Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. Anyways, i'm looking to by a system and CD system bundle, but I have some questions before I make a purchase.

1) How does saving games work? Does it take memory cards, or is there some kinda of on-board saving?

2) How does the CD system work? Do you plug it into the back, or are there cables? I read somewhere that it requires some card to enable it, that's now hard to find.

Well to answer #1, it doesn't have memory cards. can't recall if the First CD expansion had a battery backup for saving, but the Turbo Duo(a combination Turbo Grafx, CD, and Super CD) does have a battery backup to handle saves.

#2. the first CD came with a system 2.0 card which essetially added some memory to the original TG-16 so that is could handle CD games. If you wanted to play super CD games you had to purchase the system 3.0 card(which is the expensive one). The Turbo Duo had this card built into the system, and does not require any cards to play CD or super CD games

hope this helps

If you're looking to play CD games on the TG-16, it would prolly be best to pick up a Turbo Duo.

As stated, you're better off with a Duo...avoids all the hassles, but:

1. The docking station that both the system and the CD player fit into has a backup internal memory. There are no memory cards and the system doesn't hold a lot (though there are Jp memory cards if you have a Jp system).

2, You must buy a TG16 docking station which came with the CD unit when you bought it new. The TG16 fits into the docking station, and the CD unit plugs into a separate port on top of the TG16. Then you plug the whole thing in through the docking station and use the AV ports in the back of the docking station.

Hope that answers your questions!

Docking station?

Ok ok.. hold up..

This thing here on my table is called a turbobooster PLUS...
the reason they have a booster and booster plus is because
the booster plus can save a game, and the regular booster cant, the booster
just gives you A/V abillity.

Ok i just sold this piece here, so dont ask if its for sale but...
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hu6800/detail?.dir=/games&.dnm=tg16.jpg
This is the Turbografx 16 attatched to a CDRom system.
it comes stock with a 2.0 card and can save your game .
it also adds AV abillity.
If you add a 3.0 card or Arcade card you are pretty much all set.
I prefere this setup over the duo.

These here are what you call a DUO (left) and Duo R (right)
(dont ask, both are sold)
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hu6800/detail?.dir=/VIDEOGAMES&.dnm=mine+mine+mine.jpg
They come stock with 3.0 bios... And its pretty much an all in one unit.
They come with A/V cables .. if you wanna use an RF refere to my sale
pictures .. anyways..
The duo R has an advantage over the turboduo...
answere,, you can play GAMESEXPRESS cart games .

Older duo's are prone to breakin down.
but if you get one that works you be all set.

but wait, im not done yet.
This is my supergrafx hooked up to a cdrom system...
it will also save games, plays supergrafx, hucard and games express...
you can modify it to play american carts to with a single wire and a cart converter.
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hu6800/detail?.dir=/VIDEOGAMES&.dnm=MySG.jpg
If you can get this setup , your better off than the next Duo fan.

I dont even wanna get into this lol...
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hu6800/detail?.dir=/VIDEOGAMES&.dnm=I+already+sold+it.jpg

They also sell mem save adaptors for the coregrafx and pcengine,
and mem cards like the tennoeko bank.
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hu6800/detail?.dir=/Yahoo!+Photo+Album&.dnm=cards.jpg
I still have a tennoeko bank for sale.

If you really wanna get funky,,,
(i dont have this cdrom add on anymore)
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hu6800/detail?.dir=/Yahoo!+Photo+Album&.dnm=46d3.jpg
you can do it this way...
this is the flagship of setups right here.
it will save your games, has AV, plays supergrafx carts..
all you need is an arcade card pro and your all set.

PRETTY MUCH HOW IT WORKS...

You plug the system into the wall,, you plug the AV or RF into the tv
and you turn it on.
if you have ever used a sega cd, then you would figure these machines out.
just remember what cd system came out first in japan (sorry sega) haha.

However, the Turbobooster Plus can NOT work with a US CD unit. It's only for the few compatible games for the TG16. For the US CD system, you have to go the docking station route. As hu pointed out, there are a LOT of other options when it comes to PCE/TG16 hardware though :D

Ok, so the Turbo Duo plays both HuCards, CDs, and SCDs? What about imports? Is there any kind of region lock?

A turbo duo can play import CD's and Super CD's, it can't play inport Arcade CD's though as that requires an Arcade card which was Japan only and Japan Hu-Cards are not playable on a US Duo without a converter(which is usually pretty pricey)

Ok... after reading all this and getting confused as all get out, I'm seriously rethinking my plans to collect TG16 stuffs. I've never seen so many clones and add-ons and whatnot. Good grief... and I used to think Sega was screwy.

For simplicities sake, just get a turbo duo with a japanese card convertor. That means less stuff to get a headache with.

The Jap converter is expensive though.

Get a Japanese Duo. Almost all of the good Hu-card games are Japanese, and US as well as Jap CD games work on a Duo. If you really want to play US Hu-card games you can always pick up a dirt cheap US TG-16 as well.

Here is a good history of PC Engine/TG with photos:
