So can someone explain what the HELL happened here? How come only three pics were 'leached' (whatever that means) when there was seven perfectly other fine and good pictures of the cabinet? Would'nt they ALL be good or ALL be bad? @_@

The picture in the top left and the ones at the bottom are ones that get uploaded to eBay. The ones in the middle section are the ones he linked.
And, the usual abbreviation is NSFW.

What was it?
I'm not sure how best to explain this, cause I don't understand what happened myself. :(
Someone was selling a nice looking, good condition, playable T2 pinball game -- you know, one of the eletronic ones? He took about seven pics of it and uploaded it to EBay. Then, for some reason, he linked pictures of SOMETHING (we don't know what) from SOMEONE (again, we don't know who) from SOMEWHERE (we don't know that either.)
SOMEHOW the person whose images were being linked to found out about it (again, I don't know how) and decided to get some revenge (and NOT be a very nice, civilized, or kind person at ALL) on the seller and changed the pics to some rather disturbing pictures and text. (One can only assume he did'nt bother to E-MAIL the seller in the FIRST PLACE to complain and ask for the links images to be taken down. Like I said, not civilized or nice at all.)
Well, the original seller was aghast at this (I can only imagine) and ended the auction so that it would get yanked. The pinball machine will probaly go back up for sale soon, with the same pictures but no images.
So we have a lot of confusion over what happened and we have a seller and a site host who BOTH acted poorly and inmuturly, IMHO.
Confusing enough? :P

Three images were replaced by some lewd ones, with text that threatened the integrity of the seller. If the images took up a significant amount of bandwidth or were viewed many times the host site can see using a program (if installed) to view where their bandwidth is going, top referrers, etc. That is how they will know where their images are being used. What then happens is they use one of the lewd images, give that image the same file name as the one used in the auction, and since the seller is directly linking, whatever files are changed from the host would immediately show up in the auction.
I've got file 'X'. Someone is linking directly from my site, stealing my bandwidth. I find out who. Now, I've got file 'Y' that will put them in their place. I rename, remove, do something else with 'X', perhaps rename it to 'Z' and put it to where the normal 'X' was in my site, so no one browsing will know anything is going on. Then, I change file 'Y' to 'X' and upload to the same directory where the original file 'X' was, overwriting it. Immediately that shows up on the bandwidth theif's site/auction/whatever.
Now, you can disable this all the time. 'Disable Hotlinking'. I've done it for my site; Tripod, other free sites do it. Instead of someone being able to link to the image, they are essentially "blocked" and rerouted to another page or shown another image. Case in point:
http://www.gamekult.com/tout/forum/lire_108187.html
This site is why I disabled. They basically did a history lesson using my bandwidth. I stopped that by using a script that blocked the images, then replaced them with another image that I put on my portfolio site (I've got bandwidth to spare there). They went through 2GB in 2 days!

Shit. That's really bad. If you ever feel like posting a reply in that forum, I could translate it for you into French, swear words included. :D
Seriously, though, there's image linking and image linking, but that's just ridiculous. Why not just transfer your entire site on their forum, while they're at it?

Thanks, at least that explains the somehow part. I guess we'll never know the rest. I STILL say they were both a ass.

It's basically a pictorial history of Nintendo's consoles. They used many, many images from Achika's site (if you go through page 1 of that thread, you can see a ton of Achika's anti bandwith stealing images), rather than simply link to her site (and any other site with tons of Nintendo-related pictures).
I'm starting to consider posting in that forum to give them some shit over their image leeching. I'd probably get flamed back, but I don't care. It's not like I know any of these guys.
Oh, and the level of discussion there is like reading a thread on the gamefaqs forum. Made me scratch my head quite a bit. It's also because French-speaking people in Europe tend to write in forums in a style that tends to annoy me (not that different from the l33t speak, IMO).

I completely respect Archika's actions protecting her bandwidth. At least she didn't post a gay porn picture or something which shows class.
However, many of us including myself have linked images in this very forum so let us not throw our stones from our glass houses.

I'm not saying that linking images is bad per say, but these people were really leaching her site. The whole first page of that thread were images linked from Achika's site.

Maybe you should wait until you get home to click on links people post in threads, then.
Actually I believe this forum is for anyone of any age, and wether at home, work or school, it was very inappropriate for anyone to click without thorough warning and should have been labeled better as such. It doesnt matter if I personally find this auction amusing or not, "not safe for humans" makes it sound like a joke not a warning.
Maybe the forum MODs should have had the decency to change the topic heading, added extra warning, or removed the link in the first place, just a thought.
If the answer to that is no thats not their Job to filter content or label it appropriately, then I think i will go create as many auctions featuring funny looking naked transvestites holding super-imposed Jamma Boards, eeprom chips, and sliced up Xbox Game Manuals as i can , and post a new thread for each one Labled like this "Dont clicky cuase its not safe to see an arcade harness and a dicky" and "wow that PCB just got Transvest-Pwned but dont look" and "Take a look at the holes and slits on this one HAHAHHAHANWS"
At least they would be video game related right?

I have to agree here. I pop by DP when I'm at work, and I clicked on the link. I happen to work in a cool office, so it's no big deal. However, a better warning would have been appreciated and, what's more, appropriate considering the content. I had no idea what "NWS" meant. How about a little more warning and a little less attutude from the mods?

Yeah, I choose NOT to link to "mature" stuff when I disable hotlinking so people come to my site through the url on the replacement instead of being offended and turn away.
I don't think anyone here has gone through an entire 11 page thread, taking pictures from other sites in just about every other post. Besides taking the images, they took nearly ALL the text right from my site and just translated it. (When I did a babel translation it spit it back to me exactly how I had written it in English on my site) So not only were they stealing massive amounts of bandwidth from me and others, but they were also plagerizing (sp)
If you look at page 8 or so, I signed up for an account. Said something in english about not stealing bandwidth but later went back and edited it to like ... . I believe that was about the time I think they said something about "that guy changing images" which I ABSOLUTELY HATE. Oh well, maybe the update I'm doing now will show a little more of a feminine touch. :D

*shrug* It's not attitude, it's just my opinion. Personally, I can't do anything about it in this forum, because I'm only a moderator for Off Topic. I just think that it's often easier to change your own behavior than the behavior of others, because obviously the consequences for you clicking the link aren't their consequences for posting the link so people often don't take that into consideration.

Well, the pics are gone. The auction is gone. And I'm glad I didn't see it.
Anyway, if someone did that to me, and was doing it on an Auction, I would simply replace them with images containing the text "This person is stealing my Bandwidth. And my copyrighted material."
If it was another site that wasn't an auction and the owner made it clear that he was the owner of the images when I know clearly they are mine. Then that's another story. Especially if it was a forum. It would depend on the sites audience. Then I would decide what to change to.
I don't believe in turning off linking on my own site because I do it myself. My signature is on my site. All the screenshots or photo's I post are mine.
I have a CGI/Perl program installed on my computer that lets me view the IP's, referrers, searches, sites being linked from, etc at any time to the second. That way I can tell right away if my image is being used elsewhere. Ever since I put a notice on my Movies/Video's section of my site, linking was stopped. Now the only links to images I have are on the half-dozen forums I visit. So all is well right now.

You know you can specify the following things:
1) What sites can and cannot use your images.
2) What files can and cannot be linked to.
I have it set up so DP and my ME page on eBay can use images from Vidgame, but not the rest of eBay and no other sites can use the images or they get the "bandwidth stealing" pic. If I want to use my space to put pictures on eBay, I use a .jpe file since .jpg and .gif are blocked from being linked to directly.
