View Full Version : What Are Your THREE Greatest Finds in the Wild?

OK - eBay does NOT count, as it's technically not "the wild".
I'm talking game stores, thrift stores, garage sales, friends, whatever else...
Here's mine (although they have all been sold - sniff, sniff):
1. NES console test cartridge (perfect label) $3.00
2. MINT, complete Q*Bert's Qubes for 2600 (so choice) $2.99
3. StarFox Super Weekend Competition cart for SNES (really good condition) $9.99
Try to limit them to three, unless you just have a couple of more amazing finds that warrant a story.
Carry on...

Well, mine aren't that great, but they're still pretty good.
1. Turbografx 16 with Turbografx CD, case, 4 complete CD games, 12 complete card games, and 1 card-only game----$40
2. FFVI and FFIV (American releases, cart only)----$2.99 apiece
3. Don't have a 3rd that is non-eBay. But if I could... well, let's just say "CD-i with 35 games, 2 of which were in-store demo copies, for only $25".

1. complete Mickey Mouse Game & Watch (the juggling circus one) $15
2. Super Cross Force (coleco) $2
3. Many of the Fox Atari 2600 games including Porky's, Crypts of Chaos, Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes given to me by a friend a few years ago.
Sega Hitman

1.) Loose Tooth Protectors--$10
2.) Vectrex w/ 5 or 6 games (as well as 10 very common 2600 games)--$15
3.) Box of old PC games which included Maniac Mansion (sold for $71 on ebay), and 5 Ultima games (sold for between $25-$50)---$15
And since half the state of Michigan visits the DP board, I just thought I'd mention that #1 and #3 there were found at everybody's favorite trash pit, Dixieland Flea Market. Just thought I'd rub it in, since I haven't heard positive things about Dixieland from other members here.

not the best finds but it's very very hard to find ANYTHING in the wild in germany :(

Perhaps not all that impressive, but:
1) Jaguar Catbox, bought brand new for $60 (CDN) or so when it came out. I still have the "box" it came in and manuals and all... although I seem to have lost the terminator that came with it.
2) Vectrex with Hyperchase, $40 (What was more impressive was the fact that I got it from a booth in a flea market that notoriously overprices everything... Genesis sports games for $25 and all). Aside from a missing rubber foot, a rather abused controller, and the standard buzzing, it's in very good condition.
3) SNES Chrono Trigger, $10 from a local pawn shop

ORANGEST! I, too, got my sealed Caltron from you. I actually think you supplied a majority of the Caltron out in circulation, if not all the sealed ones... hehe.
My top 5:
- Sealed 2600 Glib for $2 at a thrift
- loose Game Action Replay for $5
- and the big load of about 100 sealed games + from my local Funco. 4 sealed original Zelda 2s, one sealed Skate or Die, about 30-50 sealed contras, 20 sealed QBerts, 5 sealed Friday the 13ths, 5 sealed Athletic Worlds, 10 Xeviouses, 20 Magmaxes, and 20 Gyrusses. Cost me $700, but quite the amount of theoritcal pants shitting when I walked into the store that day.

Were those NES games recent? A few local GameStops got in a bunch of new/sealed NES and Geni games within the last two years that I was floored by. Not nearly that much, but I picked up some nice stuff there...
My top three wild finds would be:
- Ms. Pac-Man upright w/ socketed EEPROM - Free
- Star Fox Competition Cart - $5.00, mint
- Bad Dudes upright (supposedly "non-working" apparently needed to be "plugged in") - $5.00
My top eBay find was:
- SNES Dev system, Geni Dev system, two more Geni's (regular), Saturn, PSX and SNES along with a bunch of controllers and Chrono Trigger for the SNES, mint... $50.00 shipped
8-)
I love the thrill of the hunt!

it's pretty funny thinking that i could have somehow affected the caltron rarity curve all by myself. nice to know so many ended up in the right hands... ;)
i also found a shrinkwrapped and a loose caltron, seperate from that big find, at the same flea market years apart. the shrinkwrapped one was one of the first nes games i bought once i started collecting for nes. that one set me back a whole $5. i only wish i had panesian magnetism like that...
all you people out there with myriads, you're welcome. LOL i've yet to come close to seeing one of those...
oh, and all i have left is one complete copy in my own collection. the big find happened years and years ago and have all since been sold/traded away...

1.) Ryuuko No Ken 2/Art of fighting 2(complete) for SFC

2.) Dezeamnon 3D (complete;mint) for N64
A few weeks ago I typed "dezeamon " in ebay.de-search and bingo there it was. I paid 35 euros but it' worth it cause it's very hard to find nowadays.
3.) Tee-V golf thingy (new) for SNES
5 euros shipped. I get it in a few days.I think that's some kind of controller for PGA golf game.anyways....I never saw one before.

Some people here had real nice finds @_@ , to bad here in holland we are mostly not that lucky. My finds in the wild in 15 months collecting;
1) Sega Saturn with 17 games and Sega lightgun + Lunar II Eternal Blue for the SegaCD + Commodore C128, all this for free. Counterpart of the deal was that i had to transport this all by myself by train (The package's where large and the C128 psu's where heavy!!)
2) Playstation display with light (dunno how you guys name it, see link :) -> *click* (http://members.home.nl/terpelle/pics/DCP_3347%20(Small).JPG) ) Got that one for free to from a gameshop, real cool. Also transported this 1.20 meter item by train (i must be crazy :P )
3) Super Metroid in the large box with strategy guide for 20 euro's near mint state, maybe not such an impressive item but i like the game and the big box looks very cool.

I haven't gotten a whole lot in the wild other than NES, SNES, and Genesis games, so I'm afraid I don't have 3 good finds. But I do have two... I dunno if one of them counts tho.
#1) Tetris by Tengen cart at Gamestop for $5. Not incredible I know, but it was kinda cool to find.
#2) Brand new never opened Top Loading NES for $40. This would be a little cooler if it wasn't for the fact that I bought it at KB Toys 10 years ago. Heh... I guess I was one of those few people who actually bought the thing when it was released.

Hmm .... my "in the wild" finds are not especially impressive. I got Night Trap and Corpse Killer for the PAL CD 32X for £3 each in Gamestation, worth £50 and £25 respectively. I nearly choked when I saw them, because I couldn't believe they didn't know how much they were worth!
Picked up mint complete Illusion of Time and Legend of Mana for £2 each in a charity shop.
After that I don't really know what my next best is, cause there's not much else that's much good. Just a mass of 'fairly good' deals, but nothing astounding.

#1 ) I found a loose copy of Tooth Protectors for the 2600 in a lot of 12 Atari games that I bought from a friend for $10. Not too bad. I later traded this to a member of this board, since I don't collect Atari.
#2 ) A loose copy of Tengen Tetris for $7 at Babbages. Not too impressive, though I was a bit surprised when I saw it lying in the bin.
#3 ) Complete copies of Mermaids of Atlantis, Krazy Kreatures, and Venice Beach Volleyball for around $15 at Babbages. Once again, not too impressive, but very nice indeed.

I couldnt believe all of those finds. I havent had a good find in a while though :(

1) Just last week: loose Crash 'n the Boys Street Challenge for NES (an R5!) for $4. Very good game, by the way, if you haven't played it.
2) Quite some time ago: John Madden '92 Championship Edition (the limited rental-only edition), thrown in free with a couple other Genesis games because it counts as an "old sports game". I sold it a while back, though...sorry.
3) Last summer: Working Lynx 2 in decent shape, with California Games, for $3 at the flea market. (And that price includes a loose Genesis copy of Mortal Kombat 3 as well!)
And I'm still waiting on a friend at work to give me a figure on her husband's 2600 with (she says) around 30 games. If it's reasonable (say, under or around $100) I'll probably jump.

The whole lot cost me $35

i never seem to have any luck in the wild. i've only got one noteworthy find that comes to mind, but its for a bunch of games. i found out that a friend of mine was the son of a famous video game journalist, of course i asked about prototypes because i was really into collecting them at the time. after a couple of months he dug out some boxes of games and told me that he had 2 nes protos. i finally talked him into selling them to me after many months. i go over to his house to pick up the protos and he tells me "they're somewhere in that box" and it's a huge box of production nes games but i wasn't at all interested in them because i was so excited about the protos. i start digging through it and about 10 minutes later i've got 16 nes prototypes in a pile next to me. i can't remember the last time i was this excited as i kept pulling them out of the box. then he goes and gets some more boxes of snes, genesis, and gameboy games. i dug through those boxes and found a few protos for each of those systems. i left with every proto that i found there. it costed me a lot, but i got to meet this video game journalist and i thought that was almost as cool as the find itself. :)

It was hard to narrow it down to 3 things...
1) Gauntlet Legends (DC) new for .99 at K-Mart
2) Phantasy Star Online new (DC) for .99 at Sears
3) small SNES and NES toaster with controllers and AVs sans AC adapters for $6.00 total - "parasited" at Gamestop
3 best freebies I acquired at my retail jobs:
1) Broken kiosk Dreamcast system

I should have never let that Halo stand-up go into the trash. Stupid immature fanboyism! <josekortez slaps self> Never again!

Nothing truly otherworldly, but I've stumbled across a couple of nice bundles in the past:
1) 'Limited Edition' Gamegear/TV Tuner/Columns package, mint & boxed with powerpack, battery pack, screen magnifier and 16 boxed & complete games - £3
2) Woody six-switch VCS with 4 sticks, 2 paddles & 20 loose carts - £2

#3-My Top-Loader for $20 at local music store
#2-Chrono Trigger(snes) & Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (DC) $10 for both at local pawn shop
#1- My grandaddy find.....Color Bar Generator mint with original instructions and original plain cardboard box at my local Goodwill store.......$0.50. But I weighed out my options and decided that it wasn't much of a "game" (which it isnt) But since it came up as a 10 on the scale, off to the auction block it went...for $348 :D .
That cash financed my minty Duo and new DC. It was worth it to me. :D

1. Final Fantasy Tactics (non-GH) sealed - $2.99 at Goodwill in Austin last year on my birthday. Mixed with the audio CD's.
2. Mythicon Star Fox for 2600 - free at Salvation Army. The guy at the counter saw the stains on the label and told me not to worry about paying. Works fine.
3. Sega Master System with 3D glasses/adapter, 12 complete games, 2 controllers, and all cables - $9.99 at Savers. It was in perfect shape for not being boxed; still had the protective plastic cover on the shiny part of the console and controllers. It's in better shape than the one that I've owned since 1986.

off the top of my head...
-a box filled with 17 caltron 6 in 1s: 15 shrinkwrapped, 1 complete, 1 loose. $30 at a thrift.
ORANGEST! I, too, got my sealed Caltron from you. I actually think you supplied a majority of the Caltron out in circulation, if not all the sealed ones... hehe.
My top 5:
- Sealed 2600 Glib for $2 at a thrift
- loose Game Action Replay for $5
I'm drooling just looking at that stack! (Except for the gyrusses and magmaxes) Did you sell these on ebay? I saw the same seller selling alot of these 2 games, I did bid on some but lost all I think 3-4 times. :D

Hmmm...
1) Loose 2600 Q*Bert's Qubes with a bunch of commons, all of which I bought for $8 in '98
2) CIB Tengen Tetris from a video store that was closing down for $6 in '98.
3) Gradius II (box, no manual), Holy Diver (CIB) and a Honeybee converter for $20 from a local game store in '94
4) Alien Soldier (Japanese CIB) for $40 from a visitor to the OPCFG in '00.
5) Megapanel (Mega Drive - CIB) free in '99.
The first two I no longer have - Q'sQs went to a good home (to a RR member, actually), and Tetris I traded in for about $80 in store credit at a local game store.
