View Full Version : BEST Super Mario Game of ALL-TIME?

I was just wondering what the best super mario game of all-time to all of you was?
My vote is going for Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. I chose this because, just flat out took my breath away. I mean all the different levels, graphics, gameplay, different things to do was amazing too me!! I think that is where mario sunshine wasn't as good as the others. I felt like I was playing pretty much the same level over and over. I mean don't get me wrong, I own and love the game, but it's only about forth on my list.
My second vote would go to Super Mario Brothers 3. Sure it was OUTSTANDING for its time, the best selling video game ever, I think, and one of my favorite games of all time. I definatley played this game the most out of all the mario's, had the most memories, but like I said, Mario 64 just had the edge and is the best mario game that I have played yet!
I made this vote because Mario games are my #1 favorite out of every game, so would greatly like to hear and see what you guy's opinion is!
ALso, sorry if I left out a Mario game that is your favorite, I just put the one'e that did well, if it's not on there then pick other. :D

I chose SMB 1, with my next choice being SM64.

I voted for #3 just because the game some how still seems magical to me. Whenever I play the ice world, cloud world or giant world they seem so new to me. I wish Nintendo would take some of the world ideas and put them into a 3d adventure. Mario 64 was a very, very close second.

Wow, thats a tough one. I'd have to say my favorite is a tie between SMB 3 and SM 64, followed closely by the rest of series. ;)
Lost Levels>SMB1>SMB3>SMB2>Mario 64>Than the rest..

I'm a big fan of games that are easily controlled, and Super Mario World has the best play control of any of Mario games. I'll never forget the joy of finding this game and the SNES under my tree on Christmas 1991. SMW will always be my all time fave.

Mario 1, 3, and World are masterpieces. I chose Mario 1 because it is *almost* perfect. Lost Levels is too hard, Mario 1 is too easy, too bad they couldn't find that perfect balance somewhere in the middle.
As for Mario 64, it's alright to play, but I think it contains many of the elements in modern videogames that I have come to abhor. My biggest beef is what I call "scavenger hunt gaming". This is the technique used by almost ALL modern developers to create artificial replay value. In Mario 64 you had to pass each level multiple times (up to 6!!! times each for a perfect score) this involved hunting for red coins, hidden stars, and the like. I absolutely HATE this. I do not want to be FORCED into replaying the same level 6 times. Make the game fun and I'll naturally WANT to replay the game over and over. There were around 20 levels (I don't remember exactly) but you needed around 50-70 stars (again, I don't remember the exact number) to get to bowsers final chamber. That means replaying each level an average of 3 times is MANDATORY. WTF is up with that???
Phew... I didn't expect to rant like that, but oh well... Long live 2D Mario's!

SMB3 hands down for me. It was, by far, the most innovative Mario game ever created. If you compare each Mario game to the one that came out before it, I think SMB3 is the most inventive. Mario 64, it is true, was a leap in a new direction (3D) but, really, it was gamers expectations and the modern era of 3D gaming that forced Nintendo's hand with Mario 64. Gamers expected a 3D game, so Nintendo had to give it to them. That doesn't mean it's not a great game - and it is a terrific game - but, in my mind, it does mark it down a notch or two in terms of innovation. Besides, as already mentioned earlier in this thread, having to complete the same levels several times over for each one is a little tiresome.
SMW would be my second choice. This is, actually, one of the least inventive Mario games but still my second favorite just because the gameplay is so damn good. Plus, there is Yoshi, of course. :) Yisssssssssssssssssshiiiii

Hey, we have the same memory! Actually though I got mine on christmas eve '91 I think, right when they came out, from my grandma and then on christmas morning I remember waking up around 3 or 4 in the morning and opening it up and playing it! Super Mario World was by FAR the best game I had ever played then, and is still to this day in my top 5.

Mario 3, no doubt. It epitomizes gaming for many folks, harkening back to a simpler time. If you ask most folks about Mario games on the NES, this is the one many of them will remember, along with the first one.
Mario 3 does everything a great platformer should, it's straightforward, and provides a decent challenge when played straight through.
Mario 64 was close, as it turned around and redefined games as we know them, but Mario 3 is such a magical game, it can't be topped.

I chose SMB 3. I had it in 1990, and I bought it on GBA this past year, and it's still just as addictive as ever, no matter how many times I beat it.
Second place would have to go to Super Mario RPG, and in close third place I'd say Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, one of my favorite handheld games of all time.

Voted Super Mario World. I really like SMB3, it loads of great things that makes it one of the best platform games ever, but i didn't played the game as much as SMW. Got it with the SNES release here in Europe and since i was only 12-13 years old i had to play more then a day with the same game :)
I liked the new stuff like the yellow cape, loads off routes to choose, the map where you could go back to earlier worlds and the best ... Yoshi! Damn i love that dino :)

Wow, I can't believe Mario 64 isn't winning... I thought Mario 64 was considered one of the best games of all time?
Anyways, Super Mario World on the SNES was always my favorite... I beat that game six ways from sunday... I even managed to beat all the levels without using any of the switch palaces one day when I was bored (even the Special Zone).
I was actually disappointed that Super Mario World 2 was so completely different.

I'm surprised by the poll results; I never realized how many SMB3 fans there are here. Great game, of couse. All the Mario games are terrific.
Super Mario 64 is my favorite. The experience of playing that game, and wandering about for the first time, it's just about unsurpassed. You knew you were experiencing something that had never been created before, and that rush of discovery would never really be captured again. 3D games have just become tired and stale ever since then.
After that, I'd go with Super Mario World, which I slightly prefer over Mario 3, and Yoshi's Island, which is so vivid and quirky.
Hell, Donkey Kong is still fun every now and then. Mario just has the best luck; he's never been in a bad game.

Yes, Mario 64 definately set the standard for 3D games today.
I too was dissapointed that mario world 2 was pretty much completely different. I mean I did like the game, but some people don't even know it exists.
Just think if Miyamoto decided back then to make a "TRUE SEQUEL" to Super mario world, an exact follow up to the original.
If that happened I could truely die a happy man!!! :D

Super Mario World followed VERY closely by SMB3. Sunshine 8-) is the next one. I wonder why no one likes sunshine that much? Some people can't stand the "scavenger aspect" or the "spray nozzle". :o

Super Mario World. Even though I never owned a Super Nintendo "back in the day", it was the one game for the system that I played often enough (between several people's houses) to get really good at in absentia.
Having finally gotten myself an SNES last year, I made it my first goal to seek out the Super Mario All-Stars / Super Mario World combo cart. It is mine (because I pretty much overpaid at GameStop), and I am supremely happy.
Second on the list is Super Mario Bros. 3, the Mario game I have probably played the most in my lifetime - many all-night sessions were expended to beat the sixth, seventh and eighth areas of that game during my late elementary and junior high school years.
Now, I see that Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario are on the list, but...where's Mario and Luigi for GBA? I know a lot of people love that one.
Very good topic, by the way. :D

I would have voted All-Stars, but I thought that that was cheap because it has almost every old school one. My favorite is without a doubt SMB3. I played that forever on All-Stars, and now that I have it for the GBA, I don't think I'll be stopping soon. :)

Super Mario World for me. I loved the whole map feature plus this game had TONS of secrets. I can remember spending long nights trying to find all of the alternate ways to get through some of the levels. Good times...

this is where my vote goes to
Super Mario World and Mario 3 slaughter the polls
but the day this game arrived on Super Mario All-Stars under the name "The Lost Levels" I was hooked.
Any oddball sequel or lost titles to a games series...I will love it. Underdog titles are my favorite.

I'm in for Super Mario World (SNES). That was the first game I saw running on the SNES at a friend's house. The next week I had the system with SMW packed in. Many memories are recalled of my sister and I fighting over the controller and stealing lives! LOL

dunno. i'm gonna have to go with the original SMB, since it pretty much splits the game industry in to their BC/AD periods.
so many memories...
SMB3 and SMW were just breathtaking in their scope at the time, and still feel like fresh new 'discoveries' as someone put it today.
i saw a japanese N64 running mario 64 the day i went to buy SMRPG, and so that game will always be a lovely swan song for the SNES to me.
SM64 was like the original, another turning point, and i must say, the only 3D platform game i have ever found truly enjoyable. repeated visits to the levels emphasized their playground nature and were broken into perfectly sized chunks, and it didn't seem like repetitve backtracking fetch gaming like everything that followed (even zelda: OOT)...

It's not really a 'Mario' game, in my opinion. It's an excellent game in its own rite, but it never should've had the subtitle of: "Super Mario World 2".

Yoshi's Island is definatley my 2nd fav. platformer on the snes, next to Super Mario World of course. It definately wasn't the "proper" name, I mean considering all the other yoshi games. But now that i think about it, those games really didn't have Mario at all in them, if I can remember?

This is BY FAR, the game that was most argued about in my house with my little brother and sister. All of use always wanted to play it. Since there is 3 save files in the game, each of use would take one and see who could get the most stars in a week, or who could get the most stars the fastest, etc. GREAT MEMORIES!

Super Mario World. Man, I still remember the excitement of finding a hidden goal or keyhole, and discovering Soda Lake and the Special Zone for the first time.
SMB 3 is a close second. When I first saw that Mario could fly, my jaw literally dropped to the floor. I liked all the different items. Back when I had it on the NES, I hated beating Bowser and realizing I had a spare Hammer Brother suit, Fire Flower, or Tanooki suit I didn't use. So needless to say, I was glad that you could save items on the Super Mario All-Stars port.
Super Mario 64 was great, but it had some minor camera problems and it can get repetitive going through each level 6 times.

I spent so many more hours on SMW than any other game. Sure, I've played SMB1 and 3 a lot (and SMB2 eventually, heh)! But I loved the SNES so much, I used to play it over and over and over. It was my only SNES game for about a year, since games were so expensive to me back then. I rented a bit, and friends brought over other games, but it was pretty much just Mario for a year.
However, going back to SMB3 after SMW, I really liked it more. Maybe I was just sick of SMW, lol. It's silly, but don't really like the SMW graphics as much as those beatiful All Stars and GBA SMB3 ones. The main reason though is that there are more suits in SMB3 than SMW. Yeah, there are different Yoshis, meh. I think I just got really sick of SMW,heh.

I don't have a favorite. I can't pick. I don't really care for SMB 2 and that is about it. I can finish SMB 1 everytime, I have problems in 3 but love it, SMW is an amazing game for the time and finishing the star road is second nature. Never finished SMW 2, just came out to soon to DKC.
Mario 64 is my fav. It defined how 3D platformers should work. Kids today don't know what a wonderful transistion Mario64 was. It was done perfect. It also has some interesting bugs. like harvey threw the door and the butt bounce to the end of the game.
