OK, I remember sme more, there was supposedly a way to get 'PIKABLU' All you had to do was talk to that girl who said that her boyfriend was getting her a pikachu. Then, give her pikachu. Next, she will be out back in the dumpster. She will say "I's evolving, but not cute anymore." It would turn into pikablu and u would get it.
Another is the one about Seaman for Dreamcast. Someone on the interweb claimed to have had it for so long in japan that it turned into a human. Of course, it's a hoax because the highest is frogman, which lives on it's own. Pretty good one, it had me and my brother until we both figured out i wasn't true. I'll find pic.s if possible. It might be true.......I still believe it just a little.
One more straight from my school. My friends who love Resident Evil (Me too :D ) say that n apan they were tired of just regular Biohazard games. So, they created (supposedly) Biohazard: The Monkey Virus. It's totally bogus but they say that they replaced zombies with monkeys, the monkey virus instead of the T & G viruses, and made sniffers, who sniffed coke, instead of lickers. Like I said, totally bogus!!

Well, I have one for Metroid for the NES. There is a part of the map that you have to bomb up and through a door in order to get to. In order to complete the task you have to have high jump, bomb, and the thing that lets you duck into a ball. It's really pretty cool but it takes a lot of patience just like the -minus world in SMB. I remember someone documenting the "lost portions" of metroid but can't remember the website. It was really hard to move around because a lot of the level had pits that you would get stuck in and you would have to start all over again. I remember using nesticle to do this a few years ago.
I still have trouble convincing people that this is true then I go through all the trouble of playing the game and then they "see the light".
I also remember the MK rumors and hoaxes. I remeber in the genesis version of MK, there was a shadow character or something that you could fight on the pit level. I think that they put it in there based on all the rumors that were flying around about the arcade version.
I also have played the -minus world of SMB many times and have got all the coins and you simply run out of time. There is no other minus world unless you use the game genie or something to change to level numbers.
Great thread!
When I had first got a SNES my step dad told me that they showed a thing on the news that claimed that video games caused brain cancer. He told me that to get me to quit playing vid games ... it didn't take.
What I am curious about though is if this was ever on the news or if he was being an ass ... so did anybody ever see anything like that on the news?

there was a rumor in my neighborhood that on super mario bros that if you jumped the flag pole that you got to go to the "chocolate factory" but my older brother bought a game genie and proved it wasn't true, it was crushing, I blame him for my messed up life
I know of one hoax that was true the pokemon red/blue version there was a glichimon or somthing to that effect. All I really remember was that when you found it on some island that it looked like a bunch of random textures and if it was cought it would bug out the game. Im pretty shure nintendo power ran an article about it. I l look it up and tell more in a furture post.

I remember in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! Someone had claimed to be able to defeat Tyson with an NES Zapper. He attempted to prove it to me and I fell for it. I was so gullible, I should have realized his zapper wasn't even plugged in.

Okay.
The "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" rumor was something like this... At least it was something like this around my elementary school...
In the crowd, there's a character with sunglasses. I'm sure there are a few characters with sunglasses, but this trick involved one down near the ring.
Anyway, upon reaching Iron Mike, the player would have to enter a code.
Upon entering this code, the crowd member with the sunglasses would stand up, draw a gun, and, you guessed it...
...shoot Mike Tyson.
All this would somehow end up with the player successfully beating the game. No murder charges, no nothing... Just the heavyweight championship of the world.
Needless to say...
Most.
Retarded.
Rumor.
Ever.

(didn't read whole thread, so I don't know if its been mentioned yet)
I know there are a ton of urban legends for Harvest Moon 64. A ton. Secret people, secret events, secret cutscenes, 2nd photo album, rick's teleporter actually working, rick giving you a firefly lantern, characters dying, your son growing up, etc etc etc.
There also many many many Zelda: Ocarina of time legends. Entire sites are devoted to them. We've all heard the million ways to get the triforce, and the million other rumors...
Perhaps the biggest one of all is that there was a way to play as the bosses (Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison) in the origion Street Fighter II for the SNES. In fact, many people to this day still insist it is a well hidden code, because you can play as them with a Game Genie. So therefor, they say, there must be a way to unlock the code. Comments guys?

"Yes, Nintendo did explore that option but it wasn't "handed to Atari on a silver platter". Anyone who thinks that it was has never been involved in any major corporate negotiation of this type. Discussions never got anywhere near to a point where Nintendo wanted Atari to sign and Atari outright passed."
Well, Howard Lincoln and Arakawa don't see to agree with you. It's been pretty well documented in several interviews that this was indeed the case. Nintendo offered Atari right to manufacture the Famicom (excluding jpn.), negotiations took place, with Yamauchi empowering Arakawa (with Lincoln as attorney) to work the deal. The deal fell apart at the 11th hour. You can read the details in Game Over, The Last Quarter, or several other game history books.

How about the old Urban Legend where you could get Link to join your party in Super Mario RPG, anyone heard of that one before, or the Legend that you could get a character named Luna in the genesis version of the original Mortal Kombat, or the legend where there was a code where Scorpion would shoot his spear and say "Get the F**k over here" that one ran rampant at that games launch.

Some people claimed that if you got Guile's "handcuffs" to work in SFII, that it was the first part of an easter egg. If you did some stick/button combo, you could then make him pull a gun out of his boot and shoot the other character in the head.
Anybody remember that???

I don't know, but in SSBM on GCN, when you have a look around your 'room', there is a Super Famicom with cartridge in it.
The cartridge label is the Japanese box-art for SSBM.
I think some people have seen this and gone - "ooooh!!! SSB on teh Super Famicom OMG!!"
Reminds me of the Saturn Ryo Hazuki has in Shenmue - in 1986. LOL

A friend of mine swore - SWORE - that in the last scene of Dragon's Lair, when Dirk is unlocking Daphne's Prison Bubble, if you hit the "Sword" button, Dirk would break the key, the dragon was resurrected, and Dirk would be eaten - Game Over. He swore he did it a few times too.
This never made it as a global videogame rumor, but everyone in town had heard it and knew it. Thing is, once someone got to the Dragon's Lair final scene, no one wanted to "commit suicide " at the end, so no one ever proved or disproved this tale.

i'm not sure if this is part of the rumor, but...
long ago, while playing FF3 on the snes, i was fighting in the lair beneath figaro where you come upon raiden and so forth. i think it was in the earthy cave part of the dungeon and not the ruins. i was trying to perfect relm's fake mustache technique and somehow right around that moment something weird happened and one of my characters was turned into general leo. i think he even did his sword's special movie once before i freaked out and reset the game. i've heard this can only happen on the snes version, and not the playstation edition.

Purple Nurples!
Anyway, for SMB there are sctualy tons and tons of levels you can unlock with a game genie, some of them minus worlds. I heard there may be one or 2 more that you can unlock without GG., but that could be --surprise, urban legend.
As for the PC Engine Hu card of Dracula X, I was under the impression this was true. I vaguely remember that it didn't have the CD music that would have taken far too much memory. I heard there were like 2, not 6, but whatever.
Flack, about the ET landfill thing, you mentioned that you thought this was true, and not urban legend. But remember, just because it's urban legend, doesn't always mean it is false. :)
Luigi in Mario 64....he was supposed to be in there and you can find him by disecting some of the code in the game, but he is not unlockable and was thrown away...he is in the cart though, it just takes some hacking, as I remember it.
The Metroid Secret Worlds are clearly explained, documented and mapped on the Metroid Database: http://www.classicgaming.com/mdb/m1/index.htm
They are glitches and are actually in more than one Metroid game.

I never played MK myself (anything with more than 1 button and a joystick isn't really my speed), but I used to watch people play it all the time and, yes, they would try to get a nude fatality. Never did. I think it may have been MK2, but it was definitely BS. I was thinking of this the other day after reading the joyshtick column about Dragon's Lair and The Naked Princess.
I think the best video game urban legend would be that a bunch of '80s programmers became MTF transsexuals.
Oh, wait. That's true.... :eek 2:

One more thing I just remembered about MK. Remember Jade in MK II? I remember fighting her in the arcade and it said, "Now Prepare to Fight an Undiscovered Warrior from MK I!"
Also, one of the characters' friendship said, "I've never seen a Kano transformation."
I also knew several people who said that the game allowed you to feed your opponent to the tree with a mouth, but I personally never saw that move. They said also that every level in MK 2 had a fatality, from the Tower to the Pit to the Armory, where allegedly you would pick up a sword or axe and use it to finish you opponent.

There's also the urban legend about one of the woman fighters in Killer Instinct 64. For a taunt, she pulls back her shirt and faces her opponent, bearing all. The player, of course, only sees the back of her.
... Well, I've never even played the crappy game, personally. Who knows? Maybe the urban legend is actually true.
I dunno about the N64 version of the game, but in the Super NES and arcade versions of Killer Instinct, Orchid has a finishing move where she unzips her shirt and flashes her opponent. His eyes then bug out and then he falls over dead. It's rather humorous. LOL
So yeah, at least in the original game, that's entirely true. I've done it many many times. My brother and I used to laugh at it all the time years ago. Like I said before tho, I can't remember if it's in the N64 version or not.
Yeah, but isn't there a stage with mirrors in it in KI1? If so, do you see a reflection of what's going on with Orchid's fatality?

With all the Mortal Kombat rumors, I can't believe no one has mentioned Animalities! Back when MKII was at the height of its arcade popularity, everyone I know was trying to figure these out. Supposedly, every character had a fatality that transformed them into an animal. Then they would maul/eat their opponent. There were whole lists of these moves posted on the internet, and my stupid friends and I would throw away tons of quarters trying to make them work. Of course, they never did.
I suppose out of admiration, the creators of the franchise decided to finally make these moves a reality in MK Trilogy. But they were sure inconvenient. You had to perform a Mercy on your opponent before you could do the Animality. I think you may have had to have a flawless at least once in that fight, too. Not sure on that, though.

Remember how in Zelda 2, in order to access the Death Mountain area, you had to get past that giant spider-like monster that was blocking your path on the map?
A movie from the late 80s / early 90s called the Wizard started this bogus runour about how you had to "fight the river devil" in order to progress through the game.

I forgot where I read it but I thought galaga on the nes had a end board. Of course playing that good is very hard. So I use the game genie with codes for infinity lives and a rubberband to keep it firing. I came back 3 or 4 days later it was still going. The score rolled over and was now using triagles to show a larger score. Also the board levels were impossible to really tell where you were really at but it was high.

When I was a kid I liked R.C. Pro-AM alot. I had a friend named Tron and he was very good at Nes games. His family had alot of them and they'd play together. Well, one day he told me he could beat it. He sais that after the cars were Monster Trucks. Then boats and thats the end. I believed him for like 19 years. Then like 2 years ago I got the game Genei and played. I got so far that if you don't shoot that crazy car, you lose.No way to beat this game.Lol.
I also remember when the Genesis came out. They said if you put Altered Beast in, turn on the system wait for the start up screen(not sure if it was the Sega or Altered Beast one)(I think it was when you here the dom dom dom of the Alterd Beast music) then rip the game out without turning it off and quickly put in another game(maybe then press reset?) It would mess up diferent games diferent ways. Sometime in good ways like extra men. I actually remember doing this and it working! I also remember them warning people it could mess stuff up permantly.Guess thats not an urban Legend though? Anyone else do this one?

In a similar vein, there was a rumor that you could fight a character in MKII named Ermac who was a glitched version of Scorpion. The rumor got so big that they actually put Ermac in MKIII.
Luigi in SM64 was a stupidly big rumor, there was a site I visited almost everyday when I was ten years old based on this rumor alone, and there were regular updates on new codes to obtain Luigi. I think after about two years even the owner realized how ridiculous it was getting and pretty much said "yeah these are probably fake, don't waste your time". Last time I tried to visit the site (99/00) it was a Maniac Mansion fanpage.

Here's some I remember:
- There was a short-lived rumor for Final Fantasy VII a few years back that you could turn Tifa into Laura Croft. I don't remember what you had to do to cause the transformation, but supposedly her guns could kill any enemy with one hit (Even bosses)
- There was also a short-lived rumor about a hentai ending to Final Fantasy VII. You had to beat the game 15 times on a single memory card (1 save per playthrough; no copying the file), and after the 15th time, you'd see a secret ending with Cloud and Tifa getting it on.
- Rumors of powerful, ultra-secret characters being hidden in the Super Smash Bros. games have circulated over the internet ever since the original came out. The one I remember the best was the rumor of Wario being hidden in the original SSB; you had to beat the game on Very Hard as Mario (In yellow alternate coloring) in less than 15 minutes, and then Mario will transform into Wario.
- I remember my older cousin tricking me into thinking that the Dragon Forest T.T. Key in Diddy Kong Racing had to be earned; not found like the first 3. He never explained what you needed to do in order to earn it, so I spent nearly 2 years trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do to earn it before I stumbled onto the answer somewhere online and discovered he had lied.
- While on the topic of Diddy Kong Racing, I also remember rumors floating around the internet circa 1998 that you'd get to see a strange ending with Diddy & friends having bacon for breakfast if you beat Adventure Two.

I remember so many of the MK, Pokemon, Tomb Raider rumors it is not even funny. (I even fell for most of them).
In Soul Reaver PSX I was told that if you stayed in the alternate world, where you gathered power, for 5 mins straight without getting hit/hitting anything you would get a special reward. Simply do this then jump die and you would unlock turn into a hidden character.
In Star Wars Shadows of the Empire N64 I was told by beating the game 3 times without dieing you would unlock IG-88 as a fully playable character.
My one friend always insisted that if he found a "hidden ability" in Earth Worm Jim for Genesis that allowed you to play through as only the earth worm head and a gun. He also claimed to have found an upgraded space suit and a suit of armor/sword to replace the usual one.

Polybius is my favorite. Real or not, it's a super cool idea.
You mean the government arcade machine that gave people violent seizures up in Canada? Only in Canada, man. Only in Canada.

Hee. Did you catch the cameo of Polybius on tonight's episode of The Simpsons? It was right next to Triangle Wars.

Scene from "Please Homer, Don't Hammer 'Em," the third episode of The Simpsons’ eighteenth season. (I love the "Property of the U.S. Government" stencil at the base.)

Oh... wow, I remember this. Vaguely.

Urban Legends
the only ones that really come to mind for me is
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time where supposedly in lake hylia theres supposedly a giant sea monster lives in it and you can only see it at a certain time. I tried for hours trying to make this happen and never worked :(
In GTA san andres theres a few urban legends
1 of them if you goto a certain farm and steal a combine tractor you'll be chased by leather face chainsaw and all
in the woods you can come across a big foot
in the desert if you goto a certain peak at a certain time at night a ufo will just hover above you for a lil bit
a certain spot in the ocean you will come across a giant great white shark
and much more

Has anyone ever heard of the one where they said that on Super Street Fighter on 3DO, if you can beat the game without losing any rounds on the hardest difficulty, you can use Mortal Kombat characters in the game? I was so dumb to believe that. But that sure made me a good Street Fighter player getting so much practice trying to beat that game without ever losing.

Anyone hear a rumor for the original Star Fox game for the SNES? According to a friend of mine back in the day, if you kept shooting at Slippy for long enough, he'd start "swearing" at you (stuff like spirals and exclamation points would appear in his text box).
Oh the torment I put Slippy through back then to try and get 'im to do that... not that his useless ass didn't deserve it.

I actually remember my friend Michael Shephard also told me that. Although I can't remember if that's how he said you did it, I just vaguely remember him telling me that something would result in the frog using bad language text.

Someone actually told me and my brother that the Gamecube projected a hologram cube image that you sat inside and were surrounded by the game image to play. We believed him and counted down the days to buy one

Not sure if it's rumor or not, or if anyone else heard this -
When Primal Rage (SNES? NES? too long ago) came out, I was playing at my friend's house and he said there was a way that you could eat the people. I don't remember if we actually did it or not.

You can eat people in the arcade version to gain health, but I'm not sure if that made it into the home versions or not.

That when you catch a pokemon, tapping the A button at the right time makes it automatically catch.
I actually did this, and I am sure I am not the only one!

back when mortal kombat II first came out in the arcades, there was a rumor around here (R.I) of a nudeality for sonya blade. most of us being young teenagers at the time, believed it and tried relentlessly to figure out how to do it. Does this legend sound familiar to anyone, or was it just around here?
I remember that but I'm from Boston, so.....

Damn, it's too bad this was a hoax... I'd love to give it a try. Any game that could give you amnesia and horrible nightmares must be one hell of a game!

There's the (false) rumor that you could eventually make it to the volcano & mountains in Battle Zone...
And my friends used to think that if you quickly switched the 2600 off & on enough times that, sooner or later, you'd reach the maximum possible score without even playing...
-PongHit
If you switched the 2600 off and on while Space Invaders was in you could enable rapid fire, don't know that it did anything for any other games!
