I just recently got a package in the mail with 7 sealed game gear games from eBay (Aladdin, Caesars Palace, Lion King, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos, Sports Trivia & Super Battletank), 21.00 shipped.

Anyways, after a little inspection, and finally breaking down and opening one, I realized something is wrong here. All the games seem to be distributed by Majesco Sales. Most also have the original release date and a year 2000 release date. The cardboard boxes look like garbage, sorta like a 3 times recycled corrogated cardboard box. The printing on the box and the cart is fuzzy and off centered in areas like those pirated CD's you get from flea markets. The Manual is B&W and looks like it was printed on plain white copy paper, the font even skips sizes here and there, ugh. The carts also don't have the plastic cases that came with them either.

My question is.....what the hell is this?

Welcome to the magical world of Majesco, a company that made a deal with Sega to reproduce and sell their long dead systems to a budget market.

Packaging, print and plastic quality of the items are sub-par and all made in Mexico (although I've found some of their PCBs and chip assemblies to be cleaner and better soldered than legit Sega stuff back when the Genesis was big.)

Genesis 3? A Majesco exclusive. SNES carts with the warnings molded into the plastic instead of those grey stickers? Game Gears that won't work with the TV tuners and often factory fresh with scratched screens? GENESIS CARTRIDGES MADE OF A PLASTIC A SHADE LIGHTER THAN ACTUAL BLACK?

I heard they were going to make a budget style Saturn and then the Dreamcast but nothing came of it. They are now easy sleazy GBA publishers which is a slight step up on the video game foodchain from their humble origins.

I did open the one Game Gear cart up and noticed that the chip set and soldering was very well done.

I'm still fairly new to the whole majesco deal, all I know of them is they make cheap ass games. haha, I knew they made the Genesis 3 also. But the Game Gear deal is new to me.

Anyways, now, are these even worth having in my collection? I mean, I can't help getting that overwhelming urge when I sit these on my shelf that there a disgrace to everything else here, that there not worth jack shit! Am I just an over picky collector or what?

I personally don't collect any re-releases (greatest hits etc.) I do however like the Zelda/link, and metroid yellow on the nes. The only majesco Items I collect are titles which are exclusivly released by them such as the genesis 3, and frogger releases.

Cmos, would you mind telling me the name of the seller of that auction? I am thinking of bidding on a very similar auction by mjlf95. Thanks!

That same lot is all over E-bay. You can't browse E-bay without running into 50 lots of them in various forms (5 games, 2 games, etc.), all the Majesco releases. It's about as bad as the NGPC color games that are all over the place that no one ever buys anymore.

This has brought up a question I've had for a while. The NGPC game packs that are being sold at (I think it's) EB have different labels than the standard/original carts. I know they're new, but they have none of the original packaging. Did Majesco or someone like them snag the rights?

Let us not forget that Majesco is not relegated solely to the GBA these days. They also put out the above average Bloodrayne (multi), Maximum Chase (xbox) and the excellent Bomberman Generations (GCN). I'd say they semi-redeemed themselves. Although we all have to stop and think...how awesome would a DC re-release be? Hell...it might surpass the Gamecube!

Yeah, they seem to have acquired a quality control department as of late with games like Bomberman Generation. I have one game for Game Gear released by Majesco, Deep Duck Trouble Starring Donald Duck. It's a good game too, however they only rereleased it. I know that they released Castlevania: Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps for Genesis in the cheap paper boxes with black and white instruction manuals too.
