View Full Version : Atari 7800 Cuttle Cart - Any (Other) Buyers?

I bit the bullet and preordered one. Anybody else?

The appeal of playing any VCS game on my 7800 was hard to overcome. Plus I've dabbled in hacking VCS roms so the appeal of playing my own hacks put me over the edge. I've already got MMCs (and the ability to write to them using my PPC) so there was no extra cost (thank goodness!)

Before anybody even *thinks* to ask the answer is NO. This will *never* stop me buying the actual carts. Playing 'em is one thing - seeing them on the shelf stacked in alphabetical order in all their colourful labeled gloriousness can not be replaced :)

I preordered as well (still have to pay, waiting for credit limit to reset). I don't even own a 7800. The thing is, I have a cuttle cart and an intellicart and love them so much. I couldn't pass this up. I figured I'd be able to pick up a 7800 from one of you guys eventually. Isnt the MMC just a Multimedia Card like those used in camera's? Also, I gotta get that POKEY chip, but I see ball blazer carts are somewhat common. Gotta love Chad Shell!!

Perhaps I should already know this, but where are they available and for how much?

Yup, although not all cameras use them. My camera uses FlashCard, not MMCs. My PPC uses both, though, so I'm set.

Trust me, if you get a 7800 eventualy I'm sure it'll come with Ball Blazer. It's one of the dozen carts I own :)

Just as with the previous Cuttle Carts (2600 and Intellivision), I really, really, would love this. One of my favorite aspects of game collecting is the hardware, and I think these are very cool.

Unfortunately, just as with the previous models, this is just too rich for my blood, and I have to pass.

As for Ballblazer, yeah, the 7800 version is good, but I like the 5200 version more.

I'm taking a pass on this. I bought the original, and think it's a fantastic little product - but even with that I just don't use it enough. (In fact it is up for auction on ebay - see my post in the buy/sell forum for the link).

I'd consider buying the CC2 if it worked on a 2600, but I don't own a 7800 and don't have any real desire to get one. Add in the fact my digital camera uses compact flash, I'd have to shell out even more money on a new card and reader in addition to the system. All told it would be just under $300, which I'd rather spend on other things right now. I used to be a purest and really enjoy the old titles on the actual hardware, but the fact for me emulation has advanced to a point where in many cases it is just as good. And for the titles that it isn't I likely own the real cart anyway negating the need for the CC2.

I wouldn't mind it, but since i have the original+a minidisc player, I've got all my VCS roms pretty well set. I wouldn't mind getting one for the simple fact that it'd be nice to test programs on an actual 7800 with, but, I'm in no programming shape to do anything.

I seriously want on. I intend to resume work on my 2600 game some time this summer, and that would be a great tool.

Pitfall 2? :D

Actually some of the other supposedly "non working" Activision 2600 titles do work fine through CC2 on a 7800 according to Curt. Theory being the cart cases don't allow the circuit boards to be properly inserted.

So seeing as I pre-ordered one, I only need 3 things now, so if anyone can help me with these, much thanks ;)

1) 32MB MMC card (I have a reader already)
2) Pokey chip
3) Complete set of 2600 PAL ROMs :P

I've had the Cuttle Cart for two years and haven't had the chance to use and enjoy it, though I would love to. The reason for this is the makewav software needed to convert binary ROM files into wav format is PC-only, and I've got a Mac. So I've got this hard drive full of ROMS that I can't convert and use on my Cuttle Cart. I would love it if a Mac version of the needed makewav software were developed.

I'd love to have one of these... but $200 is just too much for me too.

I've got a Supercharger on the way, and it will help me with my Atari fix.. I don't think I will mod it though.. it'll be good enough the way that it is. :)

Well that kind of sucks.. Isn't there some kind of PC emulation software that you could use? Aside from Makewav, you could also try "playbin" to just play each bin file one at a time as you want... but then again you'd still need a pc or an emulated pc to use it. But I figure that'd be a lot easier to use than Makewav should you ever get the chance.

As far as the CC2.. I'm in the same boat. The price is pretty steep.. that and you'd need a MMC and also.. the only thing really it would be adding is 1) the menu convenience and 2) the 7800 games. I prefer playing 2600 games on a 2600 too, which of course the CC1 does great. So is the CC2 worth the 200 bucks? I'm debating that now. There's still a couple o' days

Too expensive for me but that sounds really cool.

I use a Supercharger with my Mac laptops. Since you've had two years you could have run makewav through Virtual PC or done all the conversions on a friend's or a school/work PC. Because once you've done the conversion bin to wav all the roms will work with the Cuttle Cart from your Mac. I just use Quicktime to play the .wav files and then they're loaded.

I'm sure if you asked someone would make you an audio CD so you could use it. In fact since I'm selling mine I'll give you the disks I made if you'd like for the price of shipping. Just PM me if you are interested and I'll see if I can find them. It seems like a waste to have the toy and not be able to use it.

The lack of the chip doesn't bother me personally. Nor the fact that I can't play Pitfall II. 90% is as good as 100% in this case :)

For those that don't have MMCs or MMC writers I'm sure you can work out trades with people. I know I wouldn't mind buying an MMC and filling it with games in exchange for game(s) worth the cost of the MMC. And I'm sure others would do the same.

(I've got 1700 2600 roms and 54 7800 ROMs that should fit on a 32MB MMC)

I'm hoping to use this opportunity to pick up a Cuttle Cart 1.

It's hard to justify $300 bucks (including the cost of a 7800 and everything else) when I don't really care about the 7800 games. The 2600 aspect of it all however is very appealing.

The toughest thing about justifying it is my GP32, PS2, and PC all play 2600 games, plus I have at least 100 actual 2600 carts which include most of the games I like!

If you have a Stella CD, there's Mac programs on there for converting bin files to wavs :) If you don't, PM me and I'll send it to you.

The Stella CD is still available from Hozer Video Games, and only $5 shipped to US addresses! Get 'em at:

Maybe. Maybe not. All the CC1s that have appeared on eBay since CC2 was announced have gone for $200+ so far...

If my 7800 was working and I had the money for the cc2 and MMC writer/reader then maybe I would get it.

Er...didn't [Randy Crihfield] go out of business in 2002? Or is he still operating 'under the radar'?

He only closed up the webpage and his email address, he didn't go out of business. The Stella CD is definitely still available.

I took the plunge!

Soon I will be able to play many a hacked rom on the real hardware!

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

Funny thing is, I wonder if Bob Colbert';s Cheetah program will function as a game genie with this thing....anyone got any input (or cheetah code lists? :-)?
