Since we had a list of comic-book video games, I was wondering if we could come up with a list of video-game comics. I, for one, always pick up a vg comic whenever I see one. I also pick up comic books from 80s toys and / or movies, but anyways.

What I'm listing are actual comic books - not the comics that appear(ed) in Nintendo Power. I'm only listing books for which a video game appeared first - that is, the comic is based off the game (and not the other way around). I'm also listing PC games here for completeness' sake.

I've found the following, but maybe someone else knows of some others? I've listed publishers if I know who did it. I have at least one issue of each of these in my collection, but I'm not going to dig them out to find out who published (and in some cases, it's really an obscure company). The info can probably be found out on www.comicspriceguide.com or something.

-Tomb Raider (arguably the biggest VG comic book)
-Super Mario Bros. (Valiant, and maybe there was another one?)
-Legend of Zelda (Valiant)
-Game Boy (Valiant)
-Captain N (OK, so technically this was a TV show, but where else can you find a two-page spread of Samus' ship?)
-Alone in the Dark
-Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter
-EverQuest
-Diablo
-Roger Wilco (the comic was called that, but it's from Space Quest)
-Shinobi (not sure who published it)
-Street Fighter II (there was one mid-90s series of this with somewhat crappy art called SF2, and there is one coming out right now just called SF with better art and gimmicks like holofoil covers and whatnot)
-Double Dragon (mid 90s, Marvel)
-Mega Man (out right now)

ADDED
-Turok (I believe this was a game first...right?)
-Pokemon
-Dragon's Lair (there's also Space Ace, but the TV show came before the game, I believe)

And Dead to Rights I've found as per DP...RTX Rock I haven't found.

...any others? I know there might be anime comic in Japanese books for a lot of those Japanese games. I don't know anything about them because I don't collect them, and I don't collect them because I don't care to collect something I can't read - but maybe someone else does. Please remember that I'm only talking about comics made about games - and not games that had a TV show, or comic book, or something else beforehand.

EDIT: Was Golgo 13 first a comic or a game? What about XIII?

A few recent ones off the top of my head.

-Dead to Rights
-Shinobi
-XIII
-RTX Rock (or whatever it's called)

XIII was a French comic first, sharing the same name as the recently released game. It debuted in 1984.

Turok was a comic before it was a game. (http://www.gregholland.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=742) Debuted 1993.

Golgo 13 was also a comic(manga) first.

Can't forget the Sonic the Hedgehog comics - that series has been going for years and I think it's nearing issue #200 by now. I should've kept up with them since the beginning, but only have the first 10 or so issues. Not like having the early ones is a bad thing!

What I'm listing are actual comic books - not the comics that appear(ed) in Nintendo Power.

If I remember correctly, Nintendo Power compiled the comics it ran for Super Mario Adventures (by Charlie Nozawa) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (by manga legend Shotaro Ishinomori) and released them in trade paperback format. Make of that what you will.

Moving on . . .

Remember the Mortal Kombat comics? They were actually promoted through the arcade games, which would occasionally flash a mailing address and encourage kids to send off for their very own Mortal Kombat funnybooks. Two issues were created; one for the first MK, and one for the sequel. Both were apparently published by Midway.

A Vagrant Story comic is said to exist only as a single promotional issue published by Eruptor. It's also said to be terrible, so I must own it.

Street Fighter II gave rise to a number of comic lines during the fighting game craze of the early '90s. Malibu's series is amusingly awful, as it took several liberties with the game's cast, going so far as to have Sagat kill Ken and send his scalp to Ryu. This didn't sit well with Capcom, and they made Malibu cancel the comic after a few issues.

Viz released a few Street Fighter manga titles, including a trade paperback about Cammy, and another series based on Street Fighter: The Animated Movie. Also found in the Viz catalog are a decent Samurai Shodown comic and a lousy Nightwarriors one.

Of course, this doesn't even scratch the massive number of game-based manga released in Japan. Even when one discounts the anything-goes underground comics (or doujinshi, as they call 'em), there's still a steady supply of officially sanctioned stuff inspired by games: Valkyrie Profile, Last Bronx, Black Matrix AD, Puyo Puyo, Xenogears, Metroid, Fatal Fury, Psychic Force . . . heck, I've even seen one devoted to the obscure Irem beat-'em-up Undercover Cops. Documenting them all would be extremely difficult, but perhaps there’s a database somewhere.
