Okay.. okay..

I may be out of the loop here.

Did anyone ever figure out how to get to those hidden levels in Banjo-Tooie that were previewed and promised at the end of the first game? They had originally said there would be a way to switch the carts or something.

What is the story here?

Short answer: No. They didn't end up programming this into the final games. Some "hints" to it's existence have been found in Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 via hacking, but apparently, hacking through Banjo Tooie has not given any indication that it has any support (even broken, disabled support) for Stop 'n' Swop.

Too bad... it was a very neat idea.

I thought they found a way to get to those levels in Banjo Kazooie.. or at least get to the point where you can get the keys and the ice egg...

However, I'm not sure how it ended up relating to Banjo Tooie. There was definitely no stop and swap though, I do know that.

Well, the Rare Witch Project guys did manage to get the eggs using a Gameshark... but they apparently don't seem to do anything.

They also found codes you can enter in the sandcastle to open the eggs and the ice key (and surprisingly, there were a few other eggs hidden that weren't shown in the ending!). They're on the site somewhere.

From what I understood, "Stop N Swop" was supposed to have you literally stop the game, yank out BK, and plug in BT within a few seconds. The eggs/key would stay in the N64's temporary memory and could have been transferred into the other game. (Interestingly, the Rare Witch guys found a "key" in Donkey Kong 64...early BK betas had a picture of Donkey Kong in Banjo's room so it's quite possible there was supposed to be another hidden SnS between BK and DK64!) The eggs were to be brought to Heggie (the chicken that hatched the one egg, not sure if that was her name or not) and you were given the special egg weapons. Ditto with the ice key and opening that giant chest.

Apparently Nintendo scrapped the idea because of potential system damage and the rest is history.

KristineIrony.

IRONY.

If Nintendo had gone with CD's instead of Carts, Rare COULD have gotten away with it.

Actually no! I don't think you need the Gameshark anymore.. you just stamp in a long ass code in that code entry area. At least that's what I remember reading (and was hugely surprised by.. haven't tried it though).

So how far did this idea get anyways? I didn't read through everything at the RWP site... Does Banjo Kazooie actually insert the data into the N64's memory? Due to Nintendo's concerns, I would guess that it doesn't, and that the idea was scrapped shortly before BK's release... but if that's the case, wouldn't they have altered the ending or something? :?

No, it was altered after Banjo-Kazooie was released, while Banjo-Tooie was being worked on.. Which is sad, because I had looked so forward to playing levels from 1 in 2.

Goes to show how innovative Rare is too.

Goes to show how innovative Rare is too.Yeah, it's too bad Nintendo nixed the idea. Would have been cool. But I can see how it MIGHT damage something.

Maybe there'll be a Banjo-Three and Four which can do the same thing. On Xbox of course.

Wow, those are some awfully long cheat codes! X_x

It would have been cooler if there were some way to get them without cheating at all... but at least this isn't using a Gameshark. Is there any way to find these codes from the game itself?

Nope. My guess is that you were supposed to get the codes in Tooie, but not anymore. :(
