Question on buried items

Ok, every once in a while I'll see a message on the bulletin board about an item being buried in a particular area. I've been trying to find these but no luck. Are there any particular markings on the ground I should look for (like the "cracks" where fossils are usually located) or do I have to dig up every square inch of land?

every item that my town folk have hidden for me ( golf, and mario trophie) have been found under the crack type things like fossiles, and gyroids.

Sometimes you have to cut down trees to see them. Somethimes they are buried behind structures.
