View Full Version : Did I do a bad thing?

I was trying to appease my wife who constantly gives me the business about my game collection taking up a lot of space. So, I started selling some of it. My boxed systems take up the most room, so I picked out a couple of Telstar video tennis systems and my Atari Jaguar (with Cybermorph & Zool 2). These were the only systems I own that I hadn't played in over 2 years. We were broke too, so the Ebay money came in handy.

Now comes the seller's remorse -- not about the Telstar stuff, because that never sold. The Jaguar did. I always meant to seriously collect for it and never did. It just never took hold. So I figured I could part with it. Even though I only had two (lackluster) titles and hadn't played the thing for two years, now I miss my Jaguar and I want it back. I'm never selling a system again.

Considering the facts of this story, would you have parted with your Jaguar?

Do you have any good seller's remorse stories?

P.S. I couldn't decide if this belonged in the Buying & Selling category. Move if you see fit.

No don't be sorry. You needed the money. made the wife happy. Plus the jag is easy to replace.

Only 2 cases of remorse with my collection right now...

1.) Selling a lot of my ColecoVision stuff back in '89 when I was in high school to get some money for a date. I sold off a bunch of rare carts (of course, no one considered them rare at the time) - Star Wars: Arcade, Gyruss, and about 6 others, -sold the darn games for $5 apiece. I'm only thankful that my friend had no interest in Mr Do's Castle!

2.) When I moved a few years back, I tossed all my Genesis & SNES boxes and just took the carts with me to save space - really regret that now.

As for the question, if I needed the money badly, I probably would have sold the Jaguar too - if it was something rarer, it would have killed me. At least since your Jaguar collection wasn't that big, once better times come along, you can pick up right where you left off fairly easily.

I threw out a sms in the box, when I moved for college, yes i threw out the entire system, only had on game, but the thing was never played, im talkin mint condition. It was givin to me brand new, but i was to into my snes, so i didnt bother with it. Now that i am a collector i kick myself on a daily basis for it.

Absolutely. You haven't played the thing in TWO YEARS!... and you NEEDED MONEY!... and your WIFE IS HAPPY!... and DID YOU MAKE ANY OTHER GOOD POINTS?

You kind of sound like me, actually... in the regret sense.

I always buy a lot of different stuff, play it for a while, want something new, and sell it off for that. Then a week later I'm saying to myself, "Man, I wish I still had that." I'll figure out some master plan to get another without really spending any cash, and by that time, the realization of why I sold it in the first place is coming back and then I'm glad I dumped it.

It happens. I'm sure you regret it.. but like you said, you needed the money and it helped.

Best luck to you in the future...

A while ago when Saturns were being clearanced I traded in about 75 NES games (most not rare, some mildly rare). I used the cash to clean up on the Saturn clearance. All in all I got more worth in Saturn stuff than what I traded, but I'll now often tell someone I have a game and 5 minutes later say, "oh wait, I got rid of that." I don't feel remorse because I got SOOOO much more value in the things I purchased (who wouldn't trade Mario 1 and 10 Yard Fight for a copy of Guardian Heros?!). But when ever I shop for NES games and pick up something I hate having to remember if I have it or HAD it. Consequently, I've got into databasing my collection to fix that problem.

I sold my Jaguar to somebody on these boards. Can't remember who though.

Personally I couldn't stand the system and will never own one again.

I sell systems from my collection often if they're not part of the "untouchables" I collect for, even if I enjoy the system. I base it on ease or re-get-ability. Like my NES stuff... no rare games, I can get a NES and stuff back easy. Colecovision? equally easy, 2600...

You see where I'm going, a Jaguar while not usually a 'in the wild' commonality, is easily replaced, especially with two common games. If you saved space and you have needed cash for the moment, you did a good thing.

Unfortunately that isn't the case in Australia. Jaguar's are impossible to find (PAL or NTSC) and selling one mean you're pretty much saying goodbye forever unless you want to spend big bucks getting another one later.

If I had to absolutely sell something, I would've gone with something a little easier to get (but still rare enough to fetch a high price: e.g. a 3DO). 3DO's here, whilst are hard to get, do come up on eBay on a occassion.

So, in answer to the question: YES, I would've sold something in that situation. But, NO - it wouldn't have been the Jaguar.
