I just tried playing SOCOM online for the first time since installing my router months ago and I'm having problems with my headset. I can't hear or speak to anyone online. I did some searching online and it looks like it has something to do with a Firewall being up. I disabled them on my Mac (I think) but I still can't hear anybody in an online game. Anyone know what's up?

Can you connect directly online instead of going through a router? In other words, if for example you're using a high-speed modem, have you tried connecting the PS2 w/ headset directly through it?

Yeah, thats what I used to do before I had the router but I'd like to avoid it since it's a pain in the ass re-connecting the cables every time I want to play online. I have no problem using Xbox Live thru the new router either, it's just online PS2 games that use the headset. Guess it's a common problem too but I don't know how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Some routers have a problem with SOCOM's UDP audio packets.
Check out this link for more details and port numbers:

This most likely won't have anything to do with your Mac, unless you are using it to share your Internet connection. It's probably the firewall in your router that needs to be configured. I'm not having headset problems with my default router settings on the couple of PS2 games I tried, but I don't have SOCOM and only tried them briefly. I found this information (http://www.us.playstation.com/support.aspx?id=troubleshooting/networkadaptor/415013903.html):
I’m able to play online, but I can’t seem to use the headsets. The headset works fine when I’m playing the offline version of the game. Why can’t I use the headset online?
There are possible reasons why the headsets do not work in the online version of SOCOM:
If the host of the game is behind a firewall, this may prevent you from broadcasting and receiving headset transmissions.
If you have a router, you may have a firewall that is blocking this transmission. Attempt to connect directly from the modem to the Network Adaptor and test to see if this change allows the headsets to broadcast and receive. If this setup works, then the router most likely has a firewall preventing this type of transmission. Contact your router manufacturer and inquire how to open the router’s firewall to the following port range: UDP Ports 6000-6999.

Thanks for the help guys. It looks like I have to find the TCP ports 10070-10080 and UDP port 10070. Guess they both need to be opened all the time but I don't know how to find them on my Mac. All the instructions I could find online are for PC only.
I'm a total dipshit when it comes to stuff like this....anyone have some tips? I found a menu on my Network Settings that have TCP/IP settings, so I guess thats the one I need but have no idea what to do. Do I configure manually and enter the port numbers in there? I don't see anything about a UDP port though.

BTW, what's the maker of your router? I got myself a D-Link router and even though it was supposed to be Mac-compatible, I never succeeded in making it work with OS 9 or X.

I have a D-Link too (DI-604) and it works fine on my Mac with OSX Jaguar. The only problems I've had since installing it were using the PS2 headset online and FTP file transfers (installing the router messed-up my FTP settings and I don't know how to get them back).
I just went to my Sharing preferences, clicked on the "Firewall" tab, and manually entered new ports for TCP (10070-10080) and UDP (10080). Hopefully that'll do the trick. Sound right?

Your best bet is to put the PS2 IP address as the "DMZ" host. This will open all ports to the PS2 and leave your MAC protected.
As I said before, some routers choke on the SOCOM UDP audio packets so you may need a different router, rare, but some of them just don't work right :(
Good luck,
Jerry

@Norkusa: that's reassuring to hear that you DI-604 works fine (despite the loss of ftp access). That's also the model I have, but the stupid manual wouldn't even cover the Mac. Anyways, back to the thread...

Thanks a ton for the help Jerry, but there isn't anything in my Macs preferences that have a DMZ host option. Maybe it's under a different name? I see an field for DNS....isn't that the same thing? Can I enter my PS2's IP address in there?
I think I might need to get a new router. I've been reading up on it and it seems like the D-Link 604 is a real pain in the ass to work with. I doesn't make any sense though...it should work if I open the correct ports up, right? I wish PS2 could have their act together like Xbox Live does. Man, all I had to do was plug the ethernet cable into the Xbox and it practically set itself up. x_x

This is not a function of the MAC, it's in the router configuration and it's supported. Look at page 30 of the D-LINK manual, you can download it at http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=62&pv=16
Your wandering off looking at the MAC when logging into your router via your browser is where you need to be. Just enable DMZ and set it for the IP address of the PS2.

OHHHHH! I didn't realize that you could configure the router thru my web browser. I thought that all that info in the manual was for PC software for the router that couldn't be used on my Mac. Now I feel like a total dipshit.
So now I follow the instructions this time and open my web browser and enter the default IP address of the DI-604. Enter "admin" as the user ID and leave the password blank, hit "ok"....401 Unauthorized.
God damnit, this is really pissing me off. My brother just got his PS2 online after a week of messing with his router settings and whatnot and he really wants to play me in SOCOM. I'll Paypal anyone $10 that can walk me thru this. Seriously. My AIM is RonnieDobbs1234.

Argggg........I'm reading the manual online as I don't have this router. It says no password is required if "admin" is the default user but that sounds like BS to me. Use "admin" as the password as well, I bet that works.
If there is some way to reset it to default settings do that as well. At least your moving in the right direction now :)

No dice. There is a button on the back of the router that you can press so it'll return to it's default settings, but I pressed that and I'm still getting the 401 error (even after using "admin" as the user ID & password).
I guess I'll give D-Link a call tomorrow and see they can help me out at all. I doubt they will though.

What browser are you using? Try using a different one, as it may be having a compatability issue with your router.

I'm using Safari and Explorer browsers. The manual says to use Explorer 4 and up with Java enabled...I'm using 5.2 with Java enabled and it's still not working.
My $10 Paypal offer still stands...

YES! I got the password to work! I reset it again and it worked this time (must have done something wrong before). All I gotta do now is find out what the IP address of my PS2 is. Anyone know how to do that?
For the DMZ it already has 192. 168. 0. X listed. The only number I can change is the "X". So if my Mac has the IP 192. 168. 0. 1 assigned to it, would I jut put 192. 168. 0. 11 in for my PS2?

Yeah, that stupid D-Link manual is so badly made that it took me forever to realize that I needed to use the browser to configure the router (by including only Win XP screen grabs and not indicating that it applies to Mac OS 9 and X as well made me lose a lot of time). First and last time I'm getting a D-Link product for my Mac. Next time, I'll go for Belkin (or another company known for making Mac-friendly products, not just "kinda Mac-compatible" products.
Anyway, I tried again configurating the router last night. Got further than ever before, but it jammed at the WAN autodetection part. My modem lights up a bit during that stage, but the process isn't completed.
I think my router will soon be posted in the Sell and Buy forum...

You should be able to find that in the routers DHCP assignments or you can check the PS2 network config settings for what IP it grabbed.
I know I'm going to get you confused more but you really should set the PS2 to grab the same IP all the time. You can "force" a static IP in the PS2 network settings that's in the range of your routers mask and set that as the DMZ host IP.
It sounds more complicated than it is. Just read the D-Link manual and become familier with the setup screens via the browser.......your almost there!

Arghhh! This thing is killing me! I found my PS2's ISP number but couldn't get the DMZ thing to work, so I called up D-Link tech support today. They told me to set the Trigger & Public Ports for 6869 - 6869 (just 6869 for the Public Port) and set the Types for "both" (TCP & UDP). Still not working.
I really don't want to spend $60 on a new router. If anyone can help me get this working, I'd gladly Paypal you $10 (I feel like I already owe Jerry at least $5 :P )

YES!!!! It works!!! I made another long distance call to D-Link technical support (only had to wait on hold 15 min. this time). Long story short, they gave me some more numbers to plug in and now I'm chatting in SOCOM. Thanks very much for the help everyone (especially Jerry). And if anyone reading this has the same problem I had with SOCOM, feel free to PM me and I'll tell you what to do.

Finally, I was getting worried there for a moment.
BTW: Check page 45 of your SOCOM manual closely ;)

Hey! "Special thanks to...Jerome Jessop". What did you do for SOCOM? Did it have something to do with online support?
Funny. After I made that last post, my voice chat went to shit again. It worked for that one game but I couldn't hear anything again after that. Figures. Anyway, I just downloaded and installed the newest firmware upgrade for the router and it works perfect now. (I downloaded v. 2.2...I was using v.1).
Lady Jaye, if your 604 is still giving you problems, try the firmware upgrade. I bet that'll do the trick.

I had some involvement in the headset hardware itself and other behind the scenes hardware and development tools.
Glad you got it all worked out and can enjoy the headset and voice chat.

@Norkusa: glad you found the solution.
In my case, I already gave up. I put up the router in the Buy and Sell forum and I already have 2 buyers.
