I picked up a Playstation 1 for $20 today.

Why is it referred to as PSX? Is there a difference between PSX and PS1?

They also had a smaller PSOne (I think it said on it) for $30. What is the difference with that and the larger, cheaper one?

Thanks!

The ORIGINAL PSX is the boxy grey Playstation. Released in 1995.

When the PS2 came out, Sony re-released the Playstation as the PSOne. This is the tiny little cute thing you see now.

I would have gone for the PSOne, though. I paid $30 for my PSX a month ago. But if I could have, I would have gotten the PSOne. Damn, I wish I could have gotten one for $30.

Also, the PSOne is somewhat better. The PSX that you have will eventually start giving you problems.

What model did you get? (Check the bottom for a Model Number.)

Thanks! I also saw a brand new PSOne in Target for $50.00. That's way too much for my collecting habbits. LOL

Maybe someday I'll get a PSOne to go with my PSX.

The 500x series is nice for modding, everything was still nice and big then. On the 700x, everything began shrinking, and later in the 900x run is when they began coating chips if I remember correctly.

IIRC, PSX was an internal nickname for the original Sony Playstation that somehow caught on. So, the original PSX was referred to as a PSX. Then came the PS2. Then the original PSX was re-sculpted and remade into the new PSOne. Unfortunately, Sony decided to release that new multimedia thingy and call IT a PSX, so now I mostly see people referring to the original Playstations as a PS1, to differentiate it from a PSOne. So that leaves us with the PS1, PS2, PSOne, and the new PSX.

PSX was short for Play Station Experimental. That was the industry media's nick name for it before the very first playstation (aka ps1) was released.

the PSone is totally worth 50 bucks, especially because boot disks are expecially cheap and backups are even easier.

The PSX was the name for the SNES add-on which never made it out the door.

However, the name just kinda lingered around and was loosly used for the early version of the original Playstation in gaming circles. PS wasn't a good designator as it was already taken for power supply so people started to use PSX. You have to remember the PS1 was only the PS1 after the Ps2 was released before that it was just Playstation. Just like we don't call the current Xbox the XBOX1.

I believe the main reason it stuck around was because the ebay title line only holds so many letters and PSX is shorter than PLAYSTATION. You couldn't/didn't use PS or PS1 (as explained above) and it just stuck.

I further believe in an attempt to distinguish it from the smaller newer PsOne many people kept the name around and it then refered to the grey model.

Sony themselves have never refered to it as the PSX. Just a gamers slang lingo kinda thing. Now that there is a REAL PSX the rules have been changed.

Mine is the 7501 mode. It has the Parallel port on the back. Not that I'll probably ever use it.

I also plan to get a PSOne one day to go with, and replace, this model. But only once they hit $30 New (Or $20 used). I can't believe Sony WON'T LET IT DIE!

Come on, think about it. A system can never become "Classic" until it has been discontinued. This one's already lasted over a generation and a half! It has to die off some time! The longer they wait to kill it off, the longer it'll be before it hits classic status and the longer before the newer games hit the bargain bin.

*sigh* x_x

That's only a problem if you're a collector. ;)

Me, I say, BRING THEM ON! Let the new games keep coming out as long as people like me keep buying them! :D

Thanks, Jasoco!

After 2-3 weeks, my PSX stopped working. Wouldn't read ANY discs.

I brought it back to Gamestop to exchange. I was impressed with their 90 day warranty on used stuff. They 'upgraded' me to the PSOne for an extra $10. ($20 for the PSX, $30 for the PSOne). Of course, I had to get some discs too! Got a bunch of cheap ones - .99, 2.99, etc.

Man, it's surprising how small that PSOne is! I still want to get a PSX just for my collection, and I think a friend is giving me one. (Free is good)

You're welcome, and also in better luck than I was.

Just recently GameStop lowered the prices of used PSX's to $20 and used PSOnes to $30! Damn them!

Just wish new PSOnes would come down too.

And until Sony gives the word to drop the price or at least stops production and discontinues the system, they'll stay that way.

Yeah, I expect them to stay at $50 for a while. That's not a bad price, though. And some stores are offering the PS One with the screen for $100.

Like "some Gamestop stores"? I have been lusting after a PSone/screen combo for many months, but keep telling myself that $130 is too much cheddar.

No, I THOUGHT it was Circuit City. Someone found it there and posted a thread on it.
