I've heard of a downloadable boot-disc file called Utopia - will this allow me to play imports (JAP/US) on my PAL console, or is there something better?

That one is fine, I use the DC-X myself. You can also use the Game Shark and one other disc too, but I can't recall the name.

What's the Utopia like compatibility-wise? Are there some odd games that won't work - or will it do everything?

I've never used Utopia myself, but the DC-X will do the trick ($5 new at gamestop) and I personally use a Game Shark.

I think most of the boot discs will work with nearly all of the games. So far, I have never had my DC-X not work on a game. I believe only a few titles for the JPN system will not work no matter what disc you use. Oh... and a few PAL games don't work either, but you don't have to worry about that. ;)

Check the import forum for the "convertors" thread, it could help.

Unfortunately, we don't have that chain of stores here. :|

Plus, new Dreamcast software (and hardware) hasn't been available in this country for about two years now.

I tried the Gameshark Lite to boot my PAL copy of Rez and it wouldn't work when I tried the swap. Then, I tried my GS Cheats & Codes Vol. 1 disc and it worked perfectly. Tips & Tricks Magazine suggested the C & C disc in its May 2002 issue, so there you go.

Also, why can't anyone post a link to the Utopia site? I asked about where I could download the boot disc last week and no one replied...

Go back and read the original thread, dude. I copied your question and replied...

"www.dcemulation is where you will find the Utopia Boot download, as well as other various and sundry goodies. So easy to run Japanese games, and the few PAL games I've tried, too, like Evil Twin and Headhunter"
