I know about Evox and saving emulators and roms to the Xbox hard drive to play classic arcade and console games.

What I want to know is, is there any other way to play classic emu on Xbox without having to install modchips or monkey with the hard drive?

You know, kinda like burn the emu and images to cd-r/w, dvd-r/w, and simply play the disc like dreamcast emu.

You have to mod the Xbox. You don't need to monkey with the harddrive.

Then yes, you can pretty much put any emulator you want on a bootable DVDR (or cd/cdrw if you're xbox can read them.. generally they can't). Just make sure the default.xbe is in the root of the DVD and voila.. instant bootable emulation goodness just like on the DC. I won't go over exactly how to do it though.. as there are plenty of tutorials out there.

Oh, I thought you had to go through the process of flashing the bios and installing evox on the harddrive.

well........you still have to flash the chip otherwise your xbox won't do anything. And.....I'm not sure about the hard drive. But, in all honesty......you would be crazy not to monkey with the hard drive.....It's so cheap. $80 for an 80gb hard drive or even a 120 if you look in the right places. and it's pretty difficult to find bootable media for the xbox. Is there any reason that you don't want to put evox on a hard drive?

Part of installing the modchip is flashing a bios onto it.. onto the modchip that is.

You don't have to install evox. Once the modchip is in, your xbox can boot dvdrs. Why you'd want to leave it in this state however.. is another story.

Wow, only DVD-R media?

I thought Xbox supported certain CD-R or CD-RW media too.

I want to do it this way so if my Xbox hard drive ever crashed out I could just buy a new one and transfer the modchip and voila. Plus all the transfering of files to the hard drive baffles and bothers me. @_@

Is there any hit in gameplay or sound performance when using the emulators off of a disc instead of the hard drive "including saving/loading"? That is the only thing that might factor into my not wanting to do it this way.

I like to have things on "disc", it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. :D

No. DVD+R (and of course + and - RW work fine as well ;)

I thought Xbox supported certain CD-R or CD-RW media too. Some do.. the ones with Thompson drives. Others can read CDRW.. but it gets spotty.

Nope. Plays exactly the same.

So put them on disc then :P Lots of people have them on disc, but copy them to the hardrive for convenience. Doesn't really matter a hill o' beans one way or the other.

I don't own a modded box yet, but don't games (including emulators) load more quickly from the hard drive than from DVD media?
