So are you trying to say originality in the video game industry is dead?

I'm going to guess that there's nothing out there as well known on the XBox...I can't say if any games are better, but you sure don't hear about them (supposing they exist). I wonder if Ninja Gaiden will help bump Halo further down the list...

I still would'nt be surprised if Nintendo overtakes Microsoft for second place sometime in the next six-nine months -- as long as they keep selling more GC's then XBox's, and some of the new games coming out in the next six months should help (ESPECILY if Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden keep getting delayed.....)

Nice to see the GameCube isn't far behind all the other systems. Only bad thing is how cheap they were, they were practiclly giving them away.

Zach,
I think the Halo #4 might be partly due to the 20 dollar drop in price recently (30 bucks pretty much everywhere now) as much as the fact that it remains the only "must own if you have the system" game of this generation. There are many GC owners without Metroid and PS2 owners without GTA3, but everyone I know with an Xbox owns Halo.

Unless you're like mea nd just waited for the PC versions of Halo and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. :D
(Yes, I'm a cheap bastard.)

I think that perhaps Nintendo would have sold more units if they had more units to ship. I haven't seen a new GameCube on the shelf of any store that I've gone into. I was actually at the mall yesterday, and between two game stores, two music stores that carry games and KayBee, I didn't see one 'Cube. All of the same stores had both XBox and PS2 systems ready for purchase.

Another reason for Halo's sell-through is that two of the largest electronics retailers, Best Buy and Circuit City had it on Black Friday sale at $19.99 each I believe.

Yeah, that probably helps. I usually dislike FPSes, but the $20 price on BF at Circuit City and being able to order it online made me do it.

Microsoft is allready losing as much money on their console as Nintendo is on theirs -- I just don't see how they can justify doing another price drop, though, at LEAST not until Sony does. And Sony just might do one at some point this year, especily if their sales keep failing to meet their goals (although they still seem to be selling major units to me.....)
Almost 20 million GBA's? That's pretty scarry. @_@

Nintendo is not behind as much as I thought, I know in Japan they are DESTROYING the box. It is sad to think the Zelda bundle didn't do as well as they thought it was going to do. On the same note, I feel sorry for Xbox owners being left out in the cold for exclusive games. Hell, even Knights and Halo arent exclusive anymore(PC) You bring up some great things Zach, about origional titles and concepts. If the creative juices are dead on this current batch of sytstems, what the heck are these companies going to do for the next generation? You can only milk sequel after sequel for so long. Its like the Police Academy Series....after 4 or 5 they loose all of the shine. I think this next year's numbers will put into perspective who is going to continue, and who is going to bow out. It also will show if creativity is going to hurt the market, or if people are gamed out with sequels. My vote is that both Nintendo and Xbox will at least be in it for another generation, and I suspect that one of them will go the way of Sega. Either way this next year is going to be a year of recession of console sales...at least in my opinion.

Actually I was pretty sure that Nintendo halted production of the GameCube. I rember reading it somewhere, or maybe it was just a rumor.

Interesting statistics. Amusingly enough, I own not ONE EA game, nor Halo for my XBox, nor GTA3 (of any sort) for either XBox or PS2. Also intriguing is the fact that there are almost no new original franchises coming out at all lately. Even the new games I've gotten, very few are not sequels. The only two that aren't sequels I've bought at all lately are Disgaea and Viewtiful Joe. I think I don't fit most of the statistics well. I'm a minority demographic! :(

DING DING DING! We have a winner! At least in my personal experience (at Circuit City) I haven't seen that many new gamecubes come in. As a matter of fact, the Indigo changes have changed in price from $99.99 to $99.95, which isn't noticeable until you realize that different numbers at CC always mean we aren't getting more of an item in (.96 at the end of a price tag means it's clearance or discontinued as well, .99 is the only "stable" number as far as I know). I don't think even Nintendo counted on selling as many Gamecubes as they did over Christmas, which still wasn't enough it seems. One other thing that seems few and far between now are the memory cards, we sell out as soon as we get them in...I can't imagine what it'd be like if Nintendo had stayed the path of the (godawful) 59's.

Oh there's still originality in game design, unfortunatly we have alot of lemmings who buy games, the same games (madden, etc). I have only one EA game and its NBA Street Vol 2. Its what NBA Jam wished it could've been. Now do these numbers include copies bought by Blockbuster etc?
You know I wonder how many PS2's were multiple sales do to crappy design?

as a retail monkey I have to concur with the lack of gamecubes. We went without GCN systems for two weeks during the holiday season. I imagine if we had a surplus of them we could have sold another 40 or so, easy. I think Nintendo was caught off guard with how much the Zelda bundle would sell. This has to have been a cautious error on their part, cutting back production in case it failed, only to have it slap them in the face.
It depresses me that XBOX is doing so well, but it doesn't really matter. In fact, if Microsoft became a video-game only company I'd be happier than if they got out of the VG market and worked just on windows. At least then I wouldn't have to worry about my OS of choice being declared illegal in the US
