View Full Version : Apple II biggest software library for 8-bit computers?
I just read on the message board about biggest game libraries, eg for PSX, NES, C-64, VCS.
In EG from 1985 (when it was renamed) I read that the Apple II boasts 15.000 disc titles (from 1977 to 1985). Assuming the Apple II was going up to 1990, can we add another 5000? Making it a total of 20.000.
Of course, the IBM will beat it now with 100.000 titles and counting...(well, ok not really 8-bit!!!)

Where did the C64 place? It's gotta be up there too! I thought it was in the 15,000 range as well??
The article in EG was an Apple special.

GB64 are already up to 16k for the C64, and there's still plenty more out there they haven't gotten, so it could be rather close...

Man I gotta think the C64 would win that, just a gut feeling though.

I'm a little skeptical that the Apple II would have more software than the c64. The C64 did much better in Europe and South America than the Apples. When the Soviet Union collapsed it was the C64 that invaded the ex Soviet bloc countries with it's low tech and low cost. The Apple II released in 1977. The II line was retired with the IIE in 1993 and the IIGS in 1992 (which was not 100% Compatible with the II). The C64 ran from 1982 to 1993 and sold 22 million units a record I haven't heard beaten by any other particular computer model. I was not able to find any total for C64 software sales. Digitalpress indicates there are 12,000 titles. Some of the C64 emulator sellers and sites indicate between 15,000 and 18,000. Anyone got concrete numbers?
