Well over the past 4 days I dug up some tough NES games that I couldn't beat when I was younger or they were listed on the Hardest games of all time discussion. So suggest some games to beat that aren't strategy or RPG. I guess i'm looking for more action and adventure games.
I've beaten in the past 4 days:
ninja gaiden 1, 2, and 3
battletoads
ghost 'n goblins
I think i'm going to tackle Bayou Billy tomorrow.

Ironsword: Wizards and Warriors II...
That was a fairly tough one for me, at least.. and a prety good game to boot.

I second Ironsword. I could always get to the final bosses, but never could take them out. There was always two or three left.
Another pretty tough game is the first Ninja Turtles game. That one used to send many a child into fits of anger.

Ninja Gaiden... 3. I predict you'll be spouting out swears by... stage 2. Have fun.
EDIT: D'OH! x_x
I must commend you... flogging NGIII is no small feat. It's not one I could accomplish. However, a game that WILL make you scream out in frustrated pain is Holy Diver. It's an import, it plays like Castlevania... and IREM made it. Beware, take care, beware.

Its a famicom game but it is either called "Takeshi's Castle" or Beat Takeshi's Challenge". Try and beat that game.

Cheetahmen II cannot be beaten. The game is impossible to win literally, because at some point after a certain level the game completely craps out and freezes.
Anyway for hard Nes games, I agree about Dragon's Lair. That game is almost impossible and not very fun. Dirk moves very very sluggishly, and don't be fooled by the life bar you see at the top of the screen. 99% of everything in that game kills you in one hit. The game is a piece of crap.
Metalstorm is one I recommend. The first time through the game isn't too tough, but it has a second quest, and it gets ludicrously hard at times. It'll probably take you awhile to conquer that one.
And also Codemaster's games are usually pretty difficult. Doesn't help that several of them are long and don't have continues.

Snake Rattle & Roll
Super Pitfall (if you're really patient, I'm told)
I don't think some of those levels in Wrecking Crew were really designed with the intention of being finishable.
And, of course, Ghosts 'n' Goblins.

Low G Man
It's not fun, it's not good, basically the game sucks ass... Playing it is like putting two hot nails into your eyeballs...
Difficult to beat though... (Mainly because of the horibble controles =P)

Jackal and Thundercade.
Love those two games!

I gotta ask, are you using svae states or game genie?
I have very fond memories of Low G Man, so NYAH! Don't listen! Play! Fun!
The only really hard part of that game is the hardest difficulty mode....even then, I remember the hardest part was just beating the last boss...that's the only real problem. Good game though.
Star Force is a bitch. I got to to the 16th or 20th level out of 24 and died...I had to use the NES advantages slo-mo feature to get that far...took me 3 years. The US NES version is the only version I know of that has an ending...the Japanese one doesn't even have one! Funnier still is the ending (yes I did beat it with game genie eventually)...it says "coming soon: SUper Star Force" which onlycame out in Japan!!
Who said Tom Sawyer is hard? I beat that game in about 2 hours...my second try, I think...no cheats.
Is Wrecking Crew even beatable? I mean, does it actually have an ending sequence?
Double Dragon II is also pretty easy...you will probably beat it in about 2-3 hours. III is a bitch, though! I hate that game! ARGGGH!
Solstice is real, real tough, even with unlimited lives....an all time-fave of mine, though. I actually made the only known map of it in Photoshop (besides that dumb ascii one floating around). If anyone wants it, I'll be glad to share. It sure is purty.
Burai fighter is very tough....fun and frustrating atthe same time. The super-hard extra hidden difficulty level is SOO hard....doable, but hard (psst, use slo-mo). The ending for that hints that you cheated, if I remember correctly.
Abadox is probably one of the most under-rated awesome NES games. Killer music, crazy difficulty level, real nice graphics.
TMNT will have you screaming. If I remember, the only way to win is to repeatedly grab the scrolls in one of the level 3 buildings and stock up to max. You will never make it through level 6 otherwise.
I think Metal storm was kinda tough (I think the level 4 boss is the one that was the worst...tougher than the last boss....
A good challenge is to play games you already beat and try to do it on one life...brings all new challenge to them!
If I think of others, I'll post again. Good luck! Have fun.

NARC is actually pretty easy if you take your time and get a lot of busts to build up your extra guys. You ca just crouch at the end of level 1 and bust 99 Das Lof Gangs without much problem.

I see some members mentioned Double Dragon 2 and Shadow of the NInja.
IMHO those are fairly easy games, just be warned :)

Wrecking Crew doesn't have an ending, but you could play through all 100 stages. Sounds tough and it is, but it's doable if you play the game long enough.
Some other tough Nes games I've thought of.
Solomon's Key
Mighty Bomb Jack
Super Spy Hunter

Just beat TMNT 1 and I have to say that it was actually an easy game. I used to play this game all the time when I was little but I coudln't ever beat shredder because my turtles never had any power after getting wrecked through the technodrome. The key is just stalking up on scrolls until you get to the technodrome. After that you use them to get all way to the shredder. I beat shredderi in 5 seconds. 5 hits with the scrolls and he was dead.

I also like Low G Man. I don't see what's wrong with the control'.
It's also a tough game, but I managed to beat it on the hardest level.
TMNT, I think I beat Shredder with Donatello in some hits. He was only jumping, what a piece of cake.
I want to repeat Boulder Dash. I have to playing it again, can't stand my brother beat the entire game and I didn't LOL
Bart vs. the Space Mutants also provides a good challenge.
