldn't imagine having all those systems hooked up. I only have the GameCube, X-Box and PS2 hooked up and all the others stored away.

I don't really play my games, or any games through emulation. I am more a collector of classic games. I mainly stick to newer games when I do play, but lately I have not played much of anything.

I'd play my 2600/5200 more if I could hook straight up to my normal TV (and if the 5200 wasn't so big). My NES/SNES/Gen all get average usage though. Screw emus if I have the cart :D

Don't let those old rusty disks slow you down. With a sio2pc cable for the Atari and a PC1541 cable for your C64 you have access to every game ever released which you can easily run on the real hardware :D

I think it depends on the system, most systems I prefer the real thing. But I play a lot of games on the spur of the moment based on a forum discussion or a review and then it's a lot easier to play it in an emulator because I don't have all 20 of my systems hooked up at the same time.

Exactly. Nothing beats the feeling of inserting a physical game (especially a cart!) into an actual system and playing it as it was meant to be played. IMO, the actual controller is part of the experience as well, so playing saying NES ROMS on a DC controller would be so, soooo wrong.

I'd play me NES if I could get the damn thing working and my Atari if I didn't have the same issue Port mentioned in his post.

my coleco's been getting HEAVY useage lately thanks to space invaders collection, and I play atari about once a week so I hit 'yes'.

Last thing I emulated was Tattoo Assassins, since I have pretty much no shot of ever playing the real PCB

I don't play my old systems often, but I'm actually taking a short break right nwo from playing Star Fire on my 2600 jr. as I write thsi reply.

I WILL BE A MEMBER of the Star Fire Elite Squadron. I just need to break 3500 points, and so far I've hit about 2300. But it's happening, tonight.

I think I'll put on some Rush, that shoudl help get the juices flowing....

I play all my systems. I would have to say I play my nintendo 64 the least right now, but still get use out of it now and then. I will defiantely go back to playing it all the time. I usually play gamecube the most, right now anyways.

I buy carts for my NES, SNES, and Genesis only if I can find them for cheap. Otherwise, I rotate between Dreamcast, N64, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PS2, and Xbox. I started playing again in '99 because of the next-gens, and I prefer playing retro collections on those newer systems to having to plug in the others. I haven't learned how to emulate on my DC, PC, or XB yet...

Of course I do. I love picking up an NES controller, or popping in a TG hu card...I tried emulation on the DC, although the games weren't bad, it didn't have the fell. you need the original controllers and such to get the full effect in my opinon.

I've got a ton of old school systems, and I play them all the damn time. I have a NES, Saturn and a Atari 2600 hooked up to a 27 inch RGB monitor in my Master Bedroom. I have the SNES, Genny, PS1, Cube and XBOX hooked up to my big screen TV in the living room. I have a Dreamcast and a 3DO hooked up to my TV in the computer room. I have a 32X, Sega CD, Genny unit currently hooked up to my little RGB monitor in my computer room.

Right now, my Jaguar & N64 are in the garage. But they get rotated in on a regular basis.

But, I must say that I've just started to try to get back into Emulators and Roms. Right now, it's mostly an experiment. But if I can get to the point where I don't really feel like I'm playing a emulator, and it "feels right", then I might put alot of my systems away. I'm in the process of getting a N64 controller for my PC. I'm also going to get a NES, SNES and Genny controller altered to work on my PC. And a PS2 controller to work with PS1 games. So I'm looking in to making emulation a much bigger part of my program, but right now, emulation is nowhere near the "Real McCoy" as far as I'm concerned. There may be a time when I go nearly 100 percent Emu and Rom. But that time is not now.

Man, if my sentiment were a nail... you hit it right on the head with a sledgehammer!

And like maxlords said... emulation is an awesome tool for finding stuff that you're going to like.

In my opinion, why own a toy if you're not going to play with it? But then again, it's kind of biased. Check out my website link in my sig. That is my game collection... I'm not in the same boat as a lot of people here who have a bazillion systems. I only have two to hook up... TG-16 and PCE-Duo.

Of course I play them (on the real thing of course). I've got my NES, Atari 7800, Genesis, and PSX hooked up to the TV in my room (with the 2600, 800XL, SMS standing by). My PS2, GCN, SNES, and N64 are hooked up to the TV in the family room.

I have nes snes genesis dreamcast n64 playstation xbox and gamecube. I have emulation on my xbox. But, I only play the roms if I dont have the actual game. Nothing like playing contra for nes with the original controllers.

It's actually kind of funny. I go through cycles with all of my systems. I'll play a bunch of games on one system, then switch to another and so on. I recently went through an N64 cycle to Atari 2600 to Dreamcast. I found Iron Soldier 3 and Robotron X (Which I know is supposed to be bad, but I loved Robotron 64 and for a couple bucks...) so I know the next cycle to start will be Playstation.

My Jaguar has been calling to me lately too. If I had an easy way to hook it up to my monitor at home, I'd be playing that a lot.

Lastly, if I have collected it, I'm going to play it. I have a complete Sega Dreamcast US collection, and I keep a log of which games I've played and beat and so on. I have yet to come accross anything that I truly hate. I did the same thing with my Jaguar collection :)

I have, for the past 4 months reconstructed my room of doom to have two TVs with twenty five systems connected between the two of them. They are all continuously hooked up, via super sysytem selctors, gold splitters, and surge protectors. On one TV I have: Atari 2600, 5200, Jaguar, XEGS, Odyssey 2, Commodore Vic 20, 64, TI-99 4A, TRS-80, INTV, Coleco, Astrocade, Turbo Grafx, 3D0, Nes, SNES, N64, and my beloved Neo Geo AES.
On my other TV(labeled the Sega Setup), I have the SMS, SCD, Genesis, 32X, Saturn and DC. I play them every day, does this count??? :D

I voted yes. I dont have that many classic systems, but I still play them. The Snes, Nes, I play them every now and then. Probably more if I had more games for them :D Especially the Nes.

95% of my gaming occurs on pre-playstation systems. As far as I'm concerned, emulation is a tool, not a replacement. I'm living out my childhood dream (of having a massive library of nes games) and loving every minute of it.

I play all of my systems except my NES which I can't get to work at all anymore. I have to try and get a new connector. For NES, I use Emulation. Everything else, I just have to play the real thing.

Oh, you bet I do! Just two days ago, I was having an intense Space Harrier II session... and I emerged victorious. :D

But I've been focusing more on my modern consoles lately, particularly my PS2 for Guilty Gear XX. That doesn't mean I don't shun my vintage consoles. I've been thinking about building my NES and Genesis collection soon...

I do from time to time but since I can't hook up anything without an av on the tv I use the most then I can't play them that much because the tv where they can be hooked up is where my parents watch tv in the morning and at night.

I always play my Vectrex and especially my NES, but my GC and PS2 get the most play time.
Now that I finally got a top loader though, I have been playing my NES a ton.

Oh heck, yes. I go in cycles.. Playing one system for long periods of time, occasionally switching to others. My Colecovision was the only system I had hooked up for.. oh, a year and a half, maybe? When I used to have a Vectrex where I lived, that, too, was played frequently.

at least 1 Sega Master System is hooked up to my TV ready to satisfy at a moments notice.

Currently, both my SMS-1 and my Mark III are hooked up.

I don't have them ALL hooked up, they go "in rotation". For example, I've got my Genesis/Sega CD combo and my ColecoVision hooked up at the moment. The 2600 gets some duty, and the SNES with Super 8 for NES playing gets a lot of use too.

So I guess my answer is yeah.

All my systems, with the exception of the monstrosity that is the Sega Genesis/CD/32X combo, are hooked up and ready to go. I put a lot of time into the new generation of systems, but the old NES gets it's fair share of play. The Atari might see use every few months, usually when I get the desire for some Synthcart goodness, or perhaps some authentic Megamania action. The Atari doesn't get a lot of use due to the fact that I don't have anywhere to set the Atari close to me since the cords are so damn short. :)

All systems have a game in them at all times, ready to fire up and go.

How could I forget...

I've also got a Panasonic FZ-1 3DO hooked up to my computer's TV card! I've been using that for the book research on that section (3DO has some crazy imports, by the way). It's a little weird playing a game system through a TV card on your PC monitor but it works, and I often find myself glued to games that I only wanted a quick refresher on (ex: 3DO Road Rash) :)

I play my older systems frequently, and I tend to rotate which ones I am playing at the moment.

That said, my Atari 2600 and Sega Master System have been packed away for a good long time.

of course i do, i don't have them all hooked up at once though as i don't have a special gaming room

current consoles, dreamcast, super nintendo and n64 :o are always hooked up, the remaining place is for rotation of all other systems, i'm considering hooking up my MD+32X instead of my n64 though as it's quite a lot of work to build it up every time i want to play...

I'm paring down what stuff I own but on occasion I'll drag out the NES or turn on my Frogger tabletop.

Currently I have my Xbox, Animal Cube..er Gamecube (You could glue the lid shut with Animal Crossing in there and my wife wouldn't mind one bit), P...pl..playstation (anyone who knows me knows my distaste for PS1 but right now Strider 2 and Tempest X3 own me) and soon the Bust-A-Move 2...er Saturn will be getting hooked up. NES sits in cabinet for easy hookup to the VCR and I still have a computer/TV switch attached if I want to play some Atari 2600.

As for emulation-the only thing that really gets touched is MESS for CoCo emulation or Virtual PC to play some old DOS games. Everything else sits.

I bought.. er.. re-bought a PSX just to play Bubble Bobble again.

That was, oh, a month ago. Now I have 67 games (http://jasoco.no-ip.com/gamelist.php?sys=psx).

And Bubble Bobble STILL rocks when played in original Arcade form. (Why the bastards touched up the graphics on Rainbow Islands on that disc, but not Bubble Bobble makes me so mad.)

My SFC is hooked up and good to go all the time and when I travel I almost always take my Nomad and a variety of games and rechargable batteries.

Jasoco

I wish there was a way to plug Master System games in a Nomad. Like the Power Gear Converter works, but for the Nomad.

A cross between the portability of the Power Gear Converter and the convenience of the Power Base Converter.

If it is technically possible, it should have been done by now.

I sold all my classic systems, as they took up too much space for the little time I spent with them hooked up. Seriously, it's so much easier to play a 2600 or Colecovision rom then to hook the stuff up..and to have it hooked up for only a few days or whatever.

it's nice to just play a quick game through an emu...especially considering that most of the 2600's games actually do really suck-o-la!

I have all the classic emus and a lot of roms, but I hardly ever play through all them, but it's nice to go back through them once and awhile...but not worth it to actually purchase all those carts and systems.

Kind of the same with MAME. None of us actually own all those arcade games, and most of us wouldn't want to because of the cost and space they would take up. Sure, it's nice to play Pole Position II or Missile Command once in awhile, but who would want all those old arcade games in their house...well, I would if I had a mansion..but that beside the point!!!

I voted yes. I love playing on the old systems but emulators can work in a pinch or whatnot. It's gotta be the real controller to have the same feeling.
