I just picked up one of these the other day. What controllers can you use with it besides the ones that come with it? I tried regular Atari joysticks but they didn't work. If someone could tell me that would be great.

Also, just curious but both my O2 consoles (the one with hard-wired controllers and the one with removable controllers) have the same box. Were they released that way, or do I have mismatched boxes?

I don't think any aftermarket controllers work with the Odyssey 2. Wico or someone else my have made an adapter to use Atari-style joysticks though. I'm pretty sure all the boxes are the same. I also have a refurbished Odyssey 2 in a plain cardboard box with a sticker on the top that has the same artwork as the regular O2 box. It has grey removable controllers instead of silver.

Standard Atari/Commodore sticks won't work on an O2 even though the joystick ports are the same size and shape. Wico did make a 2600 joystick adapter for the detachable-joystick model O2, but it's really hard to find.

You can wire up your own adapter using these pinouts (http://www.classicgaming.com/o2home/articles/o2pinout.txt). I did this with my O2. If you prefer gamepads to joysticks (like I do), it's great because it lets you use a Sega Genesis pad.

As far as console boxes go, there are at least two types out there (three if you count the refurbished box as a separate type), but I'm not sure which kind of console went into which box, or even if there was any kind of consistency to it. Magnavox seems to have been rather inconsistent with how it produced its consoles.
