View Full Version : What makes a Turbo-Grafx game complete?

Ok, I'm curious about this, and after a lot of searching, can't seem to find the answer.

I know that the US HuCards at least come with:

Special "jewel" case
Manual/Insert
HuCard
Plastic protective sleeve for the HuCard

Anything else?

Do they come with a cardboard sleeve for the "jewel" case?

If so, which ones? The Super CD games? The HuCards?

Any info would be appreciated, as I need to know how painful collecting for the system can be. :)

Thanks,
Steve

From what I've found....

All US HU-Card games came with an outer cardboard box, and most Hu-Cards came in a specific Jewel Case, though some later games din't have that, but rather a cheap plastic tray inside the cardboard box with the Hu-Card and instructions....those that didn't have jewls include Magical Chase, Air Zonk, Falcon, Solider Blade, Ghost manor, and some others, don't have a full list yet...

US CD games as far as I can find also came in jewl cases with outer cardboard boxes...could be some weird exceptions...WD Games such as Vasteel(don't know if this is CD or Super CD.)

US Super CD games I believe none came in outer card board boxes(I could be wrong, not for certain) Both WD games Vasteel and Exile : Wicked Phenomenon came with a cd case sleeve I guess you would call it, but was commonly discarded as it wasn't attachable to the CD case itself(hope that makes sense)

I dont think that Darkwing Duck originally game with a plastic jewel case. I believe it was in a cardboard box with a pastic tray, but i cant be sure because all i have of it is the game, sleve, and instructions. I made my own jewel case for it by cutting out the round things where the cd sticks and scanning a spine label and editiing it to say Darkwing Duck. Can anyone else confirm that this game did in fact never come with a jewel case?

Vasteel, IMO, may be the ONLY TurboGrafx CD that doesn't come with cardboard boxes due to the usage of double CD case, obviously all SCD games are jewel cases only.

If you're really anal, to make a hucard games complete, those earlier releases with jewel cases also come with a styrofoam piece to fill the space in the cardboard boxes, if anyone has noticed it.

Other Hucards that come in the plastic tray rather than the jewel case include:

Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure
Neutopia II
New Adventure Island
Bomberman '93
Chase H.Q.
Time Cruise
Shockman
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
Dungeons & Dragons: Order of the Griffon
Legend of Hero Tonma
Samurai-Ghost
Dead Moon
Somer Assault
World Sports Competition
Hit the Ice

in addition to the aformentioned

Darkwing Duck
Falcon
Air Zonk
Ghost Manor
Soldier Blade
Magical Chase

I believe that's all of them.

The 4-in-1 Super CD-Rom that came with the Turbo Duo did not come in a jewel case. Just the CD and 3 instruction manuals for Bonk's Adventure,
Bonk's Revenge and Gates of Thunder.

FYI, PC-Engine games did not come in cardboard boxes. They came shrinkwrapped in their jewel cases, like Dreamcast games.

PS - Anyone have any extra plastic trays? I am looking for 3 for my Samurai Ghost, New Adventure Island and Legend of Hero Tonma. I wish someone would make these, like they did with the hucard sleeves.

Its complete when its in your hands and your about to spend a night
playing it to death...

nah ... some have cardboard boxes as well.

Ive ordered games directly from TTI and received stuff like t-shirts and footballs and stuff.. one time they sent me some video tapes with my
games of new releases.
dont know if that was a part of the game but still... it was nice to
be down with TTI when they first came out with the NEC Turbografx 16

(cough cough bullshit)

Some of the carts that came out for the PCEngine served more than a gaming purpose..

Some were used for dating services and some for utillities.
and they came in cardboard boxes.

No need to be insulting. I've never seen any PC-Engine games come in cardboard boxes. Can you point me to a website that might show these titles. I am just curious to see which ones they are. Every new PC-Engine game I have ever ordered came in shrinkwrap.

Esquire, are you sure your list is complete and accurate? If so, it's fantastic, as it would save me a LOT of time trying to hunt down specific jewel cases. I didn't realize some games were sold without a jewel case.

On a related note, I tried to do the same thing for NES games... determining which ones came with maps and such. That was motivated by a listing on eBay which claimed Final Fantasy was complete because it had the box and manual. As we all know, there were two maps with that game.

Not to sway off the topic that I started...

But Jeff, there is definitely a list of items that make an NES game complete.

That does not include all of the irrelevant inserts, but does include things like : maps, plastic toys, 3D glasses, etc.

I used it to complete my master listing, so I know what I need to get for each title.

Hope this helps.

Now, back to my topic.

Ok. So, for general purposes, here are the rules:

US HuCards come with a cardboard sleeve, jewel case, manual, protective sleeve, HuCard, and styrofoam insert for the cardboard sleeve.

However, these specific US HuCard releases have a plastic tray, rather than a jewel case, that was packaged within the cardboard sleeve:

Air Zonk
Bomberman '93
Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure
Chase H.Q.
Darkwing Duck
Dead Moon
Dungeons & Dragons: Order of the Griffon
Falcon
Ghost Manor
Hit the Ice
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
Legend of Hero Tonma
Magical Chase
Neutopia II
New Adventure Island
Samurai-Ghost
Shockman
Soldier Blade
Somer Assault
Time Cruise
World Sports Competition

US TurboGrafx CD games came with a cardboard sleeve, jewel case, manual, CD, and styrofoam insert for the cardboard sleeve.

Vasteel is an exception to this, as it had a double CD case.

US Super CD games came with jewel case, manual, and CD.

The exception to this is the 4-in-1 Super CD-Rom that came with the Turbo Duo. It came with just the CD and 3 instruction manuals for Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge and Gates of Thunder.

As I'm new to the TurboGrafx phenomenon, it's always nice to have an idea of what I should be looking out for.

While this may not be a complete list, it seems as though the general concensus is that the list is accurate.

Unless anyone has any objections or updates, I have a greater understanding of what's what.

One last question: Did Keith Courage come with a cardboard sleeve?

I know that it was a pack-in with the system at one time, and I thought I read something that the pack-in did NOT come with a cardboard sleeve.

However, I imagine that if you could buy it separately, it would have come with that cardboard sleeve.

Anyone?

Also, bickering aside, I appreciate everyone's input on this topic. It's sometimes hard to get this information.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes. I own all the games above except for Magical Chase, Bonk 3, Soldier Blade and Bomberman '93, and the one's I have all come in a plastic tray. The ones I don't have I have seen on ebay with the tray. So if see you some seller trying to sell one of these games as complete and its in a jewel case, you know he's lying. Take for instance these auctions.

See, this is EXACTLY why this kind of information is important.

If you didn't tell me, I would not have known, and would have made an incorrect assumption.

HA-HA! The power of information! LOL

Anyone have a list of the "to be complete" items for the TG-16, like the one for the NES?

Alright, guys! I have a project going which will be done on my end fairly soon, probably a few days. I know most of the info, I just have to sit down and compile the rest of it. It's called the TurboGrafx-16 Collectors' List. It will go include the details of what these games all came with... Case, Box, New or Old Style Sleeve, Maps, White CD case or not, Double Case, etc. All of that stuff. I'm just unsure on some manual and game variations, and stuff like that. Nonetheless, check for it fairly soon in the Collecting Forum.

A box, cardboard sleeve, whathaveyou doesn't exist for Keith Courage... at least to my knowledge.

Hit The Ice has a case. It may have been released without a case later, this is one of the things that I'm unsure about.

3X3 Eyes came in a cardboard box, along with a VHS tape. There was a Koei strategy game LE verison that did as well, and a few others. No standard release PCE games besides 3X3 Eyes did...to my knowledge.

All 6 of the Supergrafx games came in cardboard sleeves though.

Are you sure you aren't confusing that with the PC-Engine version? The reason I ask is that PC-Engine version, which of course came in a jewel, looks very much like a Turbo chip. There is no Japanese language on it and the name is in english on the cover.

FYI, if you need any help for your project, check out this site:

VHS tapes? What the heck was on them?

The coolest accesories I've had with my games have been the extra stuff included with the Lunar games and the letter for Star Tropics. I thought it was ingerious later on when I realised I needed to dunk the letter in water. My parents asked what the heck I was doing. LOL

Sorry mate but i think you've been had, i have spare cases, blanks basically, that i bought a while ago, and floating around on the net is a template for creating the spine stickers for the cases.. So id say its a remake.. i have a couple of new sealed Hit the ice's and non sealed ones, and ive never seen a case for it.. I guess its possible, what with TZD and TTI doing some wierd things with games tht a case may have came out, but id doubt it..

I'm personally having trouble tracking down a few more boxes, Turrican, Jackie Chan and Samurai Ghost ( im only missing those 3 boxes ) being the hardest ( aside from Magical Chase that is )..

LOL No, I'm glad I can say that I didn't get had... I'm just a retard who doesn't get enough sleep and sees thing sometimes. LOL I did some detective work, and it wasn't even Hit The Ice I was looking at. I don't even now what the hell game it was. (we'll just leave the explanation at that) I thought this was really weird because I'd never seen a case before, and judging by the release date, and what titles releases around the same time... a case doesn't make sense.

Anyway... check this out:
