What systems did you not like until much later, due to fanboyitis or just not playing them at the time?

For me the first is the NES, having played my Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 at the time. I thought the NES had too many super mario bros clones at the time (I always liked Zelda though). But now I'm finding a lot more NES games fun to play...

Second are the SNES and Genesis. I was heavy into Amiga at the time, and I thought there were a small number of good games for both, but a lot of crap as well. I'll bet I'll find more good stuff for these systems as well.

Third is the Playstation 2. I was bummed that Dreamcast had an early death and the Playstation 2 just didn't live up to the hype for me until ICO.

So what systems took you a while to warm up to?

the genesis, mainly because I didn't own one during that time frame...yet somehow I own like 4 of them. damn you mutant league sports and toejam and earl. but other than that it was a matter of owning them before appreciating them

For me, it was the Genesis. I was such a Nintendo fanboy back in the 80's and 90's that I considered Sega to be the Devil. I never admitted to anyone that I liked Sonic and Toejam & Earl though... when I was able to play Genesis at my cousin's house.

I despised Sega so much, that I convinced three of my family members to buy a SNES when all three of them had their hearts set on getting a Genesis. I would invite them over to my house and show them all my SNES games, give them the specs of each system, and of course, raise the issue of sound effects and music... which were TONS better on SNES thanks to that superior sound chip.

So yeah, I really had it in for the Genesis back in the day. I grew out of it when the Playstation was released tho. I realized that video games were going the way of the dodo as far as quality was concerned, so I embraced Sega... especially when I bought a Dreamcast. Today, I have 3 Genesis's, but still just the one SNES. Even tho I'll always love the SNES more than anything, I finally have a special place in my heart for Genesis, and consider Sega right up there with Nintendo. It's a shame Sony had to take over. I miss REAL video game companies.

Well, I'm REALLY warming up to the Saturn right now that I have a JP one, there seem to be SO many great Japanese games rather than the paltry US selection we got... now to get an Action replay to play the few US games I'd want :)

The Dreamcast. I didnt really begin to appreciate the system until 2003, despite owning one before. Fire Pro D, Garou, Mars Matrix, Ikaruga own my ass. I have more games for it now than my PS2 and is becoming my favorite disc based system.

Cool question Ben,

For me it's the Dreamcast. Even though I had one reserved and got it on launch day (9/9/99) remember, anyways I got about 6 of their lauch titles. I bought about 5 more games over the next year and then about 6-10 months before gamecube was about to come out it's like I just stopped playing for some reason. I just HATED my dreamcast. I got rid of everything dreamcast. My brother ended up buying one, and I made fun of him for having it, even though I had one, and spent 100's more in $ than him.

ANYWAYS, about 6 months ago, I was looking on ebay and saw all these awesome games that were out that I didn't even know came out. Right know I have about 3 times as many games as I did, and give the dreamcast alot of credit, and LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I guess what really made me mad was that right before the DC came out, I was telling everyone how great it was and stuff, and then it last for like 2 years and Sega throws in the towel pretty much all together. Oh well, SEGA still rocks in my book! 8-)

either the NES or maybe the Sarun!

Neo Geo.

Besides being really fun to say (go ahead, say "Neo Geo" out loud in a high-pitched voice right now. I dare you!), it's also expensive as $5 Big Macs. Therefore, I have never been able to fully enjoy it... Until one day, I got a bunch of quarters and hit the arcade. The End!

Maybe, I'll have an MVS one day... Who knows?

The only two that really fit the question for me are the Genesis and the Dreamcast. I am and was always a big Nintendo guy, so I didn't buy a Genesis when it came out. I did however spend a decent amount of time with it since my cousin owned it. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think much of it compared to my SNES. Two years ago was the first time I actually bought my own, and I've found a lot of games that I enjoy. The Dreamcast I actually only played once or twice 4 years ago...my freshman year at college. I picked one up last year and I am certainly enjoying it so far.

For me, it's Genesis and Xbox.

I only owned 2 games for the Genesis back in the day: Sonic and X-Men. I was lucky to have the system at all, but those two remained lost under the bed for years until they got traded in. Last year, I got 2 Genesis 2's and about 40 games from yard sales and thrifts, and now I need more games.

As for Xbox, I was a Nintendo fanboy who bought the 'Cube during the first wave of the next-gen wars. Needless to say, when I discovered that most of the Sega's DC franchises were going to the Xbox, I had to get one. The system continues to wow me with good-looking titles that play well (Otogi, Deathrow, Counter-Strike, etc.). Now, I can't live without experiencing custom soundtrack support at least once a day.

Also, if I hadn't sold my Turbografx-16 in high school, I might be enjoying that one right now... :(

Simply put.

Any system that was not a Nintendo system.

Pretty much all of Sega's lineup, ironically who is now one of my favorite developers. I had been a Nintendo fanboy up until I realized the N64 wasn't that great (which was a little bit after the Saturn died in the states). After that, I ragged on the Dreamcast - speaking of how it was destined for failure due to the PS2 just around the corner etc. etc., though I was right - I have unforgivably sinned against the Dreamcast and Sega. Now I'm pretty much a Sega fanboy and go out of my way to buy their games....well, not really a fanboy, I don't pretend that their games are the best out there or anything ridiculous like that...I think more likely I'm feeling some serious guilt for having anything to do with killing off Sega's consoles.
Heh.

One kid in my entire town had an SMS instead of a NES. One day, I went over to his house and played it for a while and laughed my ass off. My experience was so bad that I trash-talked that system for the rest of the 8-bit years and didn't give it a second chance until my collecting/gaming renassaince. Now I'm loving it, but I've found that the worst games on this system are truly bottom-of -the-barrel games.

Playstation, kinda.

Back in '97 I was going to trade my SNES (shut up, I was in 6th grade) for a Nintendo 64. But the store was sold out...so I settled for a Playstation instead. What a close call that was, eh?

CDi for sure. Some people argue that there's no point warming up to it because of so much crap. But I think it's got the best version of Tetris out there, Hotel Mario is very fun to play, Voyeur is great, and I've been playing the heck outta Connect Four and Battleship on it as hard as that is to believe.

Second place nods to 3DO. Star Control II almost validates the whole system by itself but ports of Alone in the Dark and Out of this World only add icing on the cake. It took me awhile to come around to Space Hulk, Slayer, and Deathkeep. Twisted and Zhadnost are great party games too.

I have to deduct points for WotW though. Ugh.

Third goes to Sega CD. Horrible initial line-up. Saved by third party brilliance. Other than the WD games, Heimdall, Snatcher, Panic!, Dungeon Explorer, Heart of the Alien, and Secret of Monkey Island are top tier. Sega's Sonic CD and Eternal Champions are stellar too. Mansion of Hidden Souls was underrated. And, god help me, the Mortal Kombat video always makes me smile.

Everyone should own a Saturn though. Loved mine from day one and it only got better. The Shmup gamers platform of choice!

Must be the Mega Drive (Genesis), i was 100% Nintendo. I loved my SNES, don't even looked at Sega stuff because i thought it where all cheap, fast action games. Years later a friend hired a MD and for the first time i played serious on a Sega console. I had to admit that i liked Sonic and Ecco for those 2 days ... bought myself a MD, but after a few weeks i didn't play it anymore and sold it. Sega sucks (the evil plumber had brainwashed me ;)).
And now, 6-7 years later i have it back, now i like it. Sega and Nintendo are standing together on my console shelf. What i like most on Sega now is that they had the guts to do something different like the MegaCD and 32X. I even like some games on this machine although i don't play my consoles very often (i like the collecting part).
But SNES is still number one :)

Second is another Sega console, the Game Gear. When Gameboy and Game Gear where hot i had to choose between those two. The color screen was cool but where was Mario? Same story as with the Mega Drive and i bought the Gameboy :) When i started collecting one of the first things i wanted to get was a Game Gear and yes it is a good handheld. I don't have any nice games on it, but thats the collecting part again.

And for the 32/64 bit consoles ... i bought a PC after my SNES and i missed that part (to bad). For now i only dislike the Playstation (although i've got a PS1 and PS2) and Microsoft consoles because they don't have the magic that the Nintendo, Sega, Neo-Geo, Atari etc. etc. consoles have, but who knows when we are in 2010 ;)

The PlayStation fits this the best for me.

I really didn't like it due to my fanboy-ism for Nintendo, which started upon the release of the N64.

Funny though, I remember not being sure of whether to get a PSX or N64 at first, and then I few weeks after I got my N64, I was 100% Nintendo fanboy.

And then a couple years ago that stopped, and it's back to normal.

The opposite of this would be the Dreamcast. I played an NTSC a few monts before the PAL release, and I was blown away. I desperately wanted a DC, but never could afford one. The only way I could would've been to trade my N64, but I was far too attached to that anyway.

Again, once I saw that the DC was been cleared out of stores at the end of 2001, I wanted to get one. But, GameCube was only a few months away and I was going to need my parents help purchsing one on launch. So, I couldn't convince them to get me a Dreamcast for Xmas 2001, and then the GameCube in May 2002.

Meh, I got one anyway. Just a little later than I wanted (Jan 2003).

It took me a long time to warm up to the Sega Master System. Long ago when I had jumped onto the NES platform (and became member# 148,427 in the Mushroom Army) I traded some D&D books and some NES games for a SMS. It sounded interesting and it seemed cool from the demos I played at Kohls. When I got it the system was underwhelming in the game play area (I think I only had Alex Kid in Miracle World and Fantasy Zone: The Maze) So for the longest time I let the system sit in the big knick knack cabinet I used as a TV stand disconnected.

It wasn't until I heard about a little game called Phantasy Star. There was a page ad in EGM that showed off the graphics and my jaw dropped. I didn't have any SMS game that looked like that plus I didn't run into any RPGs I liked on the NES. I was able to score one from an ad in the paper for something like $25. Too cool. By that time I had moved to Elkhart Lake and one of the students in my class was a big SMS nut (and had rich parents). I was able to check out games like Shinobi, Afterburner, Govellius and more. The video store in Plymouth RENTED the games so I could try out even more. I played that system to death for like a year but interest started tapering off after the Genesis and Super Mario 3 came out. I would later jump back into it when I snagged 3D glasses for $10 but eventually I sold it off and never looked back.

EDIT: HA HA HA I thought the title was "What GAMES did you not like until much later." Bah...sorry. Read my rant anyway! :)

Legacy of the Wizard.

Man, oh, man did I try to like this game...it was so HUGE and I had no idea how to progress....never had a map appeared until the last couple years (online), and the game's password feature SUCKS!!! WHY couldn't they just make a save file? Expense, I'm sure.

I sorta rant about it in this thread:
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27756&highlight=legacy+wizard

But I'll jusst recap it for you:

Legacy of the wizard is actually a very good game if you canget the hang of it....it took me about 10 years. The hardest part is figuring out what order to do each person's quest in. I think it's pet, girl, mom, dad, boy (I forget their names). I think pet is lower right from dragon, girl is upper right, mom is lowerleft and dad is upper left. Boy just goes and gets the sword in the girl's area using warps in the lion heads and beats the last boss.

LOl. No seriously, play it with infinite health or use save states and I think you'll find LotW has some very good depth and gameplay (then play through it normally now that you'll know what to do)...if it wasn't so easy to die, this game would really shine. Oh, and screw it's password system!!

After I went through the whole game, I had an all new respect for the game. It is actually Dragon Slayer IV (msx, famicom, ?pc88?). Part V is better known as Sorcerian. Part II is known as ROmancia (MSX, famicom, ?pc88?). I forget the others now, but there's a crapload of them, plus spin offs.

-Rob

So yeah, LotW is GREAT if you can get the hang of it. It's not impossible as many people think. And it is a hell of a lot of fun once you get the hang of things. Give it a shot people. You will get to experience some fine-ass Falcom music...some of the best the NES has to offer.

Unfortunately I have many horror stories of "why did I trade/sell that, I will never forgive myself!" and this is but a sample of the terrible decisions that I made as an inexperienced gamer and collector.
Way back in early '91 I trade a whole bunch of Sega Genesis games for a complete TURBOGRAPHIX-16 with legendary axe one and two bonk and a couple others all great classic turbo games. (that was the good, now for the bad).
I liked the system and thought legendary axe etc were very cool games but I only kept the system and games for like 3 months then sold all of it for like a paltry 60$.
I have now decided that an overflow of hormones had, at the time ,made me a COMPLETE idiot because I now have such fond memories of the turbo I have been looking for one with games for the last 5 years and have never found a "complete" system that included cords etc.

I still don't really like the Atari 2600...I'm sure this will change one of these days when I sit down with the thing and start playing it :)

I suppose I've started to like the PS2 recently...when it's not "stealing" game titles from the graphically superior XBox and GameCube (though to be fair the GC's disc format counteracts that to some degree), and I've recently committed myself to getting one along with Onimusha 3 someday.
