I think it's a matter of pretty much everyone who wants a ps2 already having one. I think this year was pretty good for the Xbox/GCN because those same people were buying "secondary" consoles. The Nintendo rep was in my store a few weeks ago and asked me some questions for a survey, among them: "do you think most people buying a Gamecube already have a ps2 or Xbo?" to which I honestly replied "yep, for the most part." Oh well, the Ninty rep isn't as nice as the Xbox rep to be honest (Xbox rep gives demos, keychains, etc., Nintendo rep gives nothing and was snappy about me asking for a paper Sword of Mana sign she was taking down...)...and I have yet to see a Sony rep.

The decline in Sony's hardware sales is clear proof that Sony is failing and will be dropping out of the console business, probably after the PS3 fails miserably.

Funny...I've got all kinds of sweet Nintendo and Xbox swag, but I get no love from the PlayStation rep. Yet, we do far more sales for Sony than we ever have for the other two. Guess it must be the difference between your region and mine. :hmm:
Still, I've got to see about getting our PSone in-store demo kiosk when it comes down - I know Sony isn't gonna want it back, and we'll just destroty it otherwise.
Oh...Zack, were you saying something?

I suspect it's just that all the PS2s that are selling now are replacement consoles for all the ones that break :D And when the price drop comes, they'll sell wildly cause people can afford to replace their broken ones again! lol
Seriously though....not surprising numbers in any way shape or form.

Hmmm... it's more likely that the PS2 is simply reaching the limits of the $199 price point, and will experience a beefy sales jump when Sony deigns to drop the price (although I don't see that happening until around the same time as the PSP launch, making Sony the center of attention on both the home- and portable-console fronts).
The PS2 price dropped to $179.99 and has been there for some time now.

PS2 sales are mostly from people buying it over and over. I know people that bought it three times because the damned thing keep breaking. The PS user base is not that big because the sales are not 1 PS2 = 1 User.

Ooh, I'm entitled to jump on this one! ;)
Really, though, I'd love to get a PS2 and so would lots of people I know. Let's take three of us (me and two friends) -- one's got a PS2, one an XBox and a GC, and I've got a GC (bro has an XBox). I have two PS2 games, but I really don't want to spend $199 right now.
As Zach said, a combo option would appeal more to me, but I won't pay $199 for a Dreamcast (regular one, anyway) and I'm not going to pay $199 for the PS2 (though it's certainly a more accessible system I find the games on the XBox and GC quite easy to get into).
