Well, I know it's not my first violent game (I'd been playing Mortal Kombat, Wolfenstein, Doom, etc. long before this) but the first game I remember ever really shocking me was a little point-and-click shareware adventure game for windows, I believe called "Dare to Dream."

I remember my character wandering through a sewer pipe and coming out on the other end to find a whole field filled with dead bodies impaled on pikes. I remember that really freaking me out.

First violent game I owned would more than likely be Code Name: Viper. It was explicit for it's time and I'm surprised a game about a drug cartel fell through the cracks like that, considering NOA would censor out crosses.

i'd have to say games like ganster town or duckhunt, shooting people with a black gun and doing drive-bys, and who hasn't tried to shoot the dog from duckhunt once or twice....

My first "violent" game (depending on how you define it) would be, I believe, Commando on the Atari 2600.

poor pacman being chased by a gang out to kill him so he runs around looking for the PCP/roids mix pills he lost so he could get "powered up" and take on that gang and in turn kill them

Gotta be Mortal Kombat for me just because of the blood factor.

My first violent video game would probably be Karate Champ for the NES. My most ridiculously violent video game was either Carmageddon or Postal. I can't remember which one I played first.

I would have to say that Mortal Kombat was my first violent game...

Or if you count it TMNT in the arcades which I used to play all the time.

Since I'm not sure when it was or what the order is, and the exposure around the same time, the couple potential games are:
Bloodbath (MAC)
Warcraft (PC/MAC)
Doom (PC)
Wolf3D (PC)

I was exposed to Wolf3D around the time of Doom because a friend had a bunch of games bought from his parents. I got Wolf3D shareware on a floppy and did that through a few times, same with Doom. When my Packard Bell went to crap and replaced it with a Micron the guy gave us a bunch of games like Doom 1 & 2, X-wing, Kings Quest 5, and Nascar.

My neighbor got a computer around the same time as me in early 90's, but instead got a MAC. On there he played Warcraft and Bloodbath with a few others I don't recall and weren't violent for that matter. After seeing Warcraft I got into Blizzard games, and with Cyberia and KQ5, Sierra became a big player for me as well.

This all depends on how violence is rated. Certainly, my first Mortal Kombat experiences would be considered violent, but my first Mature game was Resident Evil...that redefined for me how truly violent video games could be. Now, it did come out a couple of years after Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat was violent for its time.
I still prefer 2D Mortal Kombat as opposed to 3D.

I remember my dad being unsure about letting me play Super Smash TV on the Megadrive when I was seven or eight. He did and I thought it was a great game.

Looking at it now, it's just blobs shooting blobs at other blobs. How times have changed. I haven't played that game for years and years.

The first game my parents actually disproved of was GTA when I borrowed it from a friend. They disproved of the concept, but they still let me play it. My parents are great. When I got my PS2 I got GTA3 with it. The shop assistant said "This is rated 18" and my dad said "Oh, well I'll play it then."

Doom or Mortal Kombat, it's a toss-up. I can't remember which one I played first. That's pretty bad, considering I'm 20 years old.

Wolfenstein 3d or maybe Street Fighter

I remember back when I lived with my parents they only ever got a bit 'whut?' over (the 1st PC)GTA & then Kingpin (which GAME wouldn't stock at the time), but they got over it.

The first violent game that I felt was especially true to the definition was Manhunt tbh

I played Wolfenstein on my dad's computer, when I was a middle schooler. I also played Friday the 13th on NES when I was young. I never had a Genesis, but I played Mortal Kombat once or twice at a friends.

As far as post SNES violent games go...

I guess the 1st M-Rated game I remember purchasing was RE:2 for the N64... of course I also had the original Parasite Eve on PS at one point before I got sick of it.

I was never allowed violent games, or games with a rating outside my age category (which, I am a very strong advocate of to ALL parents)
but...
In the early 90's, I remember my dad dropped me off at the games exchange, and would come in to get me in a few minutes. So I took the opportunity to ask the game clerk to let me try Mortal Kombat (which was a huge thing at the time, and I wanted to see what the fuss was about). Needless to say, he came into the store shortly after I started, and stood behind me and said "You're not supposed to play playing that, now ARE you?" We both were very disappointed...

A year or two later though, when I was old enough to, I bought The Tick for Genesis (with my own money, and without permission!). It was rated MA13 (gasp!). My dad came in to watch me play it, and kinda hummed and hawed at it. "Why does this say 'MA'...Mature Audiences? I dont like the idea of that..." and "is all you do in this game punch people? that's a pretty stupid game" and would generally just hang around trying to make me feel bad playing it.

I respect his decisions, and am glad he was proactive in gaming content when I was growing up..he just would go about it rather poorly sometimes ;)

....and I still have that Tick game :D

I was going to say Mortal Kombat but before that I played an extremly violent shooting game. You were basically hunting and shooting these poor little flying animals...with a real gun. Granted, it was plastic, but it was a gun none the less. I know it was on NES but I can't remember the name. I just know that there were flying birds u hunted that looked like ducks. It's was like a duck hunt game, but I can't remember the title. Oh well.

I'd go with Splatterhouse for the TG16. Everything else up to that was less shocking or something.

Well, that's a good question. I've played alot of fighting games, but the first one I considered to be truly violent was either the coin-op version of Mortal Kombat II or Bloodstorm.

Violence is subject to perception. My first beat-em up was Double Dragon. My first bloody game was Mortal Kombat on the Genny. Well, I borrowed it from a friend but it's still the first bloody game I played at home.

Great Idea for a topic, I'm glad it's resurfaced.

I'd have to say the first violent videogame I ever played was Boot Hill (Midway, 1977) in the arcades. This is the first game I can think of having played where the goal was to end the life of your opponent's character. I just thought it was cool because you could shoot away the cactus (yay! destructable environments!)

Prior to playing Boot Hill I don't remember playing anything other than driving or PONG-type videogames. After Boot Hill I think it would be a toss-up between Combat and Air-Sea Battle. Of course, Air-Sea Battle was only "violent" if you played the version with "battle" in the title, otherwise it was merely "Target Fun".

Now if the question, as some have clarified, pertains to gory, bloody violence, I'll need to think about that.... Adventure for the VCS! Seeing that duck/dragon wilt on my terrible sword was pretty gory.

No, I honestly can't remember the first time I saw "blood" in a videogame...maybe on the PC... Ultima Underworld had *some* in it if I recall and so did Ultima VII (genuine, brutal dismemberment), both of which I'd played before I'd seen/played Wolfenstien 3D or Doom. (Also, keep in mind that in 1992/93/94 I hadn't laid a hand on a videogame console since I'd played my Atari maybe back in 1985/86 so I hadn't seen anything in the home and I don't recall having played a gory game in the arcades at that time.)

I guess Techno Cop for the Genesis was my first official violent game (and also the first 16-bit game I ever rented along with Zany Golf). I've played Golgo 13 on the NES before that which was more violent, but Techno Cop was the first game I ever played that had a warning label on it. There was even an article in VG&CE at the time about violent games and Techno Cop was the featured title (this was a couple years before Mortal Kombat I think).

The game sucked though and the only violent part in it was when after you shot someone, they turned into a shapeless red and white pile of goo with arms. Kinda lame.

For me, the first thing that popped into my mind was Outlaw for the Atari 2600 LOL Hey, I was a kid! The idea of two guys standing around shooting each other repeatedly was a pretty violent thought.

... it still kinda is. Atari violence rules.

Next in line, going chronologically (in my experience) was Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers with which I competed against my brother on his SNES. I was always gold (yellow?) Chun-Li. I got pretty good at that game, even beat him a few times as I recall.

Smash TV (arcade). Not exactly realistic violence or anything, but the flying guts (and eyeballs) are somewhat graphic.

I later got Night Trap, and I still don't understand what the big deal was.

Splatterhouse or golden axe i'd say.

I used to bowl when i was really young and there was a half-assed "arcade" in the front foyer of the bowling alley. I used to stare in wonder at the demos running(my parents never gave me money to play)... ah, memories.

Probably Wolfenstein 3d and I also had boxed with it the Spear of Destiny levels. Those are the only Wolfenstein games I like. The others just don't do it for me.
