I got this link in my email to sign an online petition about Gamestop not selling retro games. Gamestop will obviously take this with a grain of salt, but it is important to voice your opinions to companies. Heres the link to sign if you want. http://www.petitiononline.com/cgamers/petition.html

Wow. When did this happen. This is bullcrap.

Eh, I don't know. Seems like the fewer stores that buy back old games and sell them again after a markup, the more old games that get sold at garage sales and flea markets to us.

I'm all for Gamestop NOT selling em. I agree with Dahne.

"Petitions never work, but as a Classic game collector, I would rather you not get rid of them. I'm keeping you in business."

Meh. Petitions never work. If they did, I'd be playing Earthbound 64 right now.

Awww...that's cute.

I hesitate to do a "+1" but I just have to say that you're a cynical bastard Dr, and I like it. :D

I agree with you more often than not.

I'm not sure how it is everywhere else but the stores around me have their own policies on this. For example one store is getting rid of everything listed above, but another one is only getting rid of genesis and dreamcast. I'm not sure why this is, maybe each store is only keeping those systems that have sold well for them. So check the stores near you and you might luck out.

What the fuck. That is absurd and idiotic beyond measure. 99.999% of what I've bought at a GameStop or one of their other named stores has been classic. When I say classic, I mean '16-bit or earlier', and I know I am not alone. GameStop is going to lose a LOT of business over this, and they just lost one of the few shreds of respect I had left for them. Apparently they're also ditching Dreamcast games? So what's to keep them from giving PSX, N64 and GBC games the boot?

It's sickening. Despite that 99% of modern games are awful, rushed pieces of garbage that no one will remember in a few years, but GameStop is working to push the good ones out of the public eye to make more money selling more expensive items.

Sick, sick, sick.
I officially hate GameStop.

yea, the gamestops around here have signs up that 2/22/04 is the last day they will buy back NES, SNES, Genesis, and Dreamcast games. they said they will still sell off their remaining stock, but they're just not taking it in anymore.

I agree with you that this is a strange move for Gamestop, seeing that the business they're in is buying and reselling used games. At my store, this is a pretty large market and I hate to see it go, but I also know that the retro business is a very small fraction of the business. Trying to make room for the future business of Xbox 2, PS3, and Nintendo's new stuff, but 1-3 years prior seems a little premature.

Maybe someone will trade in some really great, complete games before the end. And who will be there to swoop down on them, ME!! :D

Swoop down on what, a New-in-Box Mario 3 for $99.99? No thanks, I don't need those kinds of marvelous GameStop-style deals. No sir.

$100 for SMB 3? Where the hell do you shop? Just like on Ebay, if you look hard enough, you'll find some great deals.

Even if you don't believe it, people know. Whether its EB, GS, GC, flea markets, whatever, deals are to be found.

I welcome this new change. Should make things more interesting in the hunt. My +1 agrees with Dahne.

Stop living in the goddamn past... How bout this.. Dont shop at gamestop anymore if it pisses you off that much.
Go somewhere else instead.

Gamestop is only moving along with the times.. You cant blame them for that. If you didnt buy all the games WHEN they came out and held on to them its your own damn fault.

As long as Gamestop is so preoccupied with updating their image by phasing out their classic inventory, maybe they can do something about updating all their shop signs to the new red/white/black logo? I still get a little chortle every time I visit the older GS's in town, which still have the PS1/N64 motif stuff on the signs. It's almost as if they were saying, "These consoles are the end-all and be-all of gaming". Pretty ironic when you consider how annoyed the clerks look when you try and trade in PS1 or N64 stuff. The whole thing just looks pretty weak to me LOL

GAMESTOP sucks, I agree. But they suck in the same way Starbucks or McDonald's do: They're everywhere, but sometimes there's just nowhere else to go.

I have 2 game shops in town. One is a smaller shop that will remain nameless. One is a GameStop.

In the smaller shop, everything you GLANCE at gets you an evil eye from the shopowner, an angry, rude, spiteful man who reminds me tremendously of the lead terrorist hijacker from Executive Decision. MegaDrive games are $2.99 for "sports titles". $9.99 for "non-sports titles". Policies change arbitrarily. If you want it, it is a "non-sports title". If you don't, it's a sports title. All non-sports titles aren't $9.99, they're $24.99, and that's the same price with or without a box, now stop asking. We can change our prices on the spot, because we're better than you. Now stop staring at the merchandise. Don't look at that! You can't see it! It's on the shelf! I disorganized it myself so you couldn't see it without sifting through a huge pile of garbage to find what you want. Besides, even if you DO ask them to see something, they'll stare at you like you're going to grab it and run. Everything is overpriced. They buy things for 10% their value to GameStop's 40-50%.

The shopkeepers are geniuses. They make statements like:
"I know what I am selling!!! I know what I doing!!!" .. despite that he was WRONG about MegaDrive processor types.
"Genesis is 20 year old!! IT IS RELIABLE!!! IT CANNOT BREAK."
"No one buy Sega CD game! It worth $1!"
"No one buy 32x game! It is worth nothing!"

He also scratches his crotch in plain view of the customers, before handing you your merchandise. That's .. really pleasant, lemme tell ya.

Compare that to a GameStop where the games cost their proper value, maybe a LITTLE bit more. Trade-in values are decent, sometimes good. The sales staff is couteous most of the time. Take your pick and you'll see WHY I'm pissed that from now on, when I want a retro game and don't want to pay shipping fees from eBay and sellers, I'll have to go to the Fascist Game Shop From Hell.

I applaud you for the effort but to be honest, I wont sign it because I like gamestop. I've found some absolutely amazing finds there. If you want to repetition that their prices reflect the DP price guide, I'm all for it.

but just my 2 cents, I like having places that I can actually handle my purchases before I buy.

whoa poor poor gamestop they lost 99.999% of your business. honestly how will they survive as a company? In case you haven't realized Gamestops and their ilk tend to favor the casual gamer, and most casual gamers aren't the packrats that we are, they tend to trade up to newer systems and what not. So frankly it would be in their best interest to keep their stores geared towards their demographics. As for the more dedicated gamers like we are here, we all have our own spots where we can still find the classic games we want...and hey there's always ebay.

by the way no one forces you to play these so called "modern" games, they're not putting a gun to your head man.

but as for the petition I would sign but I just got a call from the GAMESTOP that I shop at that the pelican lightrifle for silent scope came in...so no thank you

back to gamestop not selling classics...not a big deal often times the older stuff doesn't come complete, I'd rather be building the psx stuff anyways (like a very sweet complete castlevania sotn I picked up at EB yesterday for 20 bucks).
