View Full Version : Who will you initially support in the NEXT console war?
Hello people-
With all the PS3, Xbox 2, and the next Nintendo rumors circulating around the net I was wondering which system you will support or initially support. I say initially b/c I suspect that if you're like me you will probably end up buying all of the next gen systems eventually. If rumors are true all 3 systems will luanch around the same time. If that does happen, and say there are games that appeal to you on each system, whos it going to be, who will you support? Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are all faceless corporations. I am not happy supporting rich guys that could give 2 shits about me or my fellow gamers. But I am addicted to gaming. I think I would put my money down for the big N initially. I am not down with any corporations but I feel that at least the big N is a "real" game company and consistenly brings out appealling software. I would then throw support to Microsoft and lastly to Sony. I am so afraid that Sony will dominate the market again. It is getting tired. They stole the soul of gaming as far as im concerned. I have supported them but have always adopted later on. I bought a PS at the end of 96 and a PS2 the first half of 02. This all could change by launch time. They are just my feelings at this time. Tell me yours!

I like Nintendo, since they DO seem to care about making the best game system, but Sony will probably win the next console war because they have Square-Enix on their side. If S-E could be wooed away from them by Nintendo I have no doubt that Nintendo will reign again. XBOX 2 will probably end up a niche console like the current XBOX is, whetever Gameboy comes next will win the portable console war, because Game Boy can beat anything (Look at Game Gear, Lynx, and Nomad. Even the great Squaresoft couldn't help Wonderswan win that console war.)

Well, I got a GCN at launch, an Xbox on my birthday last year (June 30th) and a PS2 October last year. Wow, I screwed that up. Yes, I LOVE my GCN... but my Xbox has gotten VERY little use. My PS2 has gotten hundreds of hours into it so far. I will buy whatever the new Nintendo console is at launch, no doubt. And I will buy the PS3 at launch (Unless if it is $300). But the next 'Box? No. I will get it once the next-next generation comes around. Well, I guess I would buy it if it had a must-have game, but otherwise, I won't waste too much money on one. So, in short, I will support Nintendo, although I know they will not do as good as they could, and later Sony, because I love the PS2 so much.

It all depends on the games. If Nintendo brings out a true Mario game, I'll probably go with it first. OTOH, if the PS3 has a strong RPG at launch (Suikoden V, Final Fantasy XII, etc.) I'll probably got for it first instead. If neither system has a "must own", then the Xbox 2 has a chance of sneaking in there if the lineup is right.

If the generes (for the most part) stay the same Ninetndo. I love those platform Mario and friend games.
It would be awsome if Nintendo released a brand new Mario Kart with the next system. :-P

In all honestly, at this point I'm most interested in who has the strongest online component. That's where I'm doing more and more of my gaming lately...

Yea. If Nintendo doesn't jump on the bandwagon of online gaming they are screwed! :o

I won't "support" any of them. I'll buy the good games for each system, but as for going out on a limb, buying cool accessories and whatnot, and even buying the LE consoles --- that quit the day I heard Dreamcast support went South. I actually just made a post about this on another board, oddly enough. Strange.

That is a great question and the first 4 replys I read are pretty much exactly what I am thinking!
I will be there on launch day for NINTENDO!!! NOT xbox 2 or ps3!
In my opinion Nintendo puts out the BEST overall quality games. I mean anybody can put out a game like vice city. Let's see go around and shoot people and steal things, ooh and shoot more people. Rosckstar did a good job at the game, and have nothing against these kind of games, NOTHING ORIGINAL THOUGH, and defiantley not fun for me, PEOPLE they come a dime a dozen!!
Now games like Metriod, Mario, and Zelda just to name a few are 100 time better games, but vice city still sells more. I guess it just shows what kind of gamers are out there?
It's just in my opinion Nintendo is #1!! Of course I own a gamecube, and am not concerned with the next system having interenet capabiltiy, or if they start putting out more violent games. I could give a shit!! But it would be smart of Nintendo to do the online thing. I also, as someone else stated, don't like one company like sony to gain all of the market. It's like fools just mindlessly go buy ps2 things, just cause it's sony. I say fools because it's like they don't even give a second thought to buying Nintendo, becuase that system is for kids?
Give me Sonic, Metroid, Link, and Mario ANYDAY!!!
Just one man's opinion. :D

I'm not overly interested in the next generation, because I don't think the machines will really be all that impressive (considering the technology jumps between previous generations, I'm predicting the least impressive generation gap yet).
However, I'll likely be rooting for Nintendo. They're the last "real" video game company left. Microsoft and Sony are still "outsiders" in my opinion.

I'll probably go with Sony. Sure, they've got crap that you have to wade through but in the long run, but the selection that I've got to choose from is huge. My PS systems consistantly get more hours of play time than my Xbox and cube combined.
I want 3rd party support, I want 1st party support, I want games on a consistant basis; I WANT CHOICE. I don't want to wait months until a great game comes out. I want a company that is willing to whore itself out to developers. And that my friends, is Sony.
Sony has 'clones' of games that are on Nintendo along with the titles that Nintendo doesn't seem to want on their systems. (i.e. Mario Kar = Crash Nitro Kart [if I was so inclined], Mario or Sonic 3D Adventures = Jak, etc.)

I'll be the odd man out. I'm going with Microsoft first. Just like the current generation, they'll probably have the best of the multiplatform releases (except in EA's case), a strong online component, a slick hardware setup, and tons of support from Sega, Tecmo and Genki on the Eastern front and Lucasarts, Bungie, Argonaut, etc. on the West. I play my Xbox now probably more than anything else (Gamecube is a nice second system, but no way in hell could it ever become a primary system to me).
I'll probably get Nintendo's system second, solely because I'll want the next Metroid...and Mario Kart...and 1080....and...you get the idea. MS first, Nintendo second, Sony....well....I'm not into JRPGs and seriously underpowered and cheaply constructed hardware...so well after the second price drop if even then. It's really too bad that MS/Nintendo couldn't collaborate on a console.....

I'll probably end up with all 3 the day they launch like I did for this generation. If I could go with only one, I'd probably stick with Microsoft. Their support for high-end compoents has been spectacular and I can only assume that will continue. I hardly ever fire up the 'Cube or my PS2 when the sound are graphics are always a notch above on the 'Box, at least on the majority of the ports. As for system exclusives though, really can't go wrong with Nintendo. Metroid Prime....*drools*

Same here. Im not a Fanboy of any console. But most likely go with the system that has the games I want to play.

I'll support whoever has the most games I want to play and for the best value. I'm broke, and that isn't gonna change by the time the next round comes ;)
Most likely, it'll be Microsoft. If it's anything like this round, none of the systems had a totally killer app (for me at least, fuck Halo) at launch. I'll definitely end up owning the next N system for the unbeatable first party titles, and will definitely end up owning the PS3 for all the RPG's.
As much of an american whore as this makes me, it all depends on which one is the most powerful. That'll be the one I buy all the multiplatform games for, and that'll be the one I'll buy right off the bat. Even though i still don't own an Xbox, haha.

If they all come out on the same day I hope I have some extra cash. ;) If I have to pick one I would go with the one that has games that I just can't live without at the time.

i heard nintendo was launching theirs slightly earlier than the rest... not sure where i heard but o well..
to me it depends on the Specs of the system, the prices, the launch games, the look of the system.. i put thought into it lol.
i'm not gonna go out and buy a nintendo on launch day because i think nintendo's cool.. same for xbox and sony.
I'm hoping there will be alot of commercials for the launch games when it comes time for the consoles to launch, so i will get to check out the graphics and crap..
i plan on buying all 3 [supposing that there are only 3 launching].. but i dont plan on buying them on launch. I'll probably give it up to a year before i buy either, just to hear what the ppl who bought them think about em, and to find out what games seem to be the most liked and most fun.
also i think nintendo needs to stick with a better color, and leave purple alone :-P
also they're releasing like.. next year.. and i plan on getting the PSP and the Nintendo DS.. and maybe a GBA or GBA SP.. after i buy those and games for em, i'm gonna be broke.. and i'll be saving up my money as the consoles launch.
but all i can say is.. i will be getting all 3, i will be getting them within a year of launch, but in which order i buy them depends on the specs, the look of the console/controller, the games and prices.

I am not going out and buying the next generation of consoles right when they get out. This is because of a few reasons. 1) Money - They are so friggn expensive 2) Time - I am going to wait several months maybe more to see the library of games 3) Hardware - I doubt the next generation of consoles are going to be so much more advanced than what we have right now (PS2, xbox, ngc)

At this point in time, I'm not sure I'll even want to buy another system. I may have gotten jaded or I may feel that enough is enough. I may just continue to buy games for systems I already own. If I did buy another system...I've always supported Nintendo ever since getting my SNES 11 years ago but the last few years I've tired of seeing so many good games coming out for every system but the GameCube so I would likely this time just go with the PS3...

neo geo, heh, you can by like 3 new fighting games that are clones of the last 50+ fighting games. Neo Geo has a handful of fun unique games, but all the fighters are basically the same crap and blow after a while. But anyway, the answer is simple to the topic. I'll buy all of them launch day as usual.

Microsoft really knocked my socks off after the initial release crud and the release of the Type S controller. If they have the support for Xbox 2 like they have now I'll probably support that first.
Nintendo...I dunno. I was very disappointed with the Gamecube. Perhaps the N64 spoiled me but if felt like Nintendo really didn't raise the bar on anything except for Animal Crossing (which may not really count as it's from an N64 game called Animal Forest). Many of the exclusive Nintendo published games gave me a severe sense of Deja Vu-I played many of these games before on the N64. I understand sequels will share similarities with past titles but many of these games were near clones with prettier graphics. If I wanted clone games I would have gotten a PS2.
The controller can really make or break a system for me and the Cube controller blows. The N64 controller felt natural and even though the analog stick wore down quick it was tight and accurate. The Cube controller is uncomfortable and feels too genre specific. I'm amazed Soul Calibur II on the Cube is so popular as I disliked playing that game with those stupid bean shaped buttons.
For Nintendo to get my attention this time around they need to do change their direction. They need to make a "genre free" controller that also doesn't assume people are morons and can't find the A button over the B button. They also need to go back to the mentality of the cartridge games along with rekindling the the flames that created the classics to begin with. I see Nintendo kinda like Scotty from Star Trek. He had a limited amount of time and resources and he was able to slam bang something together that worked and worked WELL. In Star Trek 5 the Enterprise "broke down" after the ending of ST 4 Mr. Scott said "I think you gave me TOO MUCH time", indicating the lack of pressure to put together a tight functioning ship. In Nintendo's case they never really WORKED with the vast storage space of a CD/mini DVD before. It's like they got lazy or something and then started to do things they used to kinda bash in the past -CGI MOVIES!!!!
Nintendo, IMO, also has to stop this genre busting or twisting with their franchises. This is more of an ex fanboy rant than anything. It's a funny thing about Nintendo and franchise sequels. I have no problem playing the next version of Mario or Zelda as long as the general formula from past games isn't overly tampered with. I love Marios 1-3, World, World 2 and SM 64. Sunshine blew chunks as in my mind it wasn't a "Mario game". Same with Zelda: for me Zelda was all about the dungeon crawls. The overworld was typically short and sometimes easy (except Zelda 2) but the dungeons made you think and was usually a battle of wits and ability. Wind Waker had good dungeons but the majority of the game was a snore fest with all the stupid sailing. Then there is Metroid. It should not be in a first person perspective. Ever. For one I played this game before: the Star Wars Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games. They share many elements including the moronic first-person JUMPING PUZZLES THAT MAKE NO SENSE. They should've kept this game in a 3rd person view.
But if there's an Animal Crossing or a Yoshi's Story sequel my wife will want it and we'll own it.

I'll likely do what I did with the current generation, and wait two years for the prices to drop enough that I can afford it. Of course, by that point, I'll likely be out of school and could afford it anyway. The system I will get will depend on which system has the most interesting game, and in this generation, it was the Gamecube. Next generation, well, I doubt we will see the fruits of it for at least another year.

I'm most likely going to pass on the launches this time, as I am trying to save moolah and "stretch that gaming dollar".
That being said a new Zelda game and a price drop would "sell me" on a Nintendo Next, likewise on Suikoden V and a PS3, and actually, whatever system Shenmue III came out on...
Cheers,

i stopped buying nintendos after i bought a nintendo 64.. what a waste that system was.. i hate that i wasted money on a crappy system like the 64.. i don't like any of the games the game cube has so i'm not even going to waste my money on buying it.
i just stick with my ps2.

Uh, the Dreamcast? LOL
Seriously, I'll still be buying for the current 3 and the DC long after the next wave has started. Why? There'll be too many cheap games to be had, and that, my friends, is my reason for retro-gaming in the first place...
I bought the Cube 3 days after launch and waited a whole month for Super Smash Bros. Melee to come out. I'm still disappointed in that game. In fact, there were 3 initial reasons for buying the Cube: Animal Crossing, Die Hard: Vendetta, and Soul Calibur 2. I need to wipe the dust off all 3 of them right now...
My PS2 came along when a guy I know wanted to sell his before the $179 price drop. I haven't had a problem with it yet, and I love the $10 or less stuff I get for it. However, it doesn't get played enough IMO...
Xbox is my current favorite. I got the limited edition set with JSRF/Sega GT 2002 and haven't looked back. Deathrow gets more play time right now than all of my other games for the Cube and PS2, but I don't think that makes me a Microsoft devotee. Actually, it's the Sega games that keep me playing it...
When the next-gen system and game prices drop to the current level, I might hop on one.
GamecubeFreek
01-26-2004, 10:36 PM
Definitely Nintendo. I'm not giving up hope on them, and despite their last two system's weaknesses, they were still better than the competition. There may be more games on the PS2 that I like than on Gamecube, but the overall quality of those games on Gamecube are better than anything on PS2.
As for X box, well that's a different story. I have been playing it a lot, but that is really only thanks to Sega. JSRF and Panzer Dragoon Orta are two of the best games ever. I could really do without the other games, though I still enjoy them ( but it is really hard for me not to like a game enough to enjoy it).
I think that the next generation will be the exact same way for at least the first two years, so once again, my pick is Nintendo.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Microsoft flashed a few bills in Square-Enix's direction and pulled them to their side. In fact, I'd love it if that happened so that Sony could finally be put in their place. (The Dumpster, with the millions of other PS2's that ended up there anyway.)
I would support Nintendo only after they release their first Must Have game. For the Cube, that game was Smash Bros. I bought that the same day and couldn't have been happier.
Microsoft will probably once again have the best graphics. But until I see a game I like, (Halo 3? DOOM 4? Serious Sam Whatever?) I will wait.
For Sony, it'd be harder for them to convince me to buy. They have no big names. Final Fantasy doesn't even begin to phase me. Who gives a crap about those games? Except everyone not named Jasoco... And if they didn't even HAVE the FF series, Sony would have died off long ago. Here's hoping Microsoft gets smart this time around.
So basically it comes down to Nintendo and Microsoft. And whichever brings me a game I want first will be who I get first.
I'm hoping Nintendo gets smart too this time and decides to at least listen to some of its potential customers. While I don't need a DVD player or CD player in my system, many people base their decisions on those features. Which sadly, is why Nintendo is in this mess anyway.
And whatever Microsoft decides to do, they had damn well better allow me to use my Big Xbox controller on the system. None of that shitty S-Controller stuff. It'll take a damn good controller to make me want to use anything else. That goes for you too, Nintendo. If Nintendo had kept the N64 controller design for the Cube, I would have loved it better than what they released. What's with the fucking Z-Button? I can't reach the fucking thing! Same goes to you, too, Sony. The L1 and R1 buttons are so fucking hard to get to! Idiots. Yes, I am serious.
I just hope there are good Mario and Zelda games waiting in the wings when Nintendo does announce the next system.

the L buttons are not that hard to reach.. you just need to learn how to hold the controller. you don't need your thumb to reach it you have other fingers try using more than just your thumbs.. well at least normal people have more than just thumbs .. maybe you were in a car accident and lost all your fingers and only have your thumbs left.

nintendo was great back in the day but after the 64 came out i lost all hope in them.. since then all thier games were pretty much lame to me.. like the mario party things.. Zelda i used to love but after they came out with those weird looking cartoonish ones i finally gave up on nintendo.. NES and SNES were great i still love going back and playing Link: A link to the past on the snes.. i was playing zelda 2 on the nes but once igot to the last level i could never make it all the way to the last castle because the monsters kept killing me..
Virtual boy pretty much killed any last hope i had for nintendo.. that was just lame.. a couple games were ok but it really hurt my eyes to try to play it.
I want sega to come out with a newer style genesis thats backwards compatible with the older titles, reg + 32x and cd.. that would be fun for a month or so lol.. yes i have all three systems.. well the genesis system and the 2 addons.. they are addons.. why people call the 32x or the cd a system is beyond me.
I love to go back and play Kid Camilion.. i can't spell.. that was a fun game all those different masks and that skull mask that lets you have a tank.. FUN STUFF...
I can't play those newer sonic games.. I just want 2d sonic games ... 3d seems weird to me.. i love old 2d games.. when they change a game from being 2d to 3d they lose something in the process i'm not what it is but it's somethign they really need lol.

The PlayStation controller is THE WORST controller I've ever used. The most painful to hold.
I can't hold it five minutes without my hands hurting.
"you just need to learn how to hold the controller." What is that supposed to mean? Who holds a controller the wrong way? You think I'm a fucking moron? Go back to your cage, Fanboy. Fingers aren't meant to bend in that position. And Nintendo doing the same thing tells me they took a lesson on controller design from Sony. Fuck you, Sony.

Seeing that I haven't powered up my PS2 in almost a year, I'd have to say either Microsoft or Nintendo.
I love my Gamecube (and Gameboy Advance!) and I feel that it has some of the most original games and franchises for any system. Pac-Man Versus, Zelda, Smash Bros Melee, Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe etc are all fine examples. Sony to me is just full of games that all seem the same to me whether they are fighters, rpgs or whatever. Yes the 'cube doesn't have online play, but whoopity doo, I have two other systems that do and I never use them for online play. All my online gaming is on the PC anyways.
As for the Xbox, sure it doesn't have storied franchises like nintendo has or the third party support sony has, but let us remember this is microsoft's first crack at the console business and I feel (despite initial reluctance) that they are doing a very fine job. My Xbox is turned on every day playing games like Halo, Mech Assault, Baldur's Gate I and II, Beyond Good & Evil (best played on the xbox), Crimson Skies, Wolfenstein (also best on the xbox) etc. Xnox has made the elder console companys more competitve. Sony is finally offering a hard drive for downloadable content.
Additionally, the xbox has proven to be the most customizable. Currently my Xbox has a 160 GB Hard Drive with all of the MAME roms and chd files on it. Also, my xbos serves as an Atari 2600, Intellivision, Nintendo NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Game Gear, Genesis, TurboGrafx 16/PC-Engine, Playstation, Nintendo 64 and Gameboy player. It's like having an all in one console.
