Over $500 for one movie that Disney swore they'd never release because it's racists (slavery and language used in the movie could be considered offensive to some black people) Laserdisc and VHS version already sells for crazy amount.

And yes I'm sure that DVD's a pirate as Disney never made any DVD version of this move. Seller did mention having laserdiscs.

Off the track, I still don't see why Disney's hiding the movie since other classic movies like Gone with the Wind did feature slavery and I don't see anyone lining up to protest the movie.

Still... $500. Makes me want to burn VCDs of the movie I downloaded a while ago.

heh.. I'll bet the winner gets upset when he's mailed a $500 DVD-R in a paper sleeve.

Conicidentaly I've been trying to find out information on the DVD release of the Beatles film Let It Be which I've been seeing on eBay but, as any Beatles fan knows, was avaliably on home video for like 5 minutes in the early 80s and has been OOP ever since, with the Fab urr... Two in seemingly no hurry to release it again. I suspect it's kind of the same story, though at least those are showing a cover (modified from the laser disc artwork) so at least the bootleggers are putting forth some sort of creativity.

AFAIK, This was avaliable on video in the US in the Early 80s. Hell, I even remember seeing it at a theater on a revival run. BUt the word I heard is Disney has it burried in the vaults and if they can help it it's never going to see the light of day again.

There's a lot of smaller comapnies who have put out this kind of stuff in the past (such as Warner Bros. cartoons that were racist and whatnot.) Bootleg, of course. I just hadn't seen it on DVD until now.

I won't be suprized to see more of this type of stuff pop up as DVD burners get cheaper. I'd galdly pay even if it was a DVD-R to have a good quality dub of stuff like the original cut of Blade Runner (which came out in an excellent Criterion Laserdisc before the "director's cut" was created) or the legendary "Alan Smithe" (sp?) cut of Dune which was released on Lazerdisc in Japan. If the studios don't want to put this stuff out, someone else will.

I wouldn't pay $500 for any of that though. :)

It definitely was out on video in the 80s as that's how I saw it. It was also on TV here at least once during that time too.

//now awaits WW2 Disney shorts on DVD! :P

I find it interesting that companies like Disney and Warner Bros. try to whitewash their past by blacklisting their own WWII-era and early cartoons. BTW, there was a humongous collection of early WB cartoons that were available on laserdisc about 10 years ago. There were something like 4 or 5 discs, each with 15 hours of material or so (or so I remember).

They should rerelease these cartoons, with some kind of warning of course, not unlike what was done with the Astroboy manga in French (in the first volume, there's a disclaimer regarding stereotypes, the manga being originally released in the 1950s).

I'm not saying that these old cartoons and movies would be acceptable were they released today. Then again, Disney also pretty much blacklisted its early barn humor cartoons (ever seen the one where Mickey uses farm animals to make music? You're not likely to see it run on TV anytime soon!). Even Speedy Gonzales was blacklisted from The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show for most of the show's run, until it was brought back in the late 90s.

Those are pretty mild, I got the chance to see all the WB and Disney WWII animation while in the film/video/animation program at Rochester Tech. The racist stuff is REALLY racist, and i'm not talking Tom and Jerry black woman's legs and racest voice. I'm talking actual string the nigger up bad (no offence, but several of the shorts were quite disturbing with the amount of "niger","boy" in the dialog.)
The Disney WWII stuff is definately more tame. The Hitler as a bumbling oaf ones are really funny (they still show those, no one cares if you make fun of Hitler.)
A good portion of them have to do with belittling the Japanese culture, and I mean Japan as a third world, back woods Gangis Kun tribe of savages who are into imbreeding (yep.) I don't think that would go over well with those who picked up Kingdom Hearts over there..

Good place to start if you're looking for info on the cartoons.

EDIT: the link goes into all sorts of changes with cartoons regarding violence and stereotypes. Interesting stuff.

I have kind of a fascination with this stuff (changing the cartoons, not racist images). Just amazed at some of the stuff that was socially acceptable in a different time. That and the pathetic attempts to whitewash and pretend it never happened by the people who made it.

Right, that's what I meant. I didn't mean to suggest that African-Americans back then were any more aproving of those kind of images than they are today. It just amazes me that anyone could have thought that kind of stuff was ok, period.

Agreed. Sorry if what I was saying came out wrong. Didn't want you, or anyone else, to think I was supporting that kind of stuff. I just think trying to act like it never happened does a disservice as well.

FYI, the "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," and "Cannibal Holocaust" DVDs are all bootlegs too, although you all probably knew that. ;)

I just checked out the censored cartoon page, and maybe it's because I'm in my 30's, but I distinctly remember seeing the MGM cartoons completely uncut when I was a kid. (This was before cable was around...yes, I'm OLD. ;) )

I never saw that as racist. It was correct for the time and place that the cartoons were made in. And yes, I have noticed her voice has been changed. Sadly. Thommmmmmmasssssssss! :P

I've seen a couple of the cartoons in question in a very young life, but being over here coupled with my younger age, I missed most of them...

How was it correct for the times? Maybe if you were an american you could fully understand
