Is atari 400/800 the same thing as atari XE?

Check out the Atari Home Computer Section at:

http://www.atarimuseum.com/

They aren't the same computers but they run about 98% of the same software. The XL and XE's were just upgrades of the original Atari 400 and 800's.

Sorry to plug it here but the best resource for what plays and doesn't play on a 400 or 800, a complete list of the games, and their collector values are here:

If there are specific titles you're wondering about let me know!

Or you could just send them to me, and I'll test them out for you. I'll be sure to report back and let you know what they work on. ;)

Seriously I would be interested in any I don't have, if you're thinking of trading/selling them. Games, not the educational crap. I have lots to trade.

As far as telling them apart, it's really not necessary. Just play on an XE and you'll be fine. I DO have an Atari XE130 for trade right now. In case you're interested.

Atari originally started out with CXL40.. part numbers for the 400 series computers. Then came the RX80.. part numbers, for the 800 series. The XE carts still have RX80.. and later RX81.. but were labeled "Atari XE video game cartridge" and were a creamy beige color with picture labels versus the old text labeled 400/800 carts with the ugly metal <<LEFT CARTRIDGE tops/backs on them.

For third party games it's hard to tell. Alot of games were targeted towards the 400 & 800 and up, but some are 800 and up, or XL/XE only. It depends on the ram requirements of the cart.

Alright thanks for the info, The cartridges I have are Final Legacy (it has that <<left cartridge on it) but the serial number Rx8067 matches the final legacy in atari XE section in DP7 guide. Star wars the arcade game, Captain Beeble (serial number matches again CR1002) and Baseball by inhome it says on the top 400/800 16k cartridge. I found all these games in the Dp7 guide under atari XE and the 2 of them had matching serial numbers (the other 2 didn't have serial numbers on the carts) so thats why I thought they were the same, but wasn't sure.

Yep definitely 8-bit carts. :) The XE is just the best version to have, since it plays the greatest amount of games. Nice finds btw!

So do they have the same value of the ones in the Xe section or are the values different?

They are the SAME as the ones listed in the XE section. They're ALL Atari 8-bit computer cartridges. The XE section, is just what they're calling it as a whole since you have the greatest number of games available on the XE. It's also shorter than calling it: Atari 400/800/1200XL/600XL/800XL/65XE/130XE/XE(gs) :D
